Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BOND, a citizen 'of the United States, residing at Sarasota, in the county of Sarasota and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handpieces for Dental Drills, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dental drills, and more particularly to improvements in the hand pieces of dental engines.
Tn the usual construction of dental engines, they are provided with hand pieces surrounding the drill shaft and adapted to be grasped by the operator when using the drill.
An object of the present invention is to provide a two-part hand piece, one of which is formed as a sheath arranged over the other and adapted to be'` removed for sterilizing.
More specifically, of an inner sleeve surrounding the drill shaft and adapted to serve as a cover to hold the oil or other lubricant used on the shaft, and an outer sleeve or sheath adapted to be grasped by the operator of the drill. This outer sleeve is readily removable and is adapted to be removed at intervals for the purpose of sterilizing it: u type of one part hand piece 1s employed, it is ineXpedient to remove it for sterilizmg, as it also serves as a retainer for the oil or other lubricant on the shaft and its removal is, for this reason, inconvenient. v

Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates a supporting bracket of the usual construction on which the drill is mounted. This bracket is provided with a circular portion 2, one end of which is eX- ternally screw-threaded, as at 3. Arhollow drill shaft l is supported in a bearing 5, carried by the bracket and the shaft passes through the bracket and is provided with a the invention consistsV When the usual pulley 6 for the reception of a cable to ro tate the shaft. The drill is provided with the usual chuck 7 to receive a drill bit and this chuck is controlled by means of a rod` 8, passing through the shaft to the rear end and having an operating handle 9 arranged thereon.
The device forming the subject matter of the present invention consists of a hand Vpiece formed of an inner section 10 and an outer section 11. As shown, the inner section surrounds the drill shaft and serves as a container therefor. The bore of the inner section is provided with a slightly enlarged portion adjacent the rear end, forming a shoulder for the reception of the bearing 5 and is further provided with a flange 12, at its inner end adapted to abut the circular portion 2 of the supporting bracket. Adjacent the rear end, it is further provided with a raised portion 13, adapted to receive and support a spring `member .14. The spring member is provided with a slight oil'- set 15, intermediate its ends. The rear end of the spring is secured tothe inner sleeve by suitable fastening elements 16. A locking member 17, formed of metal or other suitable material, is secured to the spring member adjacent its forward end and this member is provided with a tooth 18. The rear end of the locking member is slightly spaced from the spring and, as shown, is provided with an elongated slot 19, through which access may be had to the fastening element 16. The inner sleeve is adapted to be secured over the drill shaft by means of a nut 20, havingthreads adapted to engage the threads 3 ou the circular portion of the bracket. As shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, this nut contacts with the flange 12 on the rear of the sleeve. The nut is provided with a longitudinal slot 21 (sec Figure l) to permit it to be passed over the v raised portion 13 of the sleeve.
The outer sleeve forms a sheath adapted to lit over tne inner sleeve and is removably secured thereto by means of the tooth 1S. As shown, the outer sleeve :is provided with a depression 22 in which the tooth is adapted to be received. It is also provided with a longitudinal slot 23, extending from the rear to permit the outer sleeve to pass over the raised portion 13. The forward end of the outer sleeve extends beyond the forward end of the inner sleeve and is tapered, as at lili) lli) rI his` forms Va support for the bur or drill Y and also'` preventssaliva from .collecting on the forward end of the inner sleeve.
The operation of the device will befapparent from the foregoing description. fIt is assembled by first placing the inner sleeve in position, then placing the [nut 20'on the sleeve and then securing the retaining mem` ber17 to the inner sleeve by inserting the fasteningelements in the spring 14. The inner sleeve is placed in position by placing the slot in alinement iwith the raised portion .13 and sliding it over the inner sleeve until thetooth'lY entersthenotch 22. YVhen Y the outer sleeve is to be removed, the rear endioi'ithe `locking member 1T is depressed, raising the tooth 18 .from the notch 22 and permitting thel outer sleeve to be removed. This outer sleeve may lbe removed at any time for the purpose of sterilizing it, and the inner sleeve serves as a cover or retainerriior the `drill shaft When the outer sleeve has been removed.

2. .In a dental engine, a hand piece comprising' an inner sleeve, means for securing said sleeve in position, a sheath surrounding said sleeve, said sheath being provided with being further provided vvith a notch spaced from said slot, and a resilient locking member arranged on the exterior of said sleeve, said looking member being adapted to enter said slot and 'being provided with a tooth adapted to be received in said notch.
3. VIn a'dental engine, a hand piece con prising an inner sleeve, means for securing said sleeve in position, a sheath surrounding said sleeve, a resilient catelrcarried by said inner sleeve and adapted to engage said sheath to .detachably secure vit in `position against longitudinal movement, and means for :preventing rotation thereof.
4. In a dental engine, a hand piece comprising an inner sleeve, means for securingsaid sleeve in position, said sleeve being provided with a longitudinal raised portion, a sheath surrounding said sleeve and `provided With a longitudinal slot to receive said raised portion, said sheath being iii'urther provided with a notch in alinement with said slot, and a locking member carried portion and adapted to-enter said notch.
