It is an object of this invention to simplify the structures of such a bearing, par
ticularly ofya three-part bearing, cornprising a housing, tearing. plate and roller byconstructing thesaine so that the bearing plate and roller can be inserted from the top of the housing. i
It is a further object of theinvention. to provide such a bearing having a roller which rolls on the bearing plate andmniovcsllom gitudinally of the housing, which roller has an axially extending projection adapted to move in a recess in the housing, which; recess has an upwardly extend1ngport1on through which the said projection is adapted to passwhen the roller is placed 1n-the housing, the housing further havlng means to close said portion. after the r'ollerds inserted.

A bearing plat 9 is disposed ported upon the plate 9. This roller has,
an axial projection 12 extending from one side thereof forined by a pin secured in said in the bot- '1 tom of the housing, the lower portion of which is shapedto be received between the rollerand this projection is adapted to move in the slot 7 during the travel of the roller along the surface of plate 9. The roller 11 is also adapted to be inserted in the housing from the top in the assembling of the device and, in such insertion the projection 12 will pass through the portion 8 of slot 7. After the roller has thus been inserted in the housing, the slotportion 8 is closed by a bolt having a head 13 disposed in said slot portion. This bolt extends through an opening in the housing and is illustrated as having its head riveted over on the outside of the housing. One side of the roller 11 is formed with a flat face giving a large bearing and wearing surface against the inner side of the housing...
In operation the bearing roller normally occupies the position shown in Fig. 2. Upon relative movement of the surface engaging the top of the roller and the truck bolster, as when the caris going around a curve, the roller will be turned and travel in one direction or'the other upon the bearing plate 9. At this time, the projection 12 will.
move in the slot 7 As the roller travels up the incline toward the ends of plate 9 it will return to its central position by gravity.
The roller is prevented from rising in the housing by the projection 12 engaging the topof the slot 7 and this projection cannot, of course, move out of said slot through the opening 8 since the latter is closed by the bolt head 13. As already stated, the" device is-assembled from thetop, the corners 10 of the plate resting upon the corners 5 of the housing and the roller being inserted after the plate is inserted. The triangular corners 5 thus not only form reinforcing means tying the walls of the housing together and adding to the strength and rigidity of the same, but also acts as a supporting means for the plate It should be noted that the side walls of the housing are continued as vertical flanges to the upper portion of the end walls so that a strong substantially rectangular housing is pro vided. The housing is provided with suit able cored openings to lessen the weight thereof and it will be noted that the plate 9 is also provided with longitudinally extending cored slots.
From the above description it is seen that applicant has provided an improved form of side bearing. The bearing is'quite strong and can be easily and conveniently assembled from the top. The bearing has been tested in actual practice and found very eflicient for the purpose intended.
It Will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, de-
tails, amangement, and proportions of the j parts without departing from the scope of apphcants invention, which, generally stated, consists in the matter shown and de top of said housing, and a roller supported on said bearing plate. I

The structure set forth in claim 1, said roller having an axially projecting portion, and said housing having a horizontal slot in which said projecting portion moves during the travel of the roller, said slot being constructed and arranged to permit the insertion of said roller from the top of the housing.
3. The structure set forth in claim 1, said bearing plate having an upper portion substantially fitting in said opening adjacent the bottom-of the housing and having a lower portion disposed between said substantially triangular portions of the housing, the bottom of said latter portion being substantially flush with the bottom of the housing.

A side bearing for railway cars having in combination, a housing having side walls with substantially fiat vertical inner surfaces, a bearing plate in the bottom of said housing insertable from the top thereof and supported on the bottom of said housing. and a bearing roller having an axial projection thereon, said roller-also being insertable from the top of said housing, said housing having a longitudinally extending slot in itsside in which said projection travels, said roller being prevented from rising by the upper wall of said slot.
