CHARLES Nauen. or entrronr, missies LiwLnie, or
Application filed (bctober 2, 1923. erial To all whom t may concerny Be it known that. I, Criannns Nauen, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Gulfport, in the county of l rison and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Veighing Scoops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to scoops especially adapted for picking up granular and other matter.
Briefly stated an important object of this invention is to provide a scoop having siniple means whereby to weigh the contei of the same so as to overcome the necessity of pouring the contents of the scoop into a separate scale.
A further object is to provide a combined scoop and scale which is simple to use, duraable in construction and cheap to manufacture.
Uther objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure l is a side elevation of the improved scoop and scale, the handle being shown in section to illustrate the scale.
Tiigure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the handle, the lever of the scale being shown in the position it occupies when the scoop is ladened with granular or other matter.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary plan view illustrating the handle and a portion of the scoop.
Figure 4 is a detail transverse sectional view taken on line t-/i of Figure i.
Figure 5 is a perspective illustrating an indicating arm or lever embodied in the invention.
ln the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 5 riesignates a scoop adapted for piclzing up and carrying any granular or other mattei' and as illustrated in Figure l the scoop which is carried longitudinally has its rear end portion connected to the flanges 6 of an approximately i -shaped depending extension 7 on the forward end of a main lever 8. The apno. eeaiefi.
pronimately l.-shaped depending extension 7 is secured to the rear end of the scoop by the tianges 6 and by fasteningdevices 9 which extend `hrmagh the top of the scoop. The deuending L 'haped extension 7 terminates in a return bend which constitutes a bumper i0 adapted to be engaged with the under side of a hollow handle ll so as to hold the scoop il against extensive movement with relation to the handle when the scoop is being moved through a body of material for the purpose of loading the scoop.
rlhe levfr S is received in the handle ll and is held in position by means of a combined attaching and tensioning leaf spring la, the said leaf spring being of U-shaped formation and having a bight portion l5 secured flatly in engagement with the rear end of the handle ll by means of fastening devices l5. it will be seen that the combined attachinoand tensioning leaf spring is proi ded with a short branch 16 secured to the rear portion of the lever 8 by fastening devices l? and with a long branch curved longitudinally and fiatly engaged with the lower edge of the lever 8 so as to normally hold the lever in the position illustrated in Figure l.
ifi thumb screw 1S is threaded through the bottom of the handle il and is engaged with the long branch of the U-shaped spring 1S so as to tension the same. By this means the scales may be adjusted.
The forward portion of the handle 8 is enlarged considerably and encloses the major' portion of a main indicating lever 20, the lower portion of which is provided with a pivot pin 2l extended through the handle and connected to opposite sides of the same as illustrated in Figure el.
is illustrated in Figure 5 the lever 2l is provided at its lower end with a lateral branch having a slot 24 extended longitudinally thereof and adapted to receive an actuating pin 25, said actuating pin being extended 'hrough the forward `portion of the lever 8. lt will be seen with reference to Figure -i that the forward portion of the lever S is considerably enlarged and is provided with a slot 27 extended out through the upper and lower edges thereof and receiving the lever 2O so as to hold the lever against lateral movement. However, the slot is of ample length to allow the lever 2O to partake of a free pivotal movement on the pin 26 when the lever 8 is moved eitherI up or down.
The upper portion of the lever 20 is provided with a pointer 30 which plays over the curved portion of the handle ll and eeoperates with the calibrations in indicating the weight of the contents of the scoop.
In operation the operator grasps the handle ll and introduces the scoop into the materia-l to be weighed and the curved terminal portion l() of the L-shaped attaching extension 7 will contact with the bottom of the hollow handle ll and thereby limit the movement of the scoop with relation to the handle.
One side 0f the handle Yll is provided 1ith a weighted indicator 39 pivotally supported by a pivot pin t0 and the said indicator cooperates with one or more calibrations on the handle 1l to indicate when the. handle is held level or horizontal. lVhen the handle ll has been adjusted in a horizontal position while in the hands of the operator the indicating level' 20 and more particularly the pointer 30 thereon will cooperate with the calibrations 30 to vindicate the weight of the contents ef the scoop.
Attention is especially directed tothe fact that during the filling of the scoop the forward end of the hollow handle ll is entirely closed by the lever S and the adjacent portion of the depending extension T so that no granular or other matter can accidentally enter the handle. Furthermore, it will be seen that all the major parts of the scale are enclosed within the handle and are protected thereby so that the device will stand rough usage.
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that such minor changes in arrangement and construction of parts ma i be made as will remain within the spirit of the invention and the scope of what is claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is zd l. The combination with a hollow handle open at its forward end, of a lever swingable in the handle having a spring in connection therewith controlling its movement and having its forward end provided with a depending extension at the forward end of the handle, a scoop connected to said extension, and an indicating member pivote-d within said handle, said indicating member being provided with a slot, and a pin carried by said first named lever and movable in said slot against the walls thereof where by to swing said indicating member by movement of the said lever.
2. rlhe combination with a hollow handle open at its forward end, of a lever received in said handle and having its forward end provided with a depending approximately L-shaped extension, a scoop connected to said extension, an indicating lever pivoted to said handle, said indicating lever being provided with a transverse branch havin a longitudinal slot, a pin carried by sai first named lever and received in said slot whereby to actuate said indicating lever, and a combined attaching and tensioning leaf spring secured in said handle and having a branch rigidly seemed to said first named lever and having a second branch flatly engaged with the lever and normally holding the same in a set position.
3. The combination with a hollow handle open at its forward end, of a lever received in said handle and having its forward end provided with a depending approximately L-shaped extension, a scoop connected to said extension, an indicating lever pivoted to said handle, said indicating lever being provided with a transverse branch havin a longitudinal slot, a pin carried by sai tlrst named lever and received in said slot whereby to actuate said indicating lever, a combined attaching and tensioning leaf spring secured in said handle and having a branch rigidly secured to said first named lever and having a second branch latl en gaged with the lever and normally ho ding the same in a set position, the forward portion of said main lever being provided with a slot extending out through the upper and lower edges thereof and receiving said indicating lever whereby to hold the indicating lever against excessive lateral movement.
4. The eon'ibination with a hollow handle open at its forward end, of a lever received in said handle and having .its forward end provided with a depending approximately L-shaped extension, a scoop connected to said extension, an imlieating lever pivoted to said handle, said indicating lever heilig provided with a transverse branch havin a longitudinal slot, a pin carried by said first named lever and received in said slot, whereby to actuate said indicating lever, a combined attaching and tensioning leaf spring secured in said handle and havin a branch rigidly secured to said first name lever and having a second branch flatly engaged with the lever and normally holding the same in a set position, the forward portion of said main lever being provided with a slot extending out through the upper and lower edges thereof and receiving said indieating lever whereby to hold the indicating lever against excessive lateral movement, said depending extension and said first named lever constituting a means for normally closing the forward end of said handle and said extension being provided with a return bend constituting a bumper.
