GUsrAv YOUNG- QUIST, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at the city of New York, in the State of New York, one of the United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manually-Operated Means for Dispensing Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in manually operated means for dispensing mechanism, and the obj ects of the invention are to maintain uniformity in the flow of liquidor other material being dispensed, independently of any variations in movement or pressure of the hand of the operator.
In liquidv dispensers, where the syrup or flavoring material is to be mixed with water or other diluting liquid, it is desirable that during the mixing operation the syrup or flavoring material should be fed uniformly and independently of any fluctuation in the pressure or movement of the hand of the operator, and unless this is done, it is difiicult to obtain a correct mixture. In the case of beverages, which are made by dispensing in this way, it is desirable that the beverage should be of a uniform quality from the top to the bottom of the glass and this result could not be obtained unless'uniform quanti ties of flavoring material and water and the lilre'are dispensed while the glass is being filled.
Further objects of the invention are to prevent excessive hand pressure being exerted on the dispensing. mechanism and in the case of the liquid dispenser to avoid splashing of the liquid the container to which it is dispensed. The invention is particularly useful in connection with the liq uid dispenser invented by Alexander E. Ernst and described in application filed April 11th, 1921, under Serial No. 4602411.
The invention consists essentially of the improved construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described in detail in the accompanying specification and drawings.

Referring to the drawings:
A indicates the operating member, which is preferably pivotally mounted as on a bracket 10, which itself is suitably mounted on a base or frame B, the operating member being connected to a connecting rod or member ll which is operatively connected to the dispenser mechanism. In the embodiment illustrated a portion of the cylinder C isshown. 1) indicates a manually movable controlling member conveniently in the form of a handle, also pivoted to the bracket 10 and as shown having abifurcated end 12 which receives the pivot pin 13.
The connection between the connecting rod 11 and the operating member A is conveniently constituted by a pivot pin 14 which projects laterally on opposite sides and has tension springs 15 extending from extremity to a suitable anchor 16 on the frame 17 which is secured to the base B, these springs constituting means by which energy may be stored in the operating memher during the upward movement of the handle I). Inaddition to these means of storing energy, it may be observed that the weight of the operating member itself also serves as a means of storing energy.
The connection between the controlling member I) and the operating member A is of a releasable character and constituted in the embodiment illustrated by a pivoted latch 19 mounted on the side of the member D and having a hook shaped end 20' designed to engage a projecting end of the pin 14, the latch being normally held in engaged position by means of a spring 21 which extends from the latch to a pin 22 on the member D. The end of the latch is further formed with a bevelled portion 23 which enables it to slip over the end of the pin as hereinafter explained. The movement of the latch is further limited by a stop pin 24 on the member D which abuts the side of the latch on the side remote to the pin 22. The exact lowermost position of the operating member may be conveniently adjusted by a stop bolt 25 which extends through the baseB and is held in adjusted position by a nut 26. The operating member may also conveniently carry a cam 27 from and by which various parts of the dispensing mechanism not shown may be operated.
The latch 19 is designed to be disengaged from the pin 14 at the end of the upward stroke by a tappet member 28 in the form of a bolt adjustably supported in a plate 29 which is itself supported by brackets 30 suitably connected to the base plate B as by screws 31. The tappet or tripping screw 28 is designed to engage the inclined projection 32 of the latch 19 as indicated in Figure 9 and move the hook shaped end 20 out of engagement with the pin 14.
Looking means are provided by which the controlling handle is held temporarily during the downward movement of the operating member to prevent any interference with the operating member by improper or unregulated downward movement of the controlling handle. These means include a longitudinal slidable locking latch 33 slidably mounted in an aperture 34 in one of the brackets 30 and designed at its inner end to engage a pin 36 on the controlling handle D, the pin being adapted to slide over a bevel face 37 on the end of the latch, the latch being held normally in its engaging position by suitable means such as a flat spring 38 secured to the bracket 30 and bearing against the outer end of the latch, the latch conveniently having a reduced portion or pin 40 which extends through the spring.
In order to free the locking latch after the operating member is moved a determined amount, a pivoted releasing lever 41 is provided pivoted to the under side of the plate 29 extending through anaperture 42 in the locking latch 33 and being provided with a laterally turned and inclined end 43 designed to be engaged by a bevel projection 44 carried by the operating member A. (See Figure 7.)
In operation, the handle or manual controlling member D is lifted up which by reason of the engagement of the latch 19 with the pin 14 will also lift the operating member A raising the connecting rod 11 and through it setting the dispensing mechanism. In case the dispensing mechanism is a piston and cylinder, this movement will raise the piston and send the liquid to be dispensed into the cylinder. At the same time, the springs 15 are distended. When the projecting end 32 of the latch 19 comes in engagement with the tappet screw 28 the latches 33 are released permitting the operating member to return under action of the spring 15. Before this takes place, however, the pin 36 on the controlling member D will have passed the bevelled end 37 of the looking latch 33 and will be retained by the locking latch which will prevent the controlling member moving downwardly with the operating member A and will thus per mit the operating member to move uniformly under the action of its own wei ht and the springs 15. When the operating member is moved a determined distance the releasing lever 41 will be engaged by the bevel projection 44 and move the latch 33 to releasing position as indicated in Figure 8 whereupon the controlling member I) will return to its normal position by its own weight. It is obvious t rat the movement of both the controlling and operating member may be operatively connected through parts of the dispensing mechanism and I have shown apertures 45 and 46 for this purpose.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many widely different embodiments of my invention within the scope of the claims, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
lVhat I claim as my invention is:
1. In a dispenser an operating member, a manual movable controlling member, means connecting the operating and the controlling member during a portion only of the movementof the controlling member whereby the operating member may complete its operation independently of the controlling member.
2. In a dispenser a reciprocable operating member adapted to return automatically to normal position, a manual movable controlling member, means connecting the operating and the controlling member during a portion only of the movement of the controlling member whereby the operating member may complete its operation independently of the controlling member.
3. In a dispenser an operating member, a manual movable controlling member, means connecting the operating and the controlling member during a portion only of the movement of the controlling member whereby the operating member may complete its operation independently of the controlling member, and means for locking the controlling member until the operating member has moved a determined amount.
4. In a dispenser an operating member, amanual movable controlling member, means connecting the operating and the controlling member during a portion only of the movement of the controlling member whereby the operating member may complete its operation independently of the controlling member, and means for storing energy in the operating member during the period when it moves with the controlling member.
5. In a dispenser, a spring actuated op erating member a manual movable controlling member, means connecting the operating and the controlling member during a portion only of the movement of the controlling member whereby the operating member may complete its operation independently of the controlling member.
6. In a dispenser an operating member having an up and down movement, a manual movable controlling member having an up and down movement, means connecting the operating and the controlling member during a portion only of the movement of the controlling member whereby the operating member may complete its operation inclependently oi the controlling member.
7. In a dispenser, an operating member, a manual movable controlling member, a latch device connecting the operating memher, a controlling member, means for re leasing the latch device during a portion of the movement of the said members to permit the operating member to complete a portion ot its operation independently of the controlling member.
8. In a dispenser, an operating member, a manual movable controlling member, a latch device connecting the operating memher, a controlling member, means for releasing the latch device during a portion of the movement of the said members to permit the operating member to complete a portion of its operation independently of the controlling member, and a releasable looking device adapted to temporarily restrain movement of the controlling member and being releasable by movement of the operating member. 1
9. In a dispenser, an operating member having an up and down movement, a manual movable controlling member also having an up and down movement, a latch device adapted to connect the two members during their upward movement only, means for temporarily locking the controlling member at the end of its upward movement, said means being releasable by movement of the controlling member.
10. In a dispenser, a pivoted operating member and a manual movable controllingmember, a pivoted latch on one of the said members engaging the other of the said members, means for releasing the latch on the downward movement of the operating member. i 11. In a dispenser, a pivoted operating member and a manual movable controlling member, a pivoted latch on one of the said members engaging the other of the said members, means for releasing the latch on the downward movement of the operating member, and a second locking latch designed to temporarily prevent downward movement of the controlling member until the operating member has moved a given amount.

In a dispenser a pivoted operating member, a spring operatively connected thereto, a pivoted controlling member adapted to spring about the same axis as the operating member, a pivoted latch device connecting the two members, means for releasing the latch device at the top of the upward stroke, and a locking latch designed to prevent downward movement of the controlling member until the operating member has moved a determined amount, said looking latch comprising spring actuated slidable latch and a pivoted tripping lever'connected'to the latch and designed to be engaged by the operating member.
17. In a dispenser manual operated-pres- 7 sure dispensing means, a reciprocable handle, spring actuated operating means associated with the handle in one direction of its movement and operating independently thereof in the-opposite direction.
18. In a dispenser a manual operated pressure dispensing mechanism an operating member connected to the dispensing mechanism, a manually operable controlling member movable with the aforesaid operating member for the first part of its stroke only and means for uniformly completing the balance of the stroke of the operating member independently of the controlling member.
