" HOWARD H. JOHNSTON, OF EDGEWOOD, PENNSY :evANI'AJv AssrGNoR To WEs'rING- HOUSE ELECTRIC`& MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CoaroRATroN or PENNSYL- VANIA.
ELECTRIC LoCoMoTIvn.
Application iled'January 6, 1921. Serial No. 435,319.
To all whom it, 'may concern.'
Be it known that LllowARD H. JOHN- sTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident oi Edgewood, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electric Locomotives, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to electric locomotives and particularly to means for mounting` control apparatus therein.
One object of my invention is to provide a construction wherein the .main control switching units are so mountertwithin a housing as to be conveniently accessible for renewals or repairs.
Another object of my invention is to arrange certain of the switching apparatus in such manner that they may be swung clear oi' the enclosing compartment and may be removed therefrom, either as units or collectively, and, when swung to exposed position, will uncover other portions of the apparatus which may be secured to the star tionary portions of the compartment.
My invention provides for the securing of certain of the main controlling and switching units to the inner side of the hinged cover plates which may be swung outwardly, carrying with them the apparatus secured thereto, and` it desired, these hinged cover plates may be removed and other cover plates and switching apparatus substituted therefor.
As shown in the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is an end elevational view of a mine locomotive, a portion being broken away to show the application of my invention thereto, and
Fig. 2 is a view, in side elevation, showing the cover plates in raised positions.
My invention is shown as applied to an ordinary mine locomotive 3, provided with a usual trolley t and a compartment 5 for housing the control apparatus.
The control apparatus may be of any desired character, such as contactors 6 and a reversing switch 7.' These parts function in the usual manner and will not be de-l scribed herein in detail.
The contactors 6 are individually secured to a pair of iron bars 8, through the medium of blocks 9, preferably oit' wood or other insulating material, and the bars 8 are, in turn, secured to a hinged cover plate 10 by means of bolts 11.` The bars 8 are insulated from the cover plate 10 by members 12 of any suitable insulating material.
The reversing switch 7 is securedto a hinged cover plate 13 and is provided with la cover 111. vVvlhen the hinged cover plate 13 is swung to exposed position, the plate 141 may be removed trom the reversing switch if only minor repairs are to be made. For
more extensive repairs or for the substitu-y i tion of a new switch, a Aflexible conductor 15 may be disconnected therefrom and the kswitch removed from the plate 13, or the plate 13 may be removed `and be replaced by another plate and switch.
The contactors 6 may be removed independently by disconnecting terminals 16 and un'fastening the contactors from the blocks 9 or they may be removed collectively by breaking the electrical connection, as at 17, and removing the cover plate 10 trom its hinges, or by disconnecting the bars 8 from e the cover plate.
The advantage of the foregoing arrangement resides in the fact that repairs or replacements inay be quickly made and, if a portion only of the apparatus requires repair, that particular unit may be quickly removed and another unit substituted therefor.
Besides insuring easy accessibility of the parts carried by the hinged covers of the compartment, these parts, when swung to open position, expose other apparatus in thel compartment, such as resistance grids, and serve to render such other parts also easily accessible for replacement or repairs.A
l/Vhile my invention is shown as applied to a mine locomotive, it obviously may be til cover member, controlling units carried by the cover member, a unit-supporting member detachably secured to the lcover member, and means :tor detachably securing the controlling units individually to the supporting member.
3. In an electric locomotive, a comparte ment provided with a removable cover member .to which is secured contactor units mounted for removal either independently or collectively, and a second hinged cover member to Which the reversing switch is secured.-
4. In an electric locomotive, the combina-- tion With a housing compartment provided with a removable cover member, of supporting means comprising a bar secured to the cover member by insulated attaching means and provided With means for supporting the electric controlling apparatus.
5. In an electric locomotive, a compartment for housing the control apparatus comprising a plurality of hinged Walls and cover members, said control apparatus being removably mounted on said hinged members.
6.- In an electric locomotive, a compartment for housingvthe control apparatus comprising a plurality of hinged Walls and cover members, some of said hinged membersconstituting panels for mounting the control apparatus.
7. In an electric locomotive, a compartment for housing the control appara-tus comprising a plurality of hinged Walls and cover members, some of said hinged members constituting panels for mounting the control apparatus, said panels being removable as a unit.
8. In an electric locomotive, a compartment vfor housing the control apparatus comprising a plurality of insulating panel members movably mounted on a frame, having the control apparatus mounted thereon, said panels constituting an operating unit which may be replaced as to its several cooperating parts.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 27th day of December 1920. y i
HOVARD H. JOHNSTON.
