AUTOMATIC CLOSING DEVICE FOR WINDOWS.

Be it known that I, HARRY E. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Baltimore, county of Baltimore City, and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Closing Devices for IVindows, of which the following is a specification.
M T invention relates to fire windows, and in particular to the type of window in which the sashes will be automatically closed in the event of fire, by the action of heat on a fusible link. For the purposes of illustration, I have shown my invention as applied to a window of the type described in my Patent No. 1,241,090, issued September 25, 1917.
In the accompanying drawings which show an illustrative example of my invention, Fig. 1 is a sectional view adjacent one of the jambs, the top portion of the view being taken in such a way as to show the face of the jamb and the bottom portion of the view showing a section through the jamb; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of one jamb with the sashes in place; Fig. 3 is a section on line 38 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4: is a detailed section showing the tripping device and the manner of connecting the same with the weight for the lower sash, and Fig. 5 is a section of the same parts shown in Fig. 4 but taken at right angles thereto.
In the window shown in the drawings, 2 is the weight box forming part of the amb, 3 is the front cover plate forming a portion of the inner face of the amb; 4; is the battle portion of the inner jamb face and 5 is a member which forms a portion of the inner jamb face and is then bent around to form a partition within the j amb; 6 is the weight for the lower sash 7, and 8 is the weight for the upper sash 9. The usual chain 10 is connected to the sash 9 and a corresponding chain 11 is connected with sash 7. These chains run over the usual pulleys which are not shown in the drawings, as their construction and location is well known. Attached to the plate 3 is a weight separator 12, which as shown in Fig. 3 does not come all the way to the top of the j amb. Near the top of the plate 3 is an opening 13 adjacent to which i is located a fusible link 14 of the usual construction. The lower half of the link '14 is attached to closing weight 17 which under normal conditions hangs at the top of the jamb between the weight 8 and the separator 12. 1 At its rear, weight 17 has arms 18 and 19 which may be made integral with each other, but separable from the rest of weight 17, and which overlie weights 8 and 6 respectively. Chain 10 is attached directly to weight 8 in the usual manner, but interposed between chain 11 and weight 6 is the trip 20. 4
The trip 20 has near the bottom a hook 21, the upper surface of which is made diagonal. The hook 21 is adapted to receive a loop 22 which is connected to weight 6 by means of a bent wire 23. The manner in which this connection is made is clearly shown in Figs. 4 and.5. The pitch of the upper surface of hook 21 is such that loop 22 will slide off of this hook unless it is held on. Normally, loop 22 is held on hook 21 by a plunger 24 which is held down into a recess formed in arm 21 by the action of a spring 25. Extending from the sides of plunger 2st is a pin 26 which engages the slotted end of a trigger arm 27. Trigger arm 27 is preferably provided on its upper surface with a lug 28 so that contact with this arm will be at the outer end and will give the maximum effect.
I11 the event of a fire the solder which forms part of the link 14 will fuse and permit the two halves to separate; thereupon the weight 17 will drop; arm 18 will strike weight 8 and the combination of weights 8 and 17 will be sufficient to raise the upper sash 9. As the weight 17 drops, arm 19 will strike lug 28 of arm 27, thereby raising plunger 24 which will permit loop 22 to slip from arm 21, thus releasing weight 6 from .r
the lower sash 7, which will drop of its own weight.
It may be noted that by this arrangement a supplemental weight is used, but such supplemental weight is under all normal conditions held immovable by the fusible link in a position where it is out of the way and will permit full movement of the window. It is also to be noted that by this arrangement the fusible link is not subject to any jerks, but is subject only to the static strain exerted on it by the stationary weight 17.
