To all whom it may 0001 061% Be it known that I, ADoLPI-I H. LIGHTER, residing at Toledo, county of Lucas, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seat Panels, of which I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to seat panels and has, for itsobject to provide a seat panel unit of improved construction, particularly with respect to the manner of securing the covering of the panel to the frame of the unit.

Another object of the invention is to provide an improved panel covering having a fiapfor extensible portion at one side thereof which is adapted to overlie the back of the frame of the panel and to be secured thereto.

Another object of the invention is to provide an improved seat panel structure embodying a frame carrying padding material, with a covering for the same having one or more flaps or extended portions arranged to extend over the back of the frame and adapted for quick and ready attachment thereto.

Another object of the invention is to provide a unitary upholstered seat panel including a covering, certain edges of the panel, when the seat is completed being concealed, the exposed edge portion of the panel having a finishing strip or head, with which is either separately or integrally connected a flap or extensible portion arranged to overlie the back of the panel and to be connected therewith, so as to bind and maintain the covering upon the panel.

Still another object of the invention is to provide an improved panel covering having corner pockets for receiving certain corners of the panel frame, whereby the covering is held upon the frame and also to provide the covering with a flap secured along one of its edges and arranged to extend over and to be connected with the back of the frame.

Another object of the invention is to provide a unitary upholstered panel, including a covering and frame having a border wire, the covering having secured upon one of its edges a flap arranged to extend over the back of the frame with its extremity encircling the border wire and secured thereto by means of a detachable spring clip.

With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises certain novel forms of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described. and claimed, it being understood that the construction shown is susceptible to various modifications without departing from the spirit of the invention as expressed in the claims.

A structure constituting one embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

Figure I is a plan view of the body of a vehicle showing the application of the improved panels to the sides of the front and rear seats of the vehicle.

In the construction of the upholstered seat panels for automobiles and other vehicles, and particularly the side or end panels of the seat, three of the edges are usually concealed, the bottom and back edges by the ends of the seat and seat back panels respectively and the top edge, by being extended under an inturned flange of the vehicle body, thus leaving the front edge of the panel exposed and thereby making it necessary to construct the same so as to give it a finished appearance. However, this construction may be varied from time to time and it is to be understood that the present invention is not limited to a panel having only one of its edges provided with a finished appearance, but comprehends broadly a panel, the covering of which carries one or more extensions adapted for quick and ready attachment to the frame of the panel and which may be combined with the edge of the covering to form a bead, if so desired, whereby such edge or edges will afford a finished appear ance.

In carrying out this idea, I provide a panel frame which may comprise a border wire 10 with which is connected the interwoven wires 11 as shown in Figure II of the drawings, or it may comprise a border wire 12 the sides of which are connected by the strips 13 as shown in Figure V. Superimposed upon the frame is a flexible board 14, such as cardboard or the like and upon the top of the board is disposed a layer of any suitable padding material as indicated at 15. The covering 16 of the panel is preferably provided along certain of its edges with a beaded portion 17 'whichmay be formed by sewing a V strip to the edge of the covering, as indicated in Figure I, or by folding the edge inwardly and securing it by stitching, if desired. The beaded edges 17 of the covering are preferably secured to the border wire of the frame by means of the spring clipspl8,

which are easily attached or removed and which firmly grip the beaded portion of the covering to secure it upon the border wire of the frame. At one or more of the corners of the frame, pockets 19 are provided upon the covering, into which project the corner portions of the frame as shown in Figures'II and-V. The pockets serve to prevent displacement of the covering upon the frame and are formed by cutting the material in the shape indicated by dotted lines in Figures Hand V, to provide the flared portions 20, which are folded inwardly and stitched along the line 21 and which are also tied by the beaded strip 17 encircling and'sewed to the inner edges of said flared portions. The beaded edge 22 at the'front of the covering has connected therewith the base portion of the triangular shaped flapv 23, as by stitching or otherwise, the flap being extended across the back of the frame with its extremity encircling the border wire, as indicated in Figure IV, the flap being secured preferably by means of the metallic spring clip 2 although it may be secured otherwise as by stitching. By this construction the entire .front edge of the covering, or any of-the other edges thereof, may be firmly secured and bound upon the frame by means of a single clip or other holding member and at I the same time the edge of the covering at the base of the flap will have a finished appearance and be free from any visible attaching or securing means. The side panels 25 of the front seat of the vehicle are preferablyprovided with a smooth covering while the panels 26 for the rear seat may be pleated as indicated in Figure I.

While I have shown only one flap or extended attaching portion on the covering in ,dicated in the drawings, it will be understood that several ofthese triangular flaps may be extended from one or more of the sides of the covering transversely or longitudinally across the back of the frame (de pending upon the length of the same) and securedto the sides thereof and it will be further understood that the shape of the flaps or extensions may be other than of triangular construction.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. An upholstery unit comprising a frame, padding material disposed upon the front side of the frame and a covering for the padding material having a flap secured approximately along one entire edge thereof and extended across the back of the frame and connected to the opposite side thereof.

2. An upholstery unit comprising a frame, padding material disposed u on the front of the frame, a covering for tie padding material and a triangular fiap overlying the back of the frame having its base portion connected to the covering at one ed e of the frame and its apex secured to the rame at an opposite edge thereof.

3. An upholstery unit comprising a frame, a covering for the frame having corner pockets'adapted to receive the corresponding corners of the frame whereby the cover is held against displacement, filling material disposed between the covering and frame, and a flap secured along one edge of the cover and connected to the frame at its opposite side.

4. An upholstery unit comprising a frame,

a covering for the frame having corner pockets adapted to receive the corresponding corners of the frame and a triangular flap extending over the back of the frame having its base secured to the covering at one edge of said frame and havin its apex secured to the opposite edge of said frame.

An upholstery unit comprising a frame, a covering for the frame, corner pockets forming a. part of said cover and adapted to receive the corresponding corners of the frame, a triangular flap secured along one side of the cover and extending across the back of the frame, means for securing the extended portion of the flap to the frame, and means for securing the cover to the frame independent of the flap.

6. An upholstery unit comprising a frame, padding material disposed upon the frame, a covering for the padding material having one side secured to one edge portion of the frame and the opposite side provided with a triangular extension overlyingthe back of the frame and extending to and secured upon said first frame edge portion.

7. An upholstery unit comprising a frame, padding material disposed upon. the frame, a

.covering for the padding material having certain of its edge portions secured to the sides of the frame and another edge portion provided with a triangular extension overlying the back of the frame and having its extremity disposed beneath one of said scoured edge portions. 7

8. An upholstery unit comprising a frame,

padding material disposed upon the frame, a covering upon the padding material having certain of its edges connected with the sides of the frame and having a beaded edge along another side of the frame, a triangular flap upon the back of the frame having its base portion connected with and forming a part of said beaded edge and its extremity disposed upon the opposite side of the frame and means securing said flap to the frame.

9. An upholstery unit comprising a frame, padding material disposed upon said frame, and a covering for the frame and padding material, said covering being secured at one edge to the adjacent edge of the frame and having a tapering flap at its opposite edge which overlaps the back of the frame and is secured thereto at the first mentioned edge.

10. An upholstery unit comprising a frame padding material disposed upon the frame and a covering for the frame having certain of its edges terminating upon and secured to the edges of the frame and having a continuously narrowing portion extending across the back of the frame with its extremity secured to the frame adjacent one of said edges.
