J. E. CLEVELAND MATTRESS Filed Oct. l,
Patented Dec. 2, 1924.
1,517,611 PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH E. CLEVELAND, OF COLUMBUS,-GEORGIA.
MATTRESS.
Application led October 1, 1923. Serial No. 665,906.
'/'o all lwiz-0m it may concern lie it known that I. JOSEPH E. CLEVELAND, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Muskogee and State of Georgia, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattresses and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable'othe'rs skilled in the art to which it appertains to make vand use the same.
The principal object of my invention is I to provide a mattress which is quickly `and easily convertible into one of ventilated na ture, or one of non-ventilated type.
Another aim is to provide a mattress of suc-h construction that movements of a person lying upon the same, will create a circulation of air through the ventilatingopenings, to cool the bed.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing.
F igurc 1 is a plan view of a mattress constructed in accordance with my invention.
nFigure 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view as indicated bv line 2-2 of Fig. 1, the
plugs for closing `the Ventilating openings being shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Figure 3 is a view similar -to Fig. 2 but showing the mattress with the plugs removed.
Figures 4 and 5 are side elevations looking in different directions at one of the plugs. l'
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional view on line 6- -6 of Fig. 5.
Figure 7 is a horizontal section on line 7-7 of Fig. (i.
ln the construction of the improved mattress. l make use of top and bottom sheets l and 2 of ticking or other desired material, said sheets being stitched or otherwise secured at their edges to an edge wall 3 which may be formed of the samematerial. Al suitably spaced points throughout their areas, the top and bottom sheets l and 2 are formed with vertically alined openings, and Ventilating tubes 4 formed of ticking or other suitable flexible material have their en ds 5 stitched or otherwisevsecured to the edge walls of said openings, the tubes being of less, length than the thickness of the mattress stuffing 6, so thatl substantially concave form is imparted to the top and bottom of the mattress aroung each tube .,end, as indicatedby thevnumerals 7. This formation causes any movements of a person upon the mattress to cause circulation of air through the Ventilating tubes 4, thus keeping the bed cool and comfortable in hot weather. I make provision however, whereF by the tubes 4 may be closed in cold weather, or if this should otherwise be desirable..
In the present showing, l have provided a plurality of plugs 8 adapted to be frictionally inserted in the sleeves 4 to prevent the passage of air through said sleeves. These plugs are substantially co-extensive in length with the sleeves, and each plug preferably consists of a flexible sack 9 closed about a suitable packing 10 and provided with a strap or other handle 11, by means oi?,l which it may be removed when desired. The sacks 9 may well be formed of ticking and the stuiiing 10 of raw cotton, which is also preferably used for the stuiing 6. This is not absolutely essential however, as other adequate stuffngs could be used.
A mattress constructed as, or substantially as shown and described, will be very desirable both in hot and cold weather, may be kept in a fluffy comfortable condition, by compressing it edgewise, bothtransversely and longitudinally, and will bepractically vermin-proof, as no tufts or the like exist in which the vermin may breed and accumulate. Attention may also be'directed .to the fact that the mattress may be used with either of its sides disposed upwardly and the plugs 8 may be inserted downwardly into the tubes 4, whether the sheet 1 or the sheet 2, be uppermost. Attention may be further invited to the fact that the tubes in question, being of less vertical length than the thickness of the mattress, draw the latter into concave sha eat the 'ends of said tubes, so that both si es of the mattress have a plurality of convex'portions, such as those ordinarily produced on mattresses'by tuftgiis excellent results may be obtained from the details disclosed, they may be followed if desired, but within the -scope of the invention as claimed, numerous minor changes may be made.
I claim:
A mattress having .ai ficxible top and bottom provided with vcrticallyfalined oienings, a stuiing between said top and iot- 10 lower end Walls, :t yieldable packing coninedby 'said Walls, and a looped handle YSecured to the upper end Wall, said plugs being of substantlally the same length as said tubes and being of a diameter to be frictionully held therein against accidental removal.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto ufixed my signature.
JOSEPH E. CLEVELAND.
