FATE! OFFICE.
FRED EDWARD MILLER, OF W'ENATCHEE, W'ASHINGTON.
TRAFFIC SIGNAL.
Application filled April 15, 1922. Serial No. 553,023.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED E. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at We uatchee, in the county of Chelan and State of WVashington, have invented new and useful improvements in Traffic. Signals, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tratlic signals and comprehends the provision of a device of this character which is adapted to be arranged across the cowl of the vehicle and secured to the opposed, sides of the windshield, and includes signalling members which may be selectively actuated or projected beyond either side of the car, each signalling member being equipped with an electric light bulb automatically illuminated after the member is projected to an active position.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction,
' combination, and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this ap plication, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a view showing the device positioned upon a motor operated vehicle.
Figure 2 is an enlarged view in elevation of the device removed from the vehicle and one of the signalling members projected to an active position.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional View of the tubular casing.
Figure 5 is a detail view of one of the signalling members partly in section.
Figure 6 is a detail view of one of the operating elements for the signalling member.
The device forming the subject matter of the present invention comprises a tubular member which may be constructed from any suitable material, and of a length to extend across the cowl of the vehicle, being held associated therewith by means of suitable clamps 11, designed to embrace the windshield standards as illustrated. The tubular member 10 is equipped with spaced contacts 12 and 13 respectively which are connected by a conducting wire 14:, the latter being connected with a suitable source of current by means of the wire 15.
' Slidable within the tubular member 10 are signals A. and B respectively, and these signals are adapted to be singly projected to an active position beyond the tubular member and the sides of the car when desired. Each member includes a post having a large hollow portion 17, the latter supporting flag or the like 18, while also carried by the outer end of the reduced portion is an electric light bulb 19. Arranged within the large portion 16 of this post is a rack bar 20, while this por tion of the post is also slotted to receive the rack bar 21, which is arranged within the hollow tubular member 10 at a point diametrically opposite the rack bar 20. It is of course apparent, that the members A and B are identical in construction and operated in the same manner, so that a brief description of one will suffice for both. Arranged within the hollow member 10 is a bar 22 which is equipped with a knob 23 projecting through a slot 24: in the member 10, so that the said bar can be moved longitudinally of the member 10 as the occasion requires. The bar is bifurcated at one end and supports a toothed wheel 24 which meshes with the rack bars 20 and 21 respectively, and it will be noted that the toothed wheel operates in the toothed portion 17 of the post. The construction of these rack bars is such that the post or signalling member is projected from the tubular member in quick order, the ratio being approximately two to one. The knobs 23 of the respective bars 22 are arranged in convenient reach of the driver or operator of the vehicle so that either signalling member can be conveniently projected to an active position. Leading from the electric light bulb and passing through the post of the signalling member is a conducting wire 25 which has associated with one end thereof a resilient contact 26 and when the signalling member is projected to an active position, the latter memtioned contact is brought into engagement with the adjacent contact 12 of the hollow member 10, thereby closing the circuit to the bulb carried by the particular signalling member which has been actuated.
What it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily ap arent, I desire to have it understood that do not limit myself to What is herein shown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall Within the scope of What is claimed.
What I claim is A device of the character described comprising a casing, having a longitudinal slot therein, a standard longitudinally movable Within the casing and normally received therein, a signal carried thereby, rack teeth upon one face of the standard, rack teeth upon the inner face of the casing and opposed to the first mentioned rack teeth, and a manually operable longitudinally movable bifurcated bar in the casing a pinion journaled between the bifurcated parts of the bar and meshing with the rack teeth and capable of longitudinal movement Within the casing and an operating member connected With the: bar and projectingthrough the slot.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature.
