Description

Dec'. 2, 1924. 1,517,751 1 P. J. PURDY BOTTLE LABELING MACHINE Filed Aug. 9, 1922 Patented Dec. 2, 1924.
IPERCIVAL JOHN PURDY, 0F LONDON, ENGLAND.
BOTTLE-LABELING MACHINE.
Application filed August 9, 1922. Serial No. 580,679.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, PERCIVAL Jol-IN PURDY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in London, England, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Bottle-Labeling Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bottle labeling machines and refers to machines of the type in which a vertically reciprocating picker is employed having surfaces to which gum is applied whereby a label may be removed from a magazine and brought into position for application to a bottle.
A vertically swinging arm is provided whereby the label is applied to and held on the bottle whilst the picker is withdrawn the application of the label being finally completed by vertically reciprocating wipers which engage said label and press it down onto the bottle.
The present invention has for its object to provide means which may be readily applied to existing machines whereby the back or inner surface of the label may have indicated upon it the date of labeling or any other particulars.
Printing mechanism according to this invention consists essentially of an arm or lever carrying the type said arm being so mounted and operated as to enable it to swing from a position clear of the picker and other parts forelfecting the labeling operation into a position such that the type are caused to print upon the inner surface of the label. An inking device is provided for the type preferably so arranged that the type contacts therewith as the arm or lever moves into position to print upon the label.
According to one form of the invention there is provided upon some non-moving y portion of the machine, conveniently upon the support for the label holder, an inking device. The device just referred to may comprise a hollow roller designed tocontain ink and having perforations through which the said ink may pass to an outer cover of some suitable material.
The type is carried by a horizontally swinging arm which in one of its terminal positions contacts with the under-surface of the label in the label holder. Preferably the type, which is in intaglio, or the holder therefor, is so mounted upon the said arm as to enable it to be adjusted longitudinally thereof.
lhe arm just referred to isv supported by two vertically disposed links connected at their lower ends respectively to the outer end of the arm and at a suitable point in the length of the said arm the said links at their upper ends being pivotally supported by means of a bracket secured to some suitable portion of the machine. The second or inner link is so constructed or supported at its upper end as to permit it at a certain point in its movement to move yertically upwards more or less in a straight ine.v
Secured to or operated by means of some vertically reciprocating element of the machine is a vertically disposed rod supported in suitable guides and having adjutably secured to it a collar supporting);` a roller. Secured to the second or inner link of the type carrying arm is a cam face or surface of such contour that the upward and downward movement of the rod will cause the said type carrying arm to move to and fro in the horizontal plane. rlhe roller is caused to contact with the aforesaid cam surface by spring pressure acting to cause the said surface to bear against the roller. l The upper end of the cam surface is provided with a projection with which the roller contacts towards the end of its upward movement causing the end of the type carrying arm to move upwards and the type to impress the label.
In order that the invention may be the better understood drawings are appended in which Fig. l is a perspective view showing the invention applied to a known type of machine,
Fig. 2 is a similar view with certain parts broken away to show the operating mechanism for the printing attachment,
Fie'. 3 is a alan of the tvae Carr ino' lever i o .i l z: 7
Fig. l is a side view to a larger scale illustrating certain details,
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of the inking roller.
ldeferring to the accompanying drawings in which only such parts of the machine areI identified as are necessary for the proper understanding of the invention, l indicates the main shaft of the machine, 2 the vertically reciprocating pickers having gum carrying surfaces whereby when raised into contact with the underside of the lowest label in the magazine B'the said label adheres thereto and is drawn downwards ready for application to the bottle 4L to which it is applied and upon which it is held by the arm 5 whilst the pickers are withdrawn and thei'labelingoperations are completed by the'vertically reciprocating wipers 6.
lSecured in any 4suitable manner to the frame of the label carrier, or supported therefrom in any suitable manner such as to permit of its` horizontal and vertical adjustinent, is a bracket 7 having slotted arms in which are mounted, in a manner such that they are freely slidable therein, the journals 0f an inking cylinder or roller S.
The,downward movement of the roller is limitedby the pins ai, Fig. 5, passing transverselyof `the slots and one or both of which is or are removable so that the roller may be readily removed and replaced for filling Iwith i ink or other purposes.
rIphe cylinder of the roller is provided with an-outer permeable cover 9 and is designed tol contain ink for which purpose one of the ends thereof is removable. The cylinderis perforated to permit the passage of the ink :to the outer cover 9.
Pivotallymounted at w to a bracket 1GEl secured `to the main frame of the machine is azlink 10 the lower end of which is secured to anarm. 11 tothe outer end of which is secured a type box 12, Fig. 3, carrying the type-which isl in intaglio. Preferably the type b oX or. carrier is so mounted upon the arm as.v to permit of its adjustment lengthwise of said arm.
Pivotally mounted upon the bracket 10L is asecondilink 13 slotted as shown for the passage of its pivot whereby, as will be presently more fully explained, the link has a 'limited longitudinal movement in addition to its swinging movement. A spring 111 is `providedthe tendency of which is to oppose the upward movement of the link. The lower end of link'13 is also pivotally connectedvto the aforesaid arm 11.
A vertically disposed rod 14e* has on its upper end a guide 15, the lower end of the rod passing through the horizontal member 16.of the machine and being connected to the vertically reciprocating wiper slide 17 supported bythe rod 18 indicated by dotted linesin Fig. 2.
The rod 14X has secured to it a collar 18 carrying a roller 19 engaging a cam surface 19gt of the link 13a whereby as the rod moves upwards., the link 13 is caused to swing for ward and the type to pass over the inking roller which roller7 as previously explained, is so mounted that it is free to rise and fall vertically in its support whereby it may yield to the pressure of the type at the same time being caused to apply the ink thereto.
lVhen, however, the rod is approaching its limit of upward motion the roller 19 contacts with the upper end of the cam surface whereby the arm 1.1 has imparted to it a direct upward movement causing the type to print. upon the label. The return of the arm is assisted by lthe spring 1/1 before referred to.
