IMPROVEMENT IN REFRIGERATORS.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a refrigerator, as will be hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in whichvFigure l is a perspective view of a refrigerator embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
A represents the refrigerator-box, which is provided with a series of trays, E, an outer lid, G, and an inner lid, F, both of said lids having Ventilating-openings j' f, as shown. In the bottom of the refrigerator is formed a pan or water-chamber, B, above which is the icedrawer C. VThis ice-drawer may be inserted either from the front or either end, as desired, and when inserted a door, D, fills up the side of the refrigerator. In the bottom of the icedrawerO is an aperture, a, for the passage of the waste water from the ice-drawer to the waterchamber B below. b represents the wastepipe to carry off the surplus water from the waterchamber, said pipe being below the bottom of the refrigerator, provided with the ordinary seal to prevent the ingress of air to the inside. The upper end of the waste-pipe b extends a suitable distance above the bottom ofthe water-chamber, so as to retain a body of water in the bottom ofthe refrigerator. Between this body of water and the bottom of the ice-drawer is thus constantly retained a body of cold air, which prevents the ice in the drawer from melting as fast as it otherwise would. A. pipe, h, with spigot, is provided to draw off all the water from the chamber B.
The ice-drawer O is open at the top and can be drawn out and inserted, so as to introduce the ice without removing the articles in the refrigerator.
rIhe water-chamber forms a part of the refrigerator, and the drawer O can be removed without, in any manner, affecting the water in the chamber. y
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is-
rIhe combination with the refrigerator-box A, with inner and outer' lids F Gr, and one or more removable trays, E, of the water-chamber B, waste-pipe b extending above the bottom of the water-chamber, and the removable icedrawer O, the water-chamber being independent of the ice-drawer, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of March, 1874.
