Description

Patented Jan. 6, 1925.
UNITED s'ra'iss ROBERT R. DUNLOP, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, .ASSIG-NOR TO ING COMPANY, CF COLUMBUS, oHIo, A CORPORATION oF oIIIo.
.ELECTRIC LoCoFIoTIvF.
Y Appimatin sied .Iuiy 12,
To all towmjz' mctyrcomevvt:`
Be it known that I, ROBERT R. DUNLOP,
a. citizenof the United States, residing at Columbus,-in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Locomotives, of which the following is a specification, reference being had: therein tothe accompanying drawing.- j The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in electric locomotives, and particularly tolocomotives of the class which is adaptedto use in the restricted passages of coal mines-and similar underground workings.
In electric cars, such as are commonly employed in interurban and street railway service, the grid resistance elements which form a part of the motor controllingmechanism, are commonly. mounted upon the under side of the car floor in position to be conveniently inspected and repaired.
Locomotives designed for service-in the restricted passages, and under tlietryingV conditions of service inV coal mines, are necessarily much more `compact than. are similar vehicles designed for usev above ground, and the auxiliary devices necessary to the manipulation vof these locomotives must be more fully protected from inechanica-l injury than is necessary above ground. In mine locomotives it has heretofore been f customary to mountvsuch devices inside the Y frame ofl the locomotive in comparatively 35 inaccessible positions.
g It is the especial object of this invention to provide improved mountings for the electrical resistance elements .of coal ymine locof motives whereby said elements will be fullyV protected from mechanical linjury and will be conveniently accessiblefor inspection and repair. 1
The devices 'by which I attain this object are fully disclosed in the following specification reference being had to the accompanying drawings of which,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an electric locomotive equipped with the devices of my invention. j
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical cross section taken along the line II-II of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a. fragmentary horizontal section taken along the line'III-III of Fig. 2.
Y Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing the door of the resistance compartment i922. Seriana-574,561,
:cnn JEFFREY MANUF-ACTUR- partly open to disclose the'fincluded resist- A ance element;
Like numerals refer to similar parts' in f the several liigures. i n
In Fig. 1 of the drawings I have shown an electric locomotive, especially designed for Service in coalmines, comprising a main v frame 1 whichis built up of suitable structural steel platesV and shapes, and'within which are mounted the electric motors, not shown in the drawings,by which the locomotive is. actuated. rlhe frame y1 is mounted upon driving wheels. 2 adapted to travel along the rails 3 `of. the mine .tr-ack, and which are secured to the locomotive frame, and connected by suitable gearing with the electric motors, in the manner` well understood'in the art. actuationl of the electric'motors'is derived from the 'trolley wire through the trolley pole 5 and is controlled by a. suitable con@ troller 6 positioned within convenient reach of the operator, and bysuita'ble electric resistance elements 7 connected therewith. As
these-devices are well understood inl the art, and as they formy no part in the present invention, further illustration and descriptionV of them is not thought to be required at thisv time. l 1.
The locomotive frame. 1 comprises the side Electric current for the Y sills 8 and the end sills'9 which are formed j by which the locomotive is connected with i its. load. Sand boxes 14 attached to the side sills 8 are arranged to deliver` sand through the spouts 15 Vto the track rails 3 adjacent the wheels 2; The end sills 9 and the iioor plates 11 project laterally beyond the'sidesills S, and the spaces included between the projecting ends ofthe sills 9 and the sand boxes 111 are roofed over by plates 416 se-Y cured to the side sills 8 to form chambers in which lthe yresistance elements 7 Vare mounted. Cover plates 17 connected to the locomotive frame by hinges 18, are arranged to close the resistance chambers and to protect the included resistance elements from mechanical injury. The resist-ance elements 7 may be of any preferred type, butare here illustrated as of the-well known multiple grid type, and are securely bolted to and swing with the cover plate 17. The electric conductor cables 19 afford such fiexibility of connection that the cover plate 17, together with the resistance elements 7, may be swung to the open position Without disturbing the electrical connections of the resist-ance. Capv Vscreivs V2() extending through apertures in teriiai` objects, and are adapted to be ex-` moved te positions covenient for peclitieiisly the inspection and repair without disturbing electrical connections of the locomotive.
