UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
PATRICK OGORMAN, OF JERSEYVILLE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-MARKERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,003, dated June 16, 1874; application filed January 22, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PATRICK OGQRMAN, of J erseyville, in the county of Jersey and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Gorn-Marker; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
having a pivoted bar carrying the marker, provided with an extension, by means of which it is adapted to be operated by the foot of the driver, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawing, the device is shown in combination with an ordinary sled-marker, the whole being in perspective.
A represents an ordinary sled-marker, to the rear cross-bar of which is pivoted, upon a projecting stud, a, an arm, B, the outer extremity of which is furnished with a marker, b, pointed at its front end, as shown in the drawing, so that either of its horizontal edges may be made to slide upon the ground, thus allowing the employment of the arm B on either side of the machine. Near the middle of the arm B is an eyebolt, from which projects diagonally a stay-rod, O, the front end of which terminates in a hook secured to the side of the sled by a staple, with which each side of the machine is provided. The extension f of the arm B is afoot-lever, whereon the driver places his foot in order to lift the marker I) over obstructions. The length of the arm B is such as to carry the marker 1) one space and a half from that side of sled upon which it is operated, thus producing a center line for the next course.
The operation of the device is as follows: The driver, taking his stand upon the crossbars of the sled A, lays ofl' his first course in the ordinary manner, having the arm B on that side of the sled upon which the next course is to be laid oif. Having reached the end of the first course, the arm B is lifted to a This invention consists of a corn-marker vertical position, and the sled turned round and brought into position for the next course, which is done by ranging the draft-pole as nearly as possible directly over the center line laid 011' by the marker 1), which is now allowed to trail upon the ground on the opposite side of the machine in consequence of the latter being turned round.
By these details it will be seen that instead of the driver having to make a bee-line for a distant pole, and shift the latter at the end of each course, he has but to keep the draft-pole of his machine over the. center line made by the marker 1) in order to lay off with accuracy equidistant and parallel lines upon the ground, however uneven.
WVhat I claim as my invention is- In a corn-marker, the bar B, pivoted as described, and-adapted, by means of the ex.- tension f, for operation by the foot of the driver, as set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 17th day of January, 1874.
PATRICK OGORMAN.
