Be it known that I, OswALnDUDA, a cit;- zenof the United States, vand resident of Houston, in the co'unty of Harms, 1n the State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Deep-Well- Drilling Apparatus, of which the following is a specificatwn.
The invention relates to deep well drilling apparatus and particularly to means for pumping lubricant tothe cutters thereof. The 'pump is embodied in the apparatusitself and derives its power from the motion of the apparatus in the wall.
The invention consists in the features and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in thc claims.l
In the drawings- F ig. 1 is a central, vertical sectional view of the apparatus, it being noted, however, that the section through the cutters is taken upon'two planes at 90 apart in relation to each other-,so that one of the inclined rotary cutters appears and also one-half of the cross roller cutter is shown.

In these drawings- 1 indicates the drill stem; 2, one of the inclined side cutters; 3, a portion of the cross roller cutter; 4 a lubricant holder in the form ol' an elongated tube arranged eoaxially with the drill stem and seated by its screw threaded lower end upon a socket member 5 which in turn is seated in the upperftnd of the reamer block 6 which carries reamer cutters?. rThe flushing fluid 'forced down through the drill stem passes along the annular space 8 between the drill stein and the lubricant holder 4, and thence through ports E) and a central passage 10 of the socket member and through the central channel 1l of the reamer block. from whence it passes through passage-s 12 in the. drill head to the cutters to flush the same, as is well known yto these skilled in the art.
The socket member 5 is provided with passages, one et' which is indicated in dotted lilies at 1?, tor conducting the lubricant from the holder It by way of tlh` annular passage 14 to suitable conduits that )cad the lubricant to the parts to be lubricated, such for instance, as the passage 15 which directs the lubricant to a central chamber 16 .from whence it is distributed through passages such as 17 to the bearings of the cutters. For forcing the piston 19' downwardly, a. portion of the flushing fluid is forced into the top of the lubricant holder above the l piston 19 and in order to accomplish this result a pumping arrangement is employed which includes apiston 20, a. cylinder 21 within which the piston reciprocates coaxially of the lubricant holden The cylinder 2l is carried by a block 22 which is screw threaded into the upper end of the lul bricant holder'4. This block or partition member has a screw threaded seat at 23 receiving the shell of a chamber 24 which is arranged as a coaxial extension of the lu` bricant holder, the said chamber being closed at its upper end by a cap Amember 25 screw threaded into connection therewith. At 26 there is an inlet for flushing fluid to the chamber 24, this inlet being protected by a screen 27 of any suitable form held in place by a screw threaded ring 28. The flushing water passes to the chamber 24 through a port 29 after passing through the screen.
The piston 2O is connected with a rod 30 the upper end of which is reduced and is slidably guided at nl in the cap member 25. On this rod a weight 32 is mounted to have slight longitudinal movement in relation to the rod and the rod is provided with a flange 33 at or near its lower end, and a nut 34 at its upper portion between which and the collar the weight 32 is arranged, it being noted, as above stated, that the weight is loosely mounted on the stem and can have slight longitudinal movement between the nut 3:1- and the collar 33. At each end of this weight a spiral spring is arranged as shown at 35, each of these springs bearing at one end upon the weight and at its opposite end upon the adjacent stationary structure such as the block 22 and the cap member 25. The weight is of somewhat smaller diameter .than the interior diameter of the chamber 24 and it is of less length than the said chamber so that room is provided for longitudinal movement of the stem or rod together with the weight, in relation to the chamber containing these part-s.
The piston 2() is provided with an inlet port'36, extending mainly coaxially of Athe piston and having a lateral branch at its upper end so that this piston will act in the` nature of au inlet valve whereby when the piston is raised so that the mouth 36 of the port 36 is above. the upper surface of the block 22, then the flushing liluid vwill pass lfrom the chai'uber 2li into the cylinder 2l, whereas when. the piston is lowered, as shown in Fig. 2, the inlet ofthefiushing fluid will be cut oil' from the. cylinder 2i.
The cylinder )'u'oviiiled with a discharge valve and as an example of this a valve 87 is shown adapted to be seated at 37 against the block 22 and this valve' is pressed upwardly to closed position against this seat by a spring 23S, the lower end of which rests upon a screw plug 39 seated in the. block 22. The discharge valve is guided in the block, but 'it controls the discl-iargc port leading from the cylinder 2l.

In the operation otthe apparatus the drill stem derives a vertical ribratory movement due to the roller cutter at the lower end thereof running over the. uneven surfaces being cut, or when ruiming over smoother surfaces the vibratory action of the drill stem will be d uc to the formation of the cutters which are provided with teeth ontheir peripheries supposingl the parts to be in the position of Fig. 2 and with the drill stem vibrating vertically and supposing the drill stem is et the uppeiI endv of its vibratory stroke, the 'discharge valve will be closed and the combined pump iston and inlet valve 20 also will be closed. hen the upper limit of this vibratory stroke of the apparatus is reached and the downward strol-'e begins` the weight 32 will not respond immediately to this change in direction of the stroke, diie to its inertia or momentum,
. and hence it will assume a position relative to the. drill stem in which it will hc raised so as to uncover the port 36', and thiswill allow the water to tlow'into the, pump cylinder from the chamber 24. it being noted that the relative up stroke of the piston 20 while the discharge valve is closed'` creates a vacuum under the piston 2O in the chamber 21. Now when the movement reverses, that is by the drill stem rising, the weight with its piston will again lag in respect to the movement of the stem, thus assuming a lowered the piston 20 to force the Waterfrom the cylinder 21 past the spring pressed discharge valve 37 which will open durin;f this pumping stroke of the. piston 20 and the weight 32,
and thus the water will be forced from the the source from which the water is derivedto be forced by the pump into the upper end ofthe lubricant, holder and it will be understood that the above specification anddrawings are presented in an illustrative way and are not to be considered as restrictive upon the scope of the invention, which is defined by the appended claims. The springs at' opposite ends of the weight cushion 'the stroke of this weight and also aid in moving the weight in opposite directions, for instance, when the weight moves upwardly relative to the drill stern the upper spring is compressed and reacts at the proper time 'to force the weight with its rod and piston downwardly and the saine is true when the downward movement of the weight takes place, namely, it compresses the lower spring and upon reversal of the. action this spring aids 'in throwing the weight upwardly.
As before stated, the weight has some slight movement freely on the rod 30 so that in its action in either direction it will.
