Description

Dec; 30. 1924. I 1,521,226 P. G. BQGDANOFF CENTRIFUGAL PUMP Filed Jan. 1921 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 PAUL 6. 5000mm Patented Dec. 30, 1924.
NIT-ED "STATES were GENTRIFUGAL PUMP.
Application filed January 28, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL G. BOGDANOFF,
.a citizen of Russia (who has applied for and taken out first citizenship papers in the United States), residing at Battle Creek, county of Calhoun, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improve- .ments in Centrifugal Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in centrifugal pumps.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved centrifugal pump of high elficiency.
Second, to provide in a centrifugal pump an improved packing means which is effective and may be adjusted to compensate for wear and is durable and at the same time economical in structure.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illusstrated in the accompanying drawing form: ing a part of this specification, in which:
Fig. I- is a side view of a centrifugal pump embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. II is a longitudinal detail section, a portion only of the pump being shown and parts being shown conventionally.
Fig. III is a detail transverse section on a line corresponding tonline -3 of Fig. II.
Fig. IV is a detail transverse section on a line corresponding to line 44 of Fig. II.
Fig. V is a detail longitudinal sectlon of a modification of my invention in which the gasket is omitted from the packing face of the impeller. v
Fig. VI is a similar detail longitudinal section of another modification in which the packing ring is omitted from the impeller, the coacting packing member having a smooth face.
Fig. VII is a detail longitudinal section corresponding tothat of Figs. V and VI further modi ed in which the packing member has annular channels in its face.-
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the Serial No. 140,601.
several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the casing, 2 the impeller, and 3 the impeller shaft of a centrifugal pump. These parts are shown only in such detail as is deemed desirable to illustrate my improvements.
The impeller 2 in the embodiment shown in Figs. I and II is provided with packing ring seat 4 in its packing face 5'for the resilient packing ring 9. Mounted within the casing is an annular packing member support 6 having a packing memher seat 7 in its inner face. The annular packing member 8 is arranged in this seat 7 to coact with the packing ring 9 arranged in the packing ring seat 4 of the impeller.
The packing member 8 is adjustably supported to secure the desired joint and to compensate for wear by means of the screws 10 carried by the packing member support. The packing member 8 has a rabbet-like recess 11 on its outer edge to receive the gasket 12 and the follower 13. This follower has a beveled face 14 coacting with the gasket and is adjusted by the screws'15 to clamp the gasket in place to insure a tight joint.
With this arrangement of parts the packing member 8 may be accurately adjusted to secure the desired working fit and to take up for wear.
. In the modifications shown in Figs. V, VI and VII, the packing face 5 of the impeller is a flat or plain face, that is, it has no resilient packing ring as 9 mounted therein.
In the modification shown in Fig. V, the packing member 8' has annular corrugations 16 on its face.
In the modification shown in Fig. VI, the packing member 8 is the same as shown in Fig. II having a plane face coacting with the plane face of the impeller.
In the modification shown in Fig. VII, the packing member 8" has annular channels 17 in its face. Any of the modifications shown in Figs. V, VI and VII are quite.
efficient as the packing member may be accurately adjusted tosecure a nice fit and they are effective in preventing the passage of the fluid, especially when corrugated or channeled as shown in Figs. V and VII.
My improved centrifugal pump is of. high efliciency and very durable. I have not attempted to illus rate 9% d scribe certain other modifications oradaptations which ll contemplate as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to'which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired. 4
Havin thus described my invention, what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a centrifugal pump, the combination of. a rotary impeller having an annular channel-like packing rin seat in the side thereof, a resilient packing ring disposed in said seat, a casing provided with an annular packing-member-support having a packing member seat therein opposed to the.
packing ring on said impeller, an annular packing member disposed in said seat in said support-member to coact with said packing ring on said impeller, said packing member being recessed on its outer edge, adjust ing screws for said packing member carried by said support, a gasket arranged in said support on the outer side of said packing member, a follower for said gasket disposed in the recess of said packing member and having a beveled face coacting with said gasket, and adjusting screws for said follower carried by said support.
2. In a centrifugal pump, the combination of a rotary impeller having an annular channel-like packing ring seat in the side thereof, a resilient packing ring disposed in said seat, a casing, an annular packingmember-support removably mounted within said casing and having a packing member seat therein opposed to the packing ring on D said impeller, an annular packing member disposed in said seat in said support-member to coact with said packing ring on said impeller, adjusting screws for said packing .member carried by said support, a gasket arranged in said support on the outer side of saidpacking member, a follower for said gasket, and adjusting screws .for said follower carried by said support.
3. ,In a centrifugal pump, the combination of a rotary impeller having a packing face on the side thereof, a casing provided with an annular packing-member-support having a packing member seat therein opposed to the packing face on said impeller, an annu-' In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
