- To allah/:m itumay concern.'
B e it known that I, MARTIN EITHOLIAS, a citizen Of the United States, residing at State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drills, of which the following is a specification.
This invent ion relates to improvements in drills of' the well boring type 'and has for its object to provide an. improved guide sleeve carried by the drill rod adjacent the drill head which is` of" such diameter as to approximately fit the bore and, being engaged with the wall thereof, prevents vibratory movement of the drill incident to variations vin the 'quality orA character'of the earth or rock and the consequent possible impairment in efiiciency of operation of the'boring tool. Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth,
a drill for well boring and which is Simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, thoroughly ellicient in its use, readily assembled, Vandcomparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the' invention consists ofthe novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter' more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanyiup'l drawings,' wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can'be resorted to which come within the 'scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 represents a side. elevation of lhc improved drill, partly in longitudinal section, and
lf'igure 2 represents a transverse sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.-
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates'the usual .hollow tubular drill rod having one extremity thereof for engagement with the threaded coupling ring 6,the bore of which is threaded throughout a portion of its -length to lit the threaded terminal of the rod4 5 and is gradually restricted inwardly from itsopposite 4end to provide tapered .an Athe axes of the disks are preferably ,portion 7. The internal reduction'of the o5 coupling ring provides an internal annular shoulder constituting an abutment for the terminal o f the rod 5. The tapered portion Aof the bore` of the ringreceives the corre-.
spondingly tapered and externally threaded- 6o terminal of the drill head 8, the o posite extremity of whiclris enlarged as ing at 9 -and supports a plurality of cuttingv disks 10 rotatably supported upon bolts 11 icated threaded in the relatively .large terminal o f the head 8. .Y
Three cutting disks 10. are preferably pro-I vided and are arranged at intervals of 120 de rees to provide foruniformity of-spacingx disposed in upwardly converging relation whereby to secure maximum 'cutting or drilling efiiciency thereof.
A stop collar 12 .is formed integral or otherwise rigidly se'cured to the tubular drill i5 rod 5 above thecoupling ring 6 and oo aets,A
therewith'. toV confinethe' guide sleeve 14 which is also of tubular form and is -r ranged in coneentrically spaced relation to the rod 5 being supported in position by S0 groups' of radially disposed spacing .elements engaged with the outer surface of the rod-5 and eli'ectively confined between the coupling 6 and the collar 12 toprevent longitudinal displacement ot' the sleeve 1'4. 85
Each of the spacing elements consists of a stem 13 having its outer end formetl integral with the inner face of a curved outer head plate 13', and its inner end formed integral with the outer face of a curved inner head plate 1 3". The head plates are arranged eoncentrically with respect to each other and the stem is positioned centrally with respect to cach plate. Each oi" the plates is of a length and width materially greater than the diameterof the stem. The plate 13 abuts against und is secured to the inner face ol.' the 'sleeve 14,-and the plate 13" externa surface ofthe sleeveQuin-dfA the well-- of the bore effectively rpreventesueheX-' cessve vibrgit'ory movement of the'drill head peeially )when boring through such 'ela'tiv'ely,
