STARTING ATTACHMENT FOR HYDROCARIBON BURNERS.
Application filed April 18, 1923. Serial No. 632,860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be'it known that I, LESLIE R. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Die 0, in the county of San Diego and State 6 of California, have invented a certain new and useful Starting Attachment for Hydrocarbon Burners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hydrocarbon l burner starting attachments, and the objects I of my invention are: first, to provide a starting apparatus of this class for burners in which steam is mixed with the fuel to aid combustion or-in which steam is used to vaporize liquid fuel and mix with the same to facilitate combustion, second, to provide an apparatus of this class for quickly generating steam for hydrocarbon burners of the class mentioned; third, to provide an apparatus of this class in the form of a coil in which paper, wood, or other readily combustible material may be placed for generating steam in the same; fourth, to provide an apparatus of this class which, when steam is generated in the coil thereof and conducted to the hydrocarbon burner, will ignite the gases issuing therefrom, which ignited gases will play upon the coil, thus continuing to generate steam in the same; fifth, .to provide an apparatus of this class which, when used in connection with a boiler, may be shut off, disconnected and removed from the fire box of the'boiler when sufficient steam has been generated in the boiler to conduct steam to the burner; sixth, to provide an apparatus of this class which will generate sufiicient steam to operate the fuel oil pump for the burner until steam is generated in the boiler, and seventh, to provide a novellyconstructedapparatus of this class and an apparatus which is particularly simple and economical of construction,durable, efficient, and which will not readily deteriorate due to the intense heat of the burner and which will not readily get out of order. With these and other objects in view, as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain 'novel' features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon, which form a part of this applicatiomin which:
Figure 1 is a sectional elevational View of I a boiler, taken substantially through the middle thereof, in which a hydrocarbon burner is used to supply the heat and showing my apparatus positioned in the fire box thereof and connected to a water supply main and to the burner; Fig. 2 is an en larged, fragmentary, sectional elevational viewthereof with the section taken through the middle of the coil, showing wood positioned therein for firing the .same, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view thereof taken through 33 of Fig. 2.

In Figure l of the drawings I have shown a conventional shell boiler 1, supported and enclosed by the conventional masonry structure 2. Below the forward end of said boiler is provided the fire box 3 into which is directed the flame from the hydrocarbon .burner 4:, which is positioned in the burner opening 2 of the structure and supported by the front shell 5 of the structure. Through the front wall of the masonry structure 2 and below the burner opening 2 is provided another opening 2 for removing ashes and the like and which is made sufficiently large for the introduction of the steam generating unit or coil 6 therethrough into the fire box 3, substantially as shown in Fig. l of the drawings. The steam generating coil 6 is preferably made from a relatively heavy tubing, helically formed so that paper, wood, oily waste or other readily combustible material may be readily positioned therein for heating the same. Said coil 6 is provided with tubular conductors 7 and 8 extending therefromand through the opening 2 one of which conductors is provided at its extended end with a hose fitting, which is adapted to be connected to a water main 9 by means of a hose 10, a needle valve 19 being positioned in the line between the water main and the coil 6. The other conductor 7, which isconnected to the remote endof said coil and extends through the middle thereof, is adapted to be connected to the steam line 11, which communicates with the burner, by means of the union 12. Said steam line is also connected to the upper portion of the steam boiler l by means of the conductor 13. Valves 1 1 and 15 are provided near the adjacent ends of the conductors ll and 13, the conductor connectin said valves being connected to the condu r 16 which is connected to the burner l, and another conduct-or 20 extending therefrom being adapted to be connected to a fueloil pump for said burner. Saic valves are pro vided so that the one provided at the end of the line connected with the boiler may be closed oil when the bur er is connected up with the steam generating coil 6 and the valve l l may be closed when sui'licient steam is generated in the boiler to' supply the burner. A valve 18 is provided on said burner to adjust the fuel thereto from the fuel conductor 17 connected to a fuel supply line.
To start the burner the coil 6 is posi tioned and connected as described and a fire kindled inror around the coil. As the coil is sufficiently heated, the needle valve 19 is opened and water allowed to flow through the heated tubes, generating steam instantly, which steam is conducted to the burner'for vaporizing and mixing with the fuel oil, which vaporized fuel oil is then ignited by the tire in or around the coil.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of'parts and portions, I do not wish tobe limited-to this particular construction, combination and arrangement, but desire to includein the scopeof my invention, the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
It is obviousfrom this construction that there is provided a starting apparatus for hydrocarbon burners in which steam is mixed with the fuel and used to atomize liquid fuel and which will. start the burner in a relatively short period of time; that there is provided an apparatus of this class in which a coil. is used for generating the steam for the burner, which coil is adapted to be positioned in the fire box of the boiler structure and adapted to be disconnected and readily removed therefrom when suficient steam has been generated in the boiler tosupply the burner; that there is provided an apparatus of this class in which paper, wood or other readily combustible material may be placed within the coil for heating the same, and which is so positionedin the line box that the flame oi the burner will be directed thereon so as to continuously generate steam bettore steam is generated in the boiler for said burner; that there is provided a. novelly constructed starting apparatus for hydrocarbon burners, and an apparatus of this class which is very simple and economical of construction, durable, efficient, and which will not readily deteriorate due to the intense heat from the hydrocarbon burner. and which will not readily get'out o'f order,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as newand desireto securebyLetters Patent, is:
1. In an attachment for starting hydrocarbon burners, the combination with a hydrocarbon burner of a hollow, continuous hydrocarbon burner of a hollow, helical,
tubular, steam generating coil, adaptedtobe quickly positioned in the firebox into which the-flame of said burnen is;-dire eted,- and means for readily and quickly connecting and disconnecting said coil with a water main and said burner Wherebythe-generator may be quickly removed as soon as-the fire'is started.
3. In an attachment for starting hydrocarbon burners, the combination with a hydrocarbon burner of ahelical, tubular coil in which is adapted to be placed non-liquid hydrocarbon and which coil is adapted to be positioned in afire lOOX' into which the flame of said burner isdirected', conductors extending from said" coil, hose'meanscom necting one of said conductors with a water main, and a union connectingthe other of said conductors with said'burner whereby the generator may be quickly removed as soon as the fire isstarted in an attachmentfor starting hydro carbon burners, the combination with. a hydrocarbon burner of ahollow, continuous steam generating unit adapted to be positioned in the firebox in which the flame of said burner is directed, conductors extend ing from said steam'generating unit, hose means connecting one of saidmconductors with awater main, and a union connecting the otherof saidconductors with. said burner whereby the generator may be; uickly removed as soon as the fire is-started.
5. In an attachment for starting hydrocarbon burners, the combination with a hydrocarbon burner of a removable steam generating unit, adapted to be positioned in the fire box-into which the flame of said burner is directed, andmeans in connection therewith for readily and quickly connecting and disconnecting saidcoil'with a water main and said burner whereby the generator may be quickly removed as soon as the fire is i started;
6. In anattachment forstarting hydrocarbon burners, the combination with a hydrocarbon burner of av removablezsteain generating unit, adapted to be: positioned in the fire box into which the flame of said burner is directed, means in connection therewith for readily and quickly connecting and disconnecting said coil with a water main and said burner, and Valve means for regulating the flow of water to said steam generating unit and regulating the flow of steam therefrom whereby the generator may be quickly removed as soon as the fire is started.
7. In an apparatus for starting hydrocarbon burners, the combination with a hydrocarbon burner of a steam generating means in connection therewith for readily connecting and. disconnecting said steam generating unit With a water main and a steam line connected to said burner whereby the generator may be quickly removed as soon as the fire is started.
