T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that we, CHARLES E. FISHER and PERCY 1V. AULAR, citizens'of the United States, residing at Titusville, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in. Drill-Stem Bushings for, Well- Boring. Apparatus, of which the followingv is a specification. r
v This invention relates generally to a wellboring apparatus but more particularly to the .sectional drive-bushing of the drill stem.
Its chief object is to provide the drive bushing with simple and reliable means for holding its sections togetheras a unit, to prevent their falling apartdurin the operation of withdrawing the bushing from the rotary table.
Another object of'the invention-is to construct the bushing sections so that they are identical in form and shape and readily interchangeable, rendering it unnecessary to make separate male and female sections and correspondingly reducing the cost of manufacture.
A further object is to provide the sections of the bushing with complementary interlocking means which permit the sectlons to be assembled and separated by arelatively' horizontal movement. v t
A still further object of the invention is to provide the bushing-sections with .novel means for reliably locking them against vertical movement relative to each other.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and arrangement of" parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the appended cla ms.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical section of the rotary table of a well-boring apparatus, showing our improved drive bushing in position. Figure 2 is an enlarged top plan view, partly in section, of the bushing. Figure 3 is a vertical section inthe plane of line 3-3," Fig. .2. Figure 4 is ape tive view of one 0' th bushing sections. This table is provided with a square center openin 12 inwhich is seated the usual split tableushing 13 having a bore whose upper portion 14 is square while its lower portlon 15 is conical. Seated in the bore of the table-bushing is the improved drive bushin 16 which is of the same sha as that 0 said bore and which is provlded with a square center hole 17 with which the drill pi engages, where- ,by the rotarymotion o the table is imparted thereto for-boring or drilling.
The im roved drive bushing preferably consists 0 two complementary half- sections 18, 18 which are identical in size and form, both possessing the same features of construction and includin duplex reciprocal interlocking elements. @lach section is rovided in its inner. or .meeting face wit a central longitudinal groove 19 which constitutes half of the bushing hole '17. Formed. integral with each section and located adjacent one of the longitudinal edges of its central groove is a male interlocking element preferably in the form of a substantially half dove-tail tongue 20, whilefarranged along its opposite edge is a similarly shaped female interlocking element in the form of a groove 21. The inner face 22 of the tongue 20, as shown in Figs. 2 and .4 is straight, so as to conform to and form a part of the corresponding sidewall of the square bushing hole 17, and that face of eachtongue and oove rallel with the main or meeting oint o the sections extends to one of the vertical or upri ht edges of the corresponding section. en the half sections are placed together in the posieach" section is preferably provided with a horizontally-sliding locking bolt 23 guided in openings24 located adjacent the upper end of the section" and at one side'of the longitudinal groove 19. ESaid locking-bolt is provi ed with a suitable handle26 and'the-bo'lt is reliably held in its retracted and projected positions by the handle thereof en aging in one or the other of a: pair of note es 27 formed in the corresponding upper end of each section.
In shifting thebolt from one position to the other, it is only necessary to grasp'its handle,rock the. same inthe proper direction to [withdraw it from the respective notch 26 shift "the bolt in the direction desired an then turn the handle into engagementwith the other notch.
The locking bolts 23, while preventing vertical dis lacement of the bushing "sections on eac other, also hold "them against pulling apart laterally relatively to each other and in a direction parallel to or at an angle-to the meeting faces'of the sections'. V I
If "desired, the bushing sections may be provided with the? customary loops 28 to which handles may be attached for convenie ntly handling these parts.
Aside from the advantages of simplicity of construction and cheapness of manufac- *ture, this improved drill'stem drive bush ing can be quickly assembled and dismembered and its sections can be reliably locked' [together to prevent their falling apart during the withdrawal thereof from the rotary table. Furthermore, by constructing the sections identical, in form with reciprocal tongues and groovesor equivalent interlock- [ing elements, the'sections are interchangeof the respective section, the groove of the able and it is'only necessary to manufacture andcarry in stockone'style of section, thus avoiding the use'of the separate maleand female sections heretofore required.
We claim as our invention:
.1. A drill stem bushing of the character described, comprising complementary sections, .each section having-on its inner face a tongue and a groove arranged to interlock" with the corresponding elements of the jother'section, one of the side walls of each 'tongue being exposed and forming a continuation of the corresponding side wall latter being open at the joint face there- ,of and at theside facing the opposite side I wall of said section.
2. A drill stem bushing of the character described, comprising complementary seci tions, each section having on its inner face separation in a plane at right angles to lattheir meeting faces, while permitting h yt e eral "separation thereof in substantial plane of to said meeting faces. 4. A fdrill-stem bushing of he character described, comprising a pair of interchangeable'sections, each section having reciprocal interlocking means, said means being constructed tolock' the sections against lateral separation in a plane at right angles to their meeting faces while permitting lateral separation thereof in the" planeof such" meeting faces, and separate means for locking said sections against relativelongitudinal displacement.
5. A drill stem bushing of thecharacter described, comprising a'pair of interchangeable sections, each section'having male and female elements arranged to interlock with the corresponding elements of the other secjtion for holding the sections against pulling apart laterall each section also having a movable loc (ing member arran ed to engage the other section to prevent ongitudinal displacement of the sections relative to each other. i
