Be it known that I. CHARLES E. MALLonY,
a citizen of the United States. residing at Waupun, in the county of Dodge and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stain-ping Means, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to stamping means.
More particularly the present invention relates to structure for applying marks in succession to a large number of articles and is illustrated in connection with machinery for filling cans. It is common practice to fill cans on a traveling table, and it is desirable to apply a distinguishing mark to all cans in any one batch, whereby to distinguish same from cans of other batches.
An object of the present invention is to provide automatically operating stamping means which will operate in synchronlsm with the moving table carrying the members to be filled.
A further object is to provide automatic stamping mechanism for operating upon a series of members in succession having novel means for applying fresh ink to the stamping member for each operation.
A further object is to provide a simple and sturdy stamping mechanism which is positive in its action and which has very little liklihood of getting out of order.
A further object is to provide stamping mechanism which may be readily applied to filling members which are already in service.
Further objects will appear as the description proceeds.

The present invention has been illustrated and will be described particularly with reference to mechanism for filling cans. It will be apparent, however, as the description proceeds that the invention is equally applicable to other members which should be Stamped in succession. Before proceeding Serial No. 541,925.
to a detailed description of the illustrated embodiment, a few prefatory remarks may be made concerning the general functions of said illustrated embodiment. The drawings illustrate a structure which is particularly applicable to the filling of milk cans. The cans are mounted upon a revoluble table and are gradually filled as they are being carried by said table from the point of application to said table to the point of removal from said table. Operating in timed relation with the driving mechanism for said traveling table is certain printing mechanism having the function of operating a stamping member to and fro between an inking pad and a can being filled, cam mechanism being provided for actuating said stamping member successively into contact with said inking pad and with the cans to be marked, the structure being such as to ensure a clean ink applying action and a clean stamping action. The operation is continuous, the stamping being accomplished with a snap action whereby a clean-cut mark is left on the can without the necessity of stopping the travel* ing motion of the cans. The invention also contemplates mechanism for changing the relative positions of the inking pad and stamping member during successive inking operations, whereby fresh ink is applied to the stamping member for each operation.
The numeral 1 indicates a revoluble table adapted to carry cans 2-2 in a circumferential direction. Said table 1 may be provided with a guide 3 for guiding the cans 2-2 into proper position on the table 1. Locating means 4 may be provided for properly positioning the cans 2-2 whereby the openings 5-5 in the tops of said cans will lie directly under the filling members 6 which communicate with tubes 7-7. which in turn connect with a source of milk supply. Obstacle operating means. which need not be described herein, will be provided for turning on and turning off the fiow of milk through said filling members 6 at the proper points in the travel of the table 1. A stamping member is indicated by the numeral 8. which stamping member is adapted to engage successively with the inking pad 9 and a can 2. Said stamping member 8 is automatically moved into proximity to the inking pad 9. tripped into contact therewith. moved back into proximity to a can 2 and tripped into stamping relation with said can.
The mechanism for operating the stamping mechanism will now be described. The revoluble table 1 may be driven by any preferred mechanism. Said table 1 is provided with a gear 10 concentric with said table 1 and movable therewith, meshing with said gear 10 is the gear 11 fixed upon shaft 12 (Figure 3). Also mounted upon the shaft 12 is the gear 13 meshing with the pinion 14, which pinion 1 ldrives the vertically extending shaft 15 upon which is mounted the cam member 16. ,Mounted off center on said cam member 16 is the pitman 17 which connects with the reciprocating crosshead 18 mounted upon the slide 19, which slide 19 is relatively fixed. Said cross-head 18 carries the resilient member 20 upon which the stamping member 8 is mounted and also carries the operating arm 21 which carries the adjustable screw 22 for ope 'ating the pawl 23 which controls the movement of the inking pad 9. The pawl 23 is provided with a rod 24-, which is biased by a spring 25 to hold said pawl in retracted position. Reciprocating movement of the cross-head 18 caused by revolution of the cam member 16 will result in contact between the operating screw 22 and the rod 24, causing a reciprocating movement of the pawl 23 to produce a rotary movement of the inking pad 9. Said inking pad 9 may be provided with teeth 26 cooperating with the pawl 23 for the production of said. rotary movement. A detent 27 suitably mounted upon a fixed part of the mechanism will hold the inking pad 9 in fixed position between actuations by said pawl 23.
Reciprocation of cross-head 18 will produce a reciprocatory movement of the stamping member 8 from a position in proximity to the inking pad 9 to a position in proximity with a can 2. The cam member 16 is provided with a pair of projecting portions 2828 adapted to actuate the resilient member 20, whereby to move the stamping member 8 into successive contact with the stamping member 9 and a can 2. The members 2828 will be so formed as to permit the resilient member 20 to quickly retract the stamping member 8 from said stamping member 9 or can 2, whereby to ensure clean inking and clean stamping. The cam 16 will be so designed with reference to the remaimler of the transmitting mechanism that the inking and stamping will be in proper timed relation with the movements of the cans and of the inking pad 9. If preferred, the resilient member 20 may be provided with a pair of relatively hard contact members 29-29 for contacting with the members 2S--2S of the cam 16. The resilient member 20 and the stamping member 8 are mounted upon the cross-head 18 in such a way as to be readily removable and replaceable so that the type in the stamping member 8 may be conveniently changed when desired. For the purpose of providing this ready removability and replaceability, the member 20 may be secured to the crosshead 18 by means of the bolt 30 having the operating handle 81.
The mode of operation of the above described embodiment of the present invention will be clear from the drawings and from the detailed description appearing above. It may be stated briefly, however, that the table 1 may be continuously operating, the cans 2-2 being fed thereto in sue cession and removed therefrom in succes sion, being filled while traveling from the point where said cans are applied to the table to the point where said cans are removed from said table. While the cans are continuously traveling, the stamping member 8 will be operated with a reciprocatory movement from a position in proximity to the inking pad 9 to a position in proximity to each of the cans in succession. The various parts are mounted in timed relation, being positively geared together, whereby the cam member 16 will move the stamping member 8, with a snap action, into contact with the cans in succession permitting same to be withdrawn with a snap action. After each stamping operation the stamping member 8 will be automatically moved into proximity to the inking pad 9, which pad will have been moved automatically to a position to present a fresh inking surface to said stamping member 8, and the cam member 16 will cause said stamping member 8 to move with a snap action into contact with the inking pad 9 and to be withdrawn from said inking pad with a snap action, whereby. clean inking will be accomplished. The cans will be stamped in succession, whereby, after said cans have been distributed to the market, the particular filling operation to which they have been subjected may be identified. The stamping member 8 is readily removable and replaceable whereby the numbers or figures contained in said inking member may be changed with a minimum of interference with the operation of the machine.
Though the present invention has been illustrated and described in connection with a machine for filling milk cans, it will be understood that the invention has a much broader applicability and is subject to many modifications. It is intended in this patent to cover all such modifications that fall within the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In combination, non-intermittent conveying means, movable stamping means, resilient means for mounting said stamping means and biasing same to a position away from its stamping position, inking means,

In combination, non-intermittent conveying means, movable stamping means, resilient means for mounting said stamping means and biasing same to a position away from its stamping position, means operating in timed relation with said conveying means for causing a reciprocating movement of said stamping means in a path ditlerent from its stamping movement and means also operating in timed relation with said conveying means for tripping said stamping means with a snap movement and permitting the withdrawal of said stamping means by said resilient means with a snap movement.
3. In combination, non-intermittent conveying means, movable stamping means, resilient means for mounting said stamping means and biasing same to a position away from its stamping position, means for caus ing a reciprocatory movement of said stamping means from one predetermined position to a second predetermined position, and cam means for communicating a snap movement in another direction to said stamping means while said stamping means is in either of said positions and permitting the withdrawal of said stamping means by said resilient means with a snap movement.
4. In combination, non-intermittent conveying means, movable stamping means, resilient means for mounting said stamping means and biasing same to a position away from its stamping position, a movable inking pad, means for causing the reciprocation of said stamping means to one or another of two predetermined positions, one of which is in proximity to said inking pad, and cam means operating in timed relation with said conveying means for imparting a snap movement in another direction to said stamping means when said stamping means is in proximity to said inking pad and when in said other predetermined position, permitting the withdrawal of said stamping means by said resilient means with a snap movement when said stamping means is in either of said positions.
5. Mechanism for filling and stamping cans which comprises rotary non-intermittent conveying means for said cans, stamping means, means for reciprocating said stamping means, resilient means for mounting said stamping means, an inking pad, and means geared to said rotating table for operating said reciprocating means and for imparting another movement with a snap action to said stamping means for ink applying and stamping functions.

In combination, non-intermittent con veying means, movable stamping means, resiiient means for mounting said stamping means and biasing same to a position away from its stamping position, means for causing a reciprocatory movement of said stamping means from one predetermined position to another predetermined position and means for communicating another movement, with a snap action, to said stamping means while said stamping means is in said positions and permitting the withdrawal 01'. said stamping means by said resilient means with a snap action.
7.1n combination, non-intermittent ro tary conveying means, members carried thereby to be stamped, cam means driven in timed relation with said conveying means, pawl means driven in timed relation with. said conveying means, resilient means for mounting said stamping means, inking means operated by said pawl means, stamping means, means operating in timed relation with said cam means for causing a reciproating movement between a position in proximity to said inking means and a posisition in proximity to a member to be stamped, said cam means being provided with means for communicating another movement, with a snap action, to said stamping means when said stamping means is in either of said positions and permitting the withdrawal of said stamping means by said resilient means with a snap action.
8. In combination, nonintermittent rotary conveying means, members carried thereby to be stamped, cam means driven in timed relation with said conveying means, pawl means driven in timed relation with said conveying means, inking means operated by said pawl means, stamping means, resilient means for mounting said stamping means, means operating in timed relation with said cam means for causing a reciprocating movement between a position in proximity to said inking means and a position in pr0ximity to a member to be stamped, said cam means being provided with means for communicating another movement, with a snap action, to said stamping means when said stamping means is in a position adjacent to a member to be stamped and permitting the withdrawal of said stamping means by said resilient means with a snap action.
9. In combination, non-intermittent rotary conveying means, stamping means mounted adjacent to said rotary conveying means, said stamping means including power transmitting mechanism, a cam driven by said power transmitting mechanism, a holder driven with a reciprocating movement by said power transmitting mechanism,
a resilient member removably carried by said holder, said resilient member being mounted for cooperation with said cam member, said cam member being designed to move said resilient member with a snap action from its biased position and to permit said resilient member to withdraw with a snap action from an unbiased position, an inking member, a stamping member carried by said resilient member, pawl means for moving said inking member and means carried by said holder for resiliently operating said pawl member.
10. In combination, non-intermittent rotary conveying means adapted for carrying members to be stamped, stamping means mounted adjacent to said conveying means, a cam member driven synchronously with said conveying means, said cam member having a pair of relatively high portions, a stamping member, an elongated resilient member for carrying said stamping member, said resilient member being located in a position to be engaged by the high portions of said cam member, reciprocating means driven synchronously with said conveying means for moving said resilient member in the direction of its length, inking means with which said stamping member is adapted to cooperate, pawl means for moving said inking means and means movable with said reciprocating member for yieldingly operating said pawl means.

In combination, non-intermittent rotary conveying means adapted for carrying members to be stamped, stamping means mounted adjacent to said conveying means, a cam member driven synchronously with said conveying means, said cam member having a pair of relatively high portions, a stamping member, an elongated resilient member for carrying said stamping member, said resilient member being located in a position to be engaged by the high portions of said cam member, reciprocating means driven synchronously with said conveying means for moving said resilient member in the direction of its length.
