Be it known that I, HENRY CAVE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hartford, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brooms, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates more especially to that class of brooms embodying a frame to which the broom-head is removably secured, and an object of my invention, among others, is to provide a structure of this class having means whereby the broom-head may be readily unfasteued or secured in place.

One form of broom embodying my invention, and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a broom frame showing a broom-head attached thereto by my improved securing device.

Figure 2 is a view in section on a plane denoted by the dotted line 2-2 of Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a view in section on a plane denoted by the dotted line 33 of Figure 1.

In the accompanying drawings, I have shown a frame 5 for a broom that is commonly constructed of metal bent or stamped to shape and having asocket 6 for a br0o1nhead 7, said head comprising the support to which the broom material 8 is secured in any suitable manner. This frame is usu ally provided with a shank 9 having a socket for a handle 10. The portion of the frame in which the broom-head is secured is so flexible that it will yield sufficiently to permit the broom-head to be forced from the socket. In order to secure the broomhead in its socket, ears 11 are provided, extending from opposite side parts of the frame comprising said socket, and these cars have been connected to clamp the broomhead securely in place. One means forsecuring said ears has comprised a ring that has been forced over lugs 12 formed on the outer surface of each of the ears and into notches 13. Ihis structure has been found objectionable for the reason that in order to efficiently secure the broom-head, the ring must be made so small as to require considerable force to locate it in the notches 18, and diiiiculty is then encountered in removing the ring for the purpose of unfastening the broomhead.

My invention, illustrated and described herein, embodies means for securing the ears together in a manner to overcome the objections above set out, my improved device comprising a ring 14 that is preferably formed from sheet metal and having an opening 15 for the reception of the ears 11. Notches 16 are formed on opposite sides of the opening 15 for the reception of the lugs 12 so that the ring may be placed over the ears with the notches 16 registering with the lugs 12 that are passed through the notches in the ring, and the ring is then rotated to locate fastening segments 17 between the notches 16 into the notches 13 in a manner that will be readily understood. Finger pieces 18 extending from opposite sides of the fastening ring are provided as a means for turning the same.

In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention, together with the device which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it understood that the device shown is only illustrative, and that the invention may be carried out by other means and applied to other uses than those above set out.

I claim- 1. A holder for broom heads comprising side parts forming a socket for a broomhead with ears extending from said side parts, lugs projecting from said ears to form notches on the outer surface thereof, and a fastening ring having an opening with notches in the edges thereof to receive said lugs and thereby enable the edge of the opening in the ring to be located in the notches formed by said lugs.

2. A holder for broom heads comprising side parts forming a socket for a broomhead with ears extending from said side parts, lugs projecting from said ears to form notches on the outer surface thereof, a fastening ring having an opening with notches to register with said lugs, fastening segments located between said notches, and means for turning said ring to locate forming a notch, and a fastening ring having an opening with a notch in the edge thereof to receive said lug and thereby enable the edge of the opening in the ring to be located in the notch formed by said lug.
