Description

Dec. 2, 1924- 1,517,571
M. F. MAYER LIFEBOAT Filed Dec. l0. 1923 Patented 2,
MARTIN FRANZ MAYER, OF SEATTLE, llSHNGTON.
LFEBOAT.
Application led December l0, 1923. Seriali No. 679,855.
T0 all I207mm z' 97mg/ concern.'
Be it known that I, MARTIN FRANZ Maren, a citizen o't the United States ot Americay residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State ci `Washingtom have invented oei tain new and useful improvements in Liteboatsr oiI which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to improvements in life boats involvin T the use of a single keelson and the disposition of the floor 'trames of such height and in such relation to the keelson as to provide compartments for storing water and food containers, or the loose equipment oit the life boat.
The invention further provides the sides ot the boat of such construction as to provide for the convenient housing of air tanks or other buoyant material containers.
The invention also provides the use of thwarts, which are removably secured in a manner to insure against the spreading of the sides of the boat and to include a substantial stanchion support for the thwarts as required in boats ot this type.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a broken view in vertical longitudinal section of the improved boat.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof illustrating particularly the mounting for the thwarts.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the means designed in connection with the improved lite boat to permit nesting of the boats.
The improved liie boat which aside from the details hereinafter referred to, may be constructed in any usual or preferred manner, includes a lreelson l, extending longit-udinally and centrally of the boat to the re-l spective ends thereof, with which keelson is connected the appropriate member of transversely arranged iioor tinlbers 2, to which latter may be secured the bottom 3 and floor 4; of the boat. The floor timbers extend transversely relative to the keelson' and are oiil suliicient height or depth to provide a series of spaces 5, between the keelson, licor timbers, bottom, and floor of the boat, to receive containers as 6 for the storage of food, water and the like, which spaces are also adapted to receive any appropriate loose equipment for the life boat.y
The sides of the boat have the usual rib timbers 7 secured to the loor timbers by metallic knees 8, on the outer side of which ribs are arranged the usual side walls 9, and on the inner side in spaced relation the usual battens l0, the latter being in spaced relation as indicated. The ribs are ot sufficient dimension transverse the boat to provide in thc side walls between the ribs a series of compartments or spaces 1L in which may be placed air containers, indicated at l2. or containers with cork or other buoyant material. whereby to provide for maintaining the buoyancy of the boat when in use.
Secured on the appropriate batten on each side of the boat are thwarts 18, these latter being removably held in connection with the particular battens by dowel pins 14h which may be conveniently 'forced into position or removed therefrom at will. The thwarts are Jfurther secured in position by substantial rods l5, having a hinge or swivel connection with the underside oi: the thwarts adjacent the respective ends thereof, with the free or lower ends of the rods formed as hooks 16, to engage in eyes l? secured to the side of the boat. As the thwart-s are more or less permanently secured in place by the dowel pins. it is apparent that the sides of the boat will not spread. and hence the rods 15 may be of such length as to tightly engagethe eyes l?.v whereby the rods act in eii'ect as stanchion supports for the thwarts, as is required in thisJ type oi boat.
ln order to provide a sutlicient number of lite boats to accommodate the maximum number ot passengers ot a vessel without re quiring excess space for the storage of such life boats, it is necessary that the life boats should be nested. and to secure this result a supporting thwart 1S is provided in the boat below and preferably between the main thwarts, the supporting thwart being removably secured in position by dowel pins 19 engaging blocks 2O secured. between or. to the appropriate battens. rlhese supporting thwarts are in such position as to permit one life boat to be nested and supported in another in a manner to permit their convenient separation when required for use. Obviously in the nesting of the life boatsi the main thwarts will be removed, being conveniently replaced when the life boats are to be used, as will be evident.
Claims:
l. A life boat havingthe main thwarts secured to the walls or the boat by removable dowel pins, rods extending from said thwarts to the sides of the boat; and removably eoliueeted to such eides, the connection of the rods between the thwarts und boei; providing e substantially rigid Structure to Seive ne stanehion suppoi'ts for the thwai'ts, and n Supporting' thwart removably secured to the sides of the boat below the main thwai'ts and arranged at such height above the bottom of the boat as to receive and support the bot- 10 tom of a nesting boat..
www1
life boat having main 'tliwiirte re movably secured ro the Walls of the boat, anal ai supporting thwart removably secured to the sides of the boei; below the mein thWJirt-e said supporting` thwai'ts being` arranged at, .-1
such height above the bottom of the boat as to receive and suppot the bottom of' a nesting` boat.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature.
MARTIN FRANZ MAYER.
