Patented Jan. 6, 1925,
UNITED STATES JOHN JACKOWITZ, O'F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SANDPAPERING AND RUBBING- HAND BLOCK.
Application led December 20, 1923.
.To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN JAcKowrrZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State ot New York, have invented a new and Improved Sandpapering and Rubbing Hand Block, of which the following is a ttull, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to hand-blocks for supporting abrasive material used either in smoothing a surface or polishing the same and has for an object to provide an improved construction whereby sandpaper or other material may be readily applied and removed and when applied, held iirmly in place during the operation ot the block.
Another object is to provide a block formed with thumb or linger operating means for quickly and easily grasping and releasing the supply of sandpaper, emery paper or other material used in polishing or 'rubbing a surface.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a block, disclosing` an embodiment ot' the invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view through Figure 1, approximately on line 2--2.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view through Figure 1, approximately on line 3 3.
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view ghrugh Figure 2, approximately on line Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 and 2 indicate the two sections of the block which may be held together in any desired manner, as tor instance, by the screws 3. rlhe section 2 is adapted to receive one or more articles 4, which articles may be sandpaper, emery paper, a polishing or rubbing cloth or any desired material to be rubbed against a surface as the block is operated.
In the present construction, means are provided to accomplish the same result in a much better way, namely, to hold the sandpaper or other material in place in a proper stretched condition and in such a manner as to be quickly removed and re-applied serial No. 681,818.
whenever desired. As indicated in the drawing, there is provided a clamping structure 5 at each end for engaging the turned up ends of the sandpaper or other material 4. Each oit these clamping members is provided with a guiding rod 6 extending toward the center of the block in a suitable groove 7 and also provided with a second guiding rod having a turned up end 10 presenting a journal pin projecting into the disk 11. The disk 11 is provided with an arm or lever 12 on which a thumb member 13 is pivotally mounted. By pressing the thumb member 13, the respective guiding rods 8 are pulled and the clamping members 5 caused to grip the ends of the sandpaper for holding the same iirmly in place while the block is moved across the surface to be treated.
I/Vhen it is desired to remove one oit the strips of sandpaper or all of the sandpaper or other members, the clamping members are released by taking the thumb or finger ofi' of the thumb member 13 and the sandpaper 4 may be easily removed and another substituted. The block 1 is provided with a central recess or cut-out portion 14 for receiving the disk 11, said block being also notched at 15 for accommodating the handle 12. A journal pin 16 extends a short distance into both of the sections 1 and 2 as shown in Figure 3 and also through the disk 11.
What I claim is A hand-block for applying sandpaper and the like, comprising a body capable ot being grasped in the hand, said body being di vided into upper and lower parts rigidi)v but removably secured together, the lower part on its upper surface being formed with a pair of spaced parallel grooif'es extending the full length of the part, said upper part on its lower face being formed with a circular recess and a groove extending diagonally to near one corner, a U-shaped clamping member overlapping each end ot' said lower part for clamping a piece ot sandpaper to said lower part, each of said clamping members having a pair of guiding arms, said guiding arms being positioned in said grooves in the lower part, one guiding arm of each pair having a pin extending 11pig i groove whereby the thumb lof the hand grasping the block may press the arm for rotating the disk suiioiently vto maintainY 10 said Clamping members in clamping position.
