Description

E. A. LOCKWOOD ADJUSTABLELID FOR FANS, ETC
Filed Feb. 20, 1924 INV EN TOR.
A TTORNEYS.
Patented Jan. 27, 1925.
UNITED STATES ELMER A. LOGKWOOD, OF STERLING, ILLINOIS.
ADJUSTABLE LID FOR FANS, ETC.
Application filed February 20, 1924.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER A. Loonwoon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sterling, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Lids for Pans, Etc, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in lids for pots, pans, kettles, stove openings, etc., the primary object of the invention residing in the provision of such a lid whereby the diameter of the same may be readily increased or decreased at will, for allowing the same to be employed in conjunction with pots, pans and kettles of varying sizes as well as the closing of stove open ings of various sizes.
An additional object of my invention resides in the provision of a lid of the above character, wherein the same may be manufactured and marketed at relatively small cost, and wherein the lid may be adjusted in an easy and expeditious manner.
With the foregoing and other objects in view as the nature of the invention will be better understood, the same comprises the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of an adjustable lid constructed in accordance with the present invention,
' Figure 2 is a fragmentary detailed cross section thereof taken on the line 22 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is an enlarged perspective of one of the sliding plate members that comprise an essential part of the present invention.
Now having particular reference to the drawing, 5 indicates a circular-shaped sheet metal plate that is equipped at its central point with a knob or handle 6.
This plate 5 is formed upon its bottom side with a plurality of radially extending ribs 7 that terminate at their inner ends ad- Serial No. 694,088.
jacent the central axis of the plate and at their outer ends at the edge of said plate 5. These ribs are of dove-tail shape and are preferably formed by a pressing operation.
Arranged concentrically upon the underside of this plate 5 is a plurality of sheet metal fan-shaped plates 8 that are formed with dove-tail shaped grooves or channels 9 for the reception of the dove-tail shaped ribs 7 formed upon the under-side of said first mentioned plate 5. These grooves or channels 9 are of a length equivalent to the length of the ribs 7 of the plate 5 and terminate at their outer ends inwardly of the outer edges of the plate, and at their inner ends at the inner edges of said plate.
It will be obvious that when these plates are arranged upon the under-side of the circular plate 5, the same will form an auxiliary adjustable plate for allowing the lid thus formed to be increased or decreased in diameter as the occasion demands.
As clearly shown in the dotted lines of Figure 1, the opposite edges of said fanshaped plates 8 overlap each other for allowing the outward sliding movement of the plates with respect to the stationary plate 5, and this without the separation of said plates 8.
From the foregoing it will at once be apparent that I have provided a highly novel form of adjustable lid that is particularly adapted to be employed in conjunction with pots, pans, and the like, and in some instances, the same may be employed as a lid for stoves.
Numerous advantages of an invention of this character will be appreciated by those skilled in the art, and even though I have herein shown and described the most practical embodiment of the invention with which I am at this time familiar, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a lid of the character described, a circular stationary plate member, a plurality of concentrically arranged fan-shaped plate members disposed for sliding movement upon the under-side of said stationary plate, means for slidably interconnecting B said fan-shaped lates with said circular shaped fplate, sai means comprising dovetail shaped ribs formed upon the under-side of said stationary plate for engagement Within dove-tail shaped grooves or channels upon said fan-shaped plate members. 10
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ELMER A. LOCKWOOD.
