MEDICINAL VAPORIZER.

To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, NELLIE G. ADKINS, citizen of the United States residing at St. Marys, in the county of lleasants and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements' in Medicinal Vaporizers, of which the following is a specification.
Primarily, my present invention has reference to a medicament vaporizer. Specically, the improvement is directed to a hot water bag or similar applicator which has associated therewith a medicament holder, in which the medicament will `bve vaporized by the action of the heat from the hot water bottle and diffused from the holder into the pores of that portion of the patient on which the hot water bottle rests as well as being directed through the mouth or nostrils to relieve pain or congestion in the nasal and bronchial tubes by acting directly upon the mucus accumulated in these parts.
A further object is the provision, in a hot water bottle, of a medicament holder which is removably associated with the bottle, and which has an outer apertured part through which the vapors from the medicament are diffused bythe action of the hot water in the bottle upon the said medicament, whereby the fumes of the medicament may be readily drawn into the mouth and nose of a patient, and whereby a dual treatment of heat and healing and soothing vapors is attained for quickly relieving a patient from pain, congestion, etc.
A still further object is the provision of a medicament holder for a hot water bottle which may be in the nature of a closure for said bottle and which has its outer portion apertured for the escape of the vapors from the medicament, and which further is of such construction that the bottle may be arranged upon any part of the patient without the liability of the medicament escaping through the holder.
A still further object is the production of a medicament vaporizer for hot water bottles that is characteristic of simplicity in construction, cheapness in manufacture and applicable to any ordinary .class of hot water |bottles. Y
To the attainment of the foregoing objects, and others which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, reference is to be had to the drawings which accompany and which form part of this application.

A hot water bottle, of the usual construction, is designated, in Figures l, 2 and 3 of the drawings, by the numeral 1. The neck portion 2 of the bottle 1 is provided with the usual funnel-shaped inlet 3, and the thickened neck is threaded. 1 is usually constructed of rubber, the threads in the neck are reinforced by a threaded sleeve 4. In this sleeve there is threadedly secured the'inner end of the cap portion 5 of themedicament holder. The cap portion has its outer end enlarged'and rounded and provided with a series of apertures 6. The bore, as well as the sides of the cap, from its said rounded end are tapered inwardly to the threaded neck portion thereof, and the restricted portion of the bore communicates with a restricted passage 7 provided in the neck and in a tubular extension 9 which extends from the neck of the cap. The tubular portion 9 of the neck has its inner end thickened and formed with an annular rounded shoulder 10, and from this shoulder the outer surface of the said extension is preferably tapered inwardly. Arranged on the tubular extension of the neck there is the medicament holder proper which is broadly indicated lby the numeral 11. In this instance, the holder 11 is preferably of flexible material, and incident to the inherent elasticity thereof, the same will tightly engage the shouldered portion 10 of the neck extension.. will be seen that when the flexible holder 11 is arranged upon the neck that a comparatively large space is afforded between the flared outer end 12 of the neck extension 1 and the inner wall of the flexible tube 1l. By this arrangement, a medicament of salve-like consistency arranged in the tube 11 and reduced by the action of the heat from the water in the bottle 1 to ay liquid formation, cannot find a. passage thro ugh the restricted passage 7 in the neck of the' cap, regardless of the angles at which the bottle is arranged on a patient. It will be further apparent that the action of the heat upon the medicament will quickly vaporize the same to force such vapors through the passage 7 and the bore of the cap 5, diffusing the said vapors through the apertures 6 so that the said vapors will be inhaled by the patient with healing effect.
As previously stated, the bottle 1 is of ordinary construction, and preferably I cement on the outer face thereof the edges of a rubber sheet to provide a pocket 13. The outer wall of this pocket is formed with series of apertures 1,4. The upper edge of the sheet 15, providing the p-ocket 13, is centrally formed with a tab 16 having an eyelet 17 embedded therethrough and this eyelet is designed to be engaged by a split spring metal head 18 secured in any desired manner on the outer face of the water bag 1. In Figure 2 of the drawings, the pocket 13 is shown as arranged on the bag in the manufacture thereof. Thus the p-ocket may be formed with the bag in the manufacture thereof or may, as previously described, be secured to any ordinary class of hot water bottles. The pocket is designed to receive therein a medicament holder 19 that has its inlet opening closed by a threaded cap 20, and lthat has its outer face provided with series of apertures 21 designed to register with the apertures 11 in the outer face 15 of the pocket 13. When the medicament is arranged in the holder 19, and is consequently subjected to the influence of the heat from the hot water in the bottle, the same will be vaporized and diffused through the aligned apertures 21 and 14 so'that such vapors will enter the pores of the patient, which will have been opened by the'action of heat from the hot'water bottle. Thus the soothing effect of the vaporized medicament will be directed through the pores of the patient against the seat of trouble to alleviate the pain and hasten the cure. Thus it will be noted that with my improvement a patient is treated by the heat from the hot water bottle, by the vapors of the medicament entering his pores at the seat of vtrouble and by the soothing and healing effects of the inhaled vapors.
In Figure 4 of the drawings, the construction is substantially similar to the cap or closure, constituting the medicament holder heretofore described, except that the 'cap proper, indicated by the numeral 22 is4 screwed or otherwise removably connected to the threaded neck or sleeve 23 which is screwed in the neck of the hot water bottlc. Also in this construction, the neck or sleeve 3 has an extension which is exteriorly threaded and which is 'engaged by the interior threads upon the tubular medicament holder 24. In this instance, the tubular element 24 is preferably constructed of aluminum or some other non-corrosive material or substance. The cap 22 has its outer portion apertured, as at 25. lVith this arrangement, the cap may be removed for the insertion in the bore thereof of a filtering medium such as raw cotton or the like. No dam or obstruction is provided to prevent the passage of the medicament through the restricted bore of the neck or sleeve 23 and the bore of the cap 22, as it is desirable that the liquified medicament be restricted in its passage through the cap by the absorbent body therein so that only the fumes therefrom will be directed through the apertures 25.
In Figure 5, the construction is substantially similar to that disclosed in Figure 4, except that inlieu of the cap 25 having the spherical head, I screw into the neck or sleeve 23 a nozzle 26. The nozzle has its outer end preferably provided with a Ysingle aperture 27. ,The nozzle is designed for treatment of nasal disorders, and the fumes therefrom directed into the passage in the nose of the patient will act upon the mucus accumulated therein aswell as in the mouth or throat to remove the same. Y In Figure 7 of the drawings, the water bag 28 has its neck arranged in the top and adjacent to one of the sides thereof, the said neck providing the filler opening for the bottle. The neckis closed by the usual threaded vcap 29. The top of the bottle 28, preferably at the center thereof, is integrally formed with an inwardly directed tubular portion 30 whoseend is rounded. The wall of the portion 30 is thickened at a suitable distance below the outer edge of the water bag 28, and in this thickened portion there is embedded an annular metal member 31 bent over the outer edge of the said thickened portion and continued inwardly therefrom, the last mentioned portion being formed with threads. These threads are engageable with similar threads formed on the tubular medicament holder 32. The medicament holder has its end rounded and is spaced from the walls of the portion 30 of the water bag. The medicament holder, at the outer terminal of its threads, is bent outwardly therefrom and from thence downwardly and inwardly to provide a head 33 that rests on the shoulder provided by the thickened end of the portion 30. The threaded mouth of the medicament holder 32 is engaged by threads on a hollow cap 34.- T his cap has its outer portion formed with apertures 35, and through these apertures the vapors from the medicament in the holder 32 are diffused.
The medicinal advantages of hot applications for alleviating pains and congestions are well known to the medical profession and to laymen, as are the advantages of healing and soothing fumes. Therefore, these treatments are commonly resorted to. Heretofore, it was necessary that a hot water bottle be provided and that a separate holder for the medicament be like- Wise provided. With my improvement it will be seen that I have combined in a single article an applicator for treating a patient with heat and a medicinal vapor in an easy manner that will be found convenient to both the patient and the nurse. The heat from the hot water bottle, as previously inferred, acts upon the medicament in the holder to liquefy the same and to diffuse the fumes therefrom through the pores of the part or parts allicted, as well as allowing the patient to conveniently inhale such fumes. It is therefore believed that the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings, will fully set forth the construction and the many advantages of my invention to those acquainted with the art to which such devices relate, but I wish to state that the nature of the improvement is such as to necessarily render the same susceptible of advantages and modifications, so I hold myself restricted,in the manufacture of my device only to the scope of what I claim.
Having described the invention, I claim 1. A hot Water bottle having a medicament holder provided with outer apertures removably associated therewith so that the medicament in the holder will be subjected to the heat from the hot water in the bottle to diffuse the fumes therefrom through the apertures in the holder.
2. A hot water bottle having a medicament holder provided with outer apertures ceptible to the arrangement of a filtering medium therein, and the medicament in the holder being acted upon by the heat from the hot water in the bottle to liquefy the same and to direct the fumes therefrom through the apertures ofthe holder.
4. A hot water bottle having a medicament holder provided with an outwardly flared apertured portion and forming a closure for the bottle.
5. A hot water bottle having a medicament holder whose outer portion is fiared outwardly and provided with a rounded top which is apertured, and whose inner ort-ion extends into the bottle, and said hol er providing a closure for the bottle.
6. A hot water bottle having a threaded inlet neck, a threaded closure sealing the neck, said closure comprising separable connected parts establishing a dam therebetween, the outer part being apertured, and the inner part providing a holder for a medicament.
