In the retail hand-ling of. peanut butter,

This presents a problem to the retailer, since, in the ordinary method lof scooping from the top of the can, he is obliged to get more of the oily substance than of the heavier, and this is not desirable, since,`unless the mass is of a uniform consistency, itcan not 'be used to the best advantage l The object of this invention, therefore, ,is
to provide mechanism that may be fixed upon such a can, ,or keg, wherein peanut butter, or the like, is received, and which embodies certain mechanism whereby the butter may be so agitated that it will he maintained 'at a uniform consistency throughout, and whereby it may be delivered from the .can into ldispensing recep# tacles in an easy, sanitaryand satisfactory manner whereby waste is avoided,
More specifically, it is the object of the invention to provide a pump which may be removably fixed upoira peanut butter container, and which embodies a screw conveyer mechanism that is ,operably extended within ,the can and. which, upon rotation, .will 'feed the'butter into a spout whei'efrom it may be delivered from the can into adispensing receptacle.
A `further objectv of the invention resides in the provision ot an agitator of a 'novel character thatis attached toF the lower end of the Nconveyer mechanism, and whereby upon rotation of theconyeyer, .the vbutter at the base of the canV will be stirred up bevfore it is delivered hythe conveyer.

In accomplishing these and other objects of tlie invention, l have provided the improved details of construction the ferred forms of which are illustrated ,in the accompanying drawings, wlierein Figure l is a central, sectional view through a container wherein peanut butter, or the like, may be shipped, and upon which is mounted a pump constructed and applied in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a. top view of the device. Figure 3 is a horizontal section, taken on the line 33 iu Figure 1, illustrating the construction of the agitator.

Figure 5 is an enlarged, sectional view, taken on the line 5--5 in Figure 3, showing the shape of the agitator.
Referring more in detail to the drawings- 1 designates a container of that ty )e wherein peanut butter is delivered to tlie retailer and which, at the'top, has an opening 2. Fitted upon the top of the ucan is a plate 3 whereoii the mechanism of the present device is mounted, and which has expretensions 4 projecting therefrom beyond the periphery of the can and in alineinent with like extensions 5 of a base plate 6 upon which the ca'n'is placed. It is intended that this latter late 6 be fixed to a support, of any suitabe character, and that rods, as shown at 7, be extended through apertures in the lextended parts and fitted with wing nuts 8 at their n per ends, whereby the plate 3 may be hel securely to the can and the canu will he anchored yin position.
The plate 3 has a central, depending. portion 10 throughwhich there is an opening 1l, and fitted within this opening and extending downwardly within? the can, is a cylindrical tube 12. wherein a screw conveyer 13 is in seated horizontally uponthe upper face of nted. A gear wheel-14 is 4and tube 12, and this gear has a concentric flange 15V on its under side fitted within the upper portion of the opening 11, so as' to prevent any possible displacement of the gear. Y
Mounted on the plate 3 in such manner las to serve as a continuation of the 'tube 12,
is a conveyer tube 16. This is fixed to the plate by means of bolts 17 which are extended through laterally projeetingianges 18\ 'formed integrally lwith the tube, as shown in Figure 2. The lower end of the tube coincides with the opening through the gear 14 and, at its upper'end, has a downturned spout 19 wherefrom the conoperation of the device.
The gear wheel 14 has a. central hub portion 22 which is supported from the toothed rim portion by means of a plurality of vanes 23 which are inclined toconform to the direction of the screw conveyer, so that they tents of the can may be discharged upon act therewith to advance the material fromis extended therethrough and through the hub to bind these parts 4tightly together. Since the gear is rotatably fixed between the plate 3 and lower end'of the tube 16, it is D apparent that the two screws will be retained in -functional position thereby and will be rotated upon rotation ofthe gear.
At its lower end, the rod 30 has a `squared portion 30 and, mounted upon this, is a laterally projecting, hook-like agitator arm 35.. The outer end of the agitator arm is directed substantially on a tangential line with its direction of travel, so that it easily penetrates the mass when it is advanced. In cross section, the agitator is scoop shaped, as shown in Figure 5, but not of -a shape that will retain the substance within it when advanced. This agitator arm acts as a means for working the mass toward the center and into the conveyer and, at the same time, stirs up the mass to keep it ,at the same con-V sistency.y
Mounted upon the plate 3 -in bearings 35 and 36 that are formed thereon, is a shaft 37l equipped at one endv with a gear Wheel 38 which operates in mesh with the 'gear 14 and, at its outer end, has a crank 39 Iixed thereto whereby the shaft may be rotated to actuate the conveyer.
It is also preferred that. the spout 19 be provided with a hook 40 on which a pail, or the like, may be suspended toreceive substances from the conveyer. .An opening 41 is also provided in the plate, directly beneath the spout so that Athe butter may be pumped through the conveyer and back into the can until it is thoroughly mixed ,before being dispensed. A plate 42 may also be fixed A pivotally'over.the\end of the spout to cut4 off the flow and'pre ent dripping.
Withthe device so constructed and ap-y I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. The combination with a container having atop opening, of a pump of the class described comprising a supporting plate {ixedly mounted upon the container and having an opening therethrough, a gear wheel mounted rotatably upon the plate having an opening therein concentrically registering with the plate opening, a conveyer tube mounted in the plate opening and extended within the container, another tube supported upon the. plate in alinement with the gearl opening and serving as acontinuation of the lower tube, screw conveyers mounted in the Having thus described my invention, what tubes and operatively connected to be driven by the said gear and means for rotating the gear. V
2. The combination with a container having a top opening, of a pump comprising a tube, screw conveyers mounted within the twotubes and operatively connected to -be driven by the said gear Wheel, an agitator arm xedrto the lower end of the screw of lthe lower tube` to extend outwardly and forwardly in a hook 'shaped manner and operable to advance material toward the conveyer as the latter rotates.
3. The combination with a containerhavi' extending wings, a conveyer tube mounted in the lplate opening and extended within the container, another tube removably supported uponthe plate with its lower end registering with the gear opening and servvtending laterally ing as a 'continuation of the lower tube, screw conveyersections located withint the tubes and xedly attached to the gear hub to be driven thereby, an agitator arm fixed 5 to the lower end of the lower screw and exwithin the container andl means for rotatlng thesaid the conve er mechanism. y 4.v A eviceA as set forth' in claim 1 gear to operate wherein the body of said arm being of a hook like character with its forward end tapered to a point and extended substantially in a line that is tangential to its line of movement, and in' cross secton`isl upwardly and rearwardly curved.
