Application filed June 21,1924. SeriaLNbL 721,406.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, HARRY J. VVILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, anda resident of Brooklyn, in the county of.- Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Labeling Machines, of which the following is a specification. I i l This invention relates to improvements in labeling machines, more particularly to a picker mechanism for transferring labels from label boxes to articles to be labeled,
and the Objects of the invention are to im prove the picker mechanism so that'it will act in conjunction with a paste roller and a J grip finger to apply paste to the entire sur-' face of the label so that it will stick throughout its entire surface areaowhen applied to an article to be labeled. i a
To the accomplishment of the above ob-- jects and to such others as may hereinafter appear-the invention comprises one or-more supplemental pickers arranged to close the space between the picker faces of the pickers, so that the pickers and supplemental pickers will receive a'layer of paste from the paste roller that will entirely cover the bottom surface ofthe label as it is removed from the label box, means are also provided for opening the supplemental pickers sothat' the grip finger can force the label into engagement with the article to be labeled, and as the pickers and supplemental pickers are removed wipers act to wipe the label on the article to be labeled so that the label will stick throughout its entire surface. v
The practical adaptation of this invention to a labeling machine, in one form of its embodiment, isillustrated in the drawings,
wherein- Flgure 1 1s a side vlew of azmachine with parts broken away equipped with picker patented AprilflG, 1912; it is to be understood, however, that the present inventionis equally applicable in a similar way to a ya riety of machines of this type.v
., In the drawings 1 designates the frameof the machine to the front of which is secured aplate 20 to which is secured one end of a.
bracket 21, to the other. end of which is ad-- justably secured a rest22 for cans, bottles or similar articles to be labeled. The rest in the present instance is arranged toremovably hold a small rectangular'can a suitable plates 7) and o secured tothe top of the rest being: provided for centering the can.
A suitable label box, in'the present instance one in number,'is provided andis supported in the upper part of the frameof the machine above said rest upon inclined rods 25. The label box is provided with label fingers 4, the lower ends of which are provided with lips 42 for holding a'pileof labels/l3. The labels are forced downward by means of a weight 45 engaged. by arod 47 which is supported in-a guide. 48. The
guide 48: is .securedto an arm 49 mounted on the frame, of the machine.
. Suitable pickers 52 are provided, the'inner endsof which are secured to a sleeve 5E3, looselylmounted' upon a. shaft 54;. secured to. the frame of themachine, [The top surfaces of the. outer ends of the pickers are provided with raisedportions orpicker faces .61' to which paste 'is applied for engaging the edges of the bottom label to .remo'vethen from the label box. Suitable means, not
, shown, but shown and described in the above referred to patent, are providedfor swinging the outer end ofthe pickers into engagement 'withthe bottom label in the pileof labels 43 and transferring the same to the article to be labeled on the rest 22L A; suitable paste, rollerl '63 is provided which is pivoted to arms 64 mounted' upon a' shaft 65 secured tothetopof the frame of the machine; The paste rolleris arranged: r
to move inward along the-raised portionsior picker faces 6l of the pickers,'fto coat them with a layer of. paste, during 'the upw'ard movement of said pickers, the paste roller on its inward movement being arranged to engagea roller 72 rotating in a pastebox 73 mounted in the frame. of thejmmnina'. S1111}:-
able means, not shown, batsman =dr.
'sc'ribed'inthel above refer-radio. patent, are
I and not at the center.
provided for swinging the paste roller into engagement with the pickers and into engagement with the paste box roller.
A suitable grip finger 86 is provided for end with a presser finger 87 for holding the label in position on the article to be labeled,
While the other end of the grip-finger is secured to one end of an arm 92 at right angles to the grip finger, the other end of said arm being secured to one end of a shaft 93 rotatably mounted on the frame of the machine. Suitable means, not shown, but shown and described in the above referred patent, are provided for swinging the grip finger into engagement with the label and holding it on the article to be labeled as the label is presented to the article to be labeled by the pickers. v
Suitable wipers 109 comprising yielding rubber plates, are provided for wiping the. label on the article to be labeled. In the present instance the wipers are secured in holders 110'pivoted to the ends ofcrank arms 111 which are pivoted to a'yoke plate 112 by means of studs 113. The other ends 115 of the crank arms are pivotally con-' nected to the upper ends of links 116 the lowerends of which are pivoted to a vertical slide 117. Suitable means, not shown, but shown and described in the above referred to patent, are provided for operating the wipers to wipe the label on the article to be labeled as soon as the same has been engaged by the grip finger and the pickers have moved upward.
From the above description it will be seen that labels removed from the label box and applied to an article to be labeled will only be attached at the ends or sides of the label In some cases this is a disadvantage, Where, for example, the
labeled surface is flat the label is inclined to pucker at the center where it is not glued, making the label unsightly and easily torn. In the present instance and in accordance with the present invention, the space between the outer ends of the adjacent picker bearing lugs f are securedin each'instance to a camshaft k which passes loosely through the bearing lugs g The cam shafts h are eachprovided with a. follower 2 each of which is arranged to slidably g g a curved c m slide j, the lower ends of which are secured to the rear end of the rest 22 by means of bolts 70. The followers 2' are kept into engagement with the cam slides j by means of spiral springs Z each of which is mounted onits corresponding cam shaft h. The springs Z act to close the supplemental pickers, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4, when the pickers have been moved upward above the cam slides j the upper ends of which are rounded as shown at m to open the supplemental pickers toward the end of their downward movement.
From the above description it will be seen that when in the operation of the machine the pickers 52 move upward, from the position. shown in Fig. 2, the supplemental pickers (Z will remain in open position due to the action of the cam'slides j until the supplemental pickers have passed beyond the ends of the cam slides; however, before this point is reached the wipers109 will have acted to wipe the label on the article to be labeled, on the rest, and the grip finger 86 will have moved upward out of the way.
In the further upward movement of the pickers 52 and as soonas the cam slides j have permitted the supplemental pickers d to close, the paste roller 63 moves inward from its outward position and rolls over the picker faces 61 of the pickers and the picker faces 6 of the supplemental pickers, so as to coat them with a layer of paste. On the further upward movement of they pickers the same together with the supplemental pickers engage the bottom label in the label box to completely cover the same with paste.
On the downward movement of the pick ers, with the bottom label withdrawn from the pile of labels, the cams 2' of the supple mental pickers d engage the rounded ends we of the cam slides acting against the springs Z to open the supplemental pickers, releasing the central portion of the label, now coated with paste, and free to be en gaged by the grip finger 86 and forced into engagement with the article to be labeled as the pickers 52 reach their lower position as shown'in Fig. 2. i In the further operation of the machine, from the position shown in Figure 2, the pickers 52 with the supplemental pickers al in open position, move upward to release the label now heldby the grip finger 86 in position on the article 'to be labeled, so as to permit the wipers 109 to wipe the label. The cam slides'y' 'aremadeof suflicient length so that on the upward movement of the pickers the supplement pickers will remainjopen a sufficient period of time to permit the grip finger to be removed after the wipers have completed or nearly completed their wiping operation, It is of course obvious that the supplemental pickers must be open to permit the grip finger to move either into position to engage the label label has been removed from the bottom of the pile oi": labels.
The provision of the'supplemental pickers as above described provides means for coating the entire surface of a label and applying it to an article to be labeled so that it will stick throughout its entire surface which is a great advantage in many instances and much to be preferred where the label is only pasted at the sides or ends leaving the center or unpasted portion to buckle and tear.
It is of course obvious that in place 01": two supplemental pickers only one can be used by making it of sufficient width to close the space between the pickers in which instance only one cam slide will be required.
While the invention has been described with particular reference to details of construction, the same is not to be considered as limited thereto, as many changes can be made and still fall within the scope of the invention set forth in the following claims,
