Be it known that l, WILLIAM Eroi-Enorm, a citizen of the United States, residing in the village ot e/icero7 county oi Cook, and State of illinois7 have invented certain new and useful improvements in Heating Systems, of which the following is a specification,
rThis invention relates te heating systems and particularly to apparatus capable ot use in systems et the low pressure vapor type.
The objects of the invention are to provider in a sjf'stein of the character referred to, means for eiectively returning the water ot' condensation to the boiler and particularly relates to novel features of the return .tank wherein all the working parts are enclosed thereim thereby eliminating outside moving parts, and effectively reducing wear and preventing tampering with mechanisms, comprising a neat. valv inechanisi'ns, and pivotally mounted weights for operating the valve mechanisms and connections between the pivotally operated Peat and the valve mechanisms; to provide a, consffuction wherein all of the operating parts are mounted upon a removable cover plate thereby rendering easy access to the several parts 'for inspection or repairs and in general to provide an economical construction with few moving parts and whereiu positive and accurate action is assured.

through which the drip `from the steam supply main is returned to the pipe 10 and a check valve 13. Boiler pressure of steam holds the check valve closed ungtil valve actuated mechanisms which will be presentdescribed overc mes the same. Referring to the return tank., it is mounted on the upright pipe G and is situated between the heatingsystem and the boiler and is connected up with the pipe 4 which is returning the water of condensation to the boiler. llfithin the return tank is pivotally mounted a lioatl. T his float is above the connection ot the pipe and is supported on the rod 15 and casting 16 which casting is loosely mounted on the pivot pin 17, said pivot pin being secured in a strap 18 to a cover 19.
The casting 16 extends upwardly in a V- ape, the arms 2O and 21 of which are deed to engage a lug 22 on a weighted cross shaped member 23 loosely mounted on the pivot pin 17 and provided with lugs 2% and 25 adapted to engage the stem 26 of secaidL weighted member loosely pivoted beve the pivot pin 17 at 27 and having an adapted to engage adjusting. nuts Sand 3G on a rod 31. The upper end of t rod is piifoted at 32 to a bar 33 pivoted to bracket which bracket is bolted or erwise secured to the cover 19.

The vent pipe lat which is connected to the condenser pipe 'furnishes an outlet for the air in the system when theV valve 317 is opened. A special check Valve is placed in the vent` pipe. This check valve is very sensitive allowing the air to pass from the system but closing when it tends to flow into system as it does when the system` is cooling` it the opposite end of bar 33 is-pivotally secured at 39v theI stem 40 of avalve 41, the
seat ot which is connected to a steam pipe 'st-2, which steam pipe is connected with the main steam supply pipe 2 and is provided with a valve 43.
In operatic-ii it wilt be noticed that the water ot condensation rises in the supply tank or discharged thcretrom, the float will cause the V-shapefl casting to engage the lug on the cross-shaped weighted member 23 and as it advaiucs, the weighted member will be carried to a point l eyond the center ot gravity at which point the weighted member will be lree to fall. and-cause either the. lug 24 or 25 to strike the stem of the weighted member 26. giving it a hammerlike blow which will, through arm 28 adjusting nuts 30 or 29, operate the rod 3l and cause a quick release ot and closure ot' either `the steam valve or vent valve as the case may be.
The water oi condensation having caused the reversal oi" the valves 37 and 41 as shown in Fig. 2, the admission ot steam plus the water pressure in the supply tank will overcome the check valve 13 and allow the water of condensation to pass the check valve and enter the boiler.
Vhen the water ot condensation has passed from the return tank o the boiler thel float 14- will again resume its position shown in F 2, and the steam valve al, will close while the valve 37 to the vent pipe will. open, thereby allowing any steam vapor that might remain in the return tank to be condensed in condenser pipe 38 and l'low hack into thei'eturn tank and also allowing the air trom the system and tank to escape through vent pipe all and check valve a5.
I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details ot construction as shown in the drawings.
I claim as my invention:
l. In a heating system, the combination with a return tank, oi a pipe for returning the water of condensation to said tank, a check valve tor said pipe, a pipe connecting the return water pipe to the boiler, a check valve in the said boiler pipe connection, a pipe connecting the return tank to the main steamsupply pipe, a valve in said pipe, a vent pipe connected to the return tank with a condenser pipe interposed therein, and arranged to return water ot condensation, a valve iii the condenser pipe, a pimted float in the return tank and actuating means whereby the iioat causes simultaneously a reversal ot the valves in the steam pipe and vent pipe.V

in a heating system of the character described the combination with a return tank having a pivoted float therein, ot upstanding weighted members one of said members pivoted at the float pivot, and the pivot of the other odset therefrom, connections between the float and one of said weighted members, vent and steam valves connected with the other weighted members and operable connections between the float and the separately pivoted members whereby the inlet and outflow of the water condensate is regulated.
4. In a heating system of the character described, the combination with a return tank having an' actuating mechanism comprising upstanding weighted members separately pivoted in offset relation, vent and steam valves connected to one of said weighted members, a pivoted tioat connected to the other weighted member, connections between the members whereby the actuating ot one of said members serves to actuate the other member and its attendant mechanism.
In an apparatus ot the character described, the combination with a return tank havingV automatically synchronized steam and vent valves, of a stand-pipe connected to said tank, a pivoted oat mounted in said tank, an upstanding weighted arm connected to the iioat, and a separate arm pivotally mounted in ofset relation, actuating mechanism functioning steam and vent valves connected to the oiset arm whereby the 'functioning of one arm serves to actuatc the other arm and its attendant mechanism.
6. In a heating system of the character described, the combination with a return tank having a pivoted float therein, of an upstanding weighted member rotatably mounted on tlieloat pivot and a similar member pivoted in an offset position, a inember rigidly fixed to the fioat member and functioning to limit the travel of one of said weighted members, steam and vent valves functioning with the rotative movement ot the offset pivot member and operable condescribed, the combination With a return tank having a float therein, of a pipe through which Water of condensation is admitted thereto, a cheek Valve to prevent back pressure of the Water of Condensation, a pipe connecting the Water of condensation pipe to the boiler, a eheelf; valve in said pipe, said Check valve being normally held closed by boiler steam pressure, a pipe connecting l the return tank to the main steam supply pipe, a valve in said pipe, a Vent pipe connected to the return tank with a condenser pipe interposed therein, and arranged to return Water of condensation, and a Valve in the condenser' pipe and automatically actuated mechanisms whereby the loat causes the mechanisms to simultaneously reverse the valves in the vent pipe and steam pipe.
