or circuit breaker structure for controlling or protecting electric circuits carrying current for power, lighting or other purposes.
In accordance with my invention, circuit breaker structure, may be tripped manually or otherwise than automatically by means operated or controlled by a door or movable wall of a housing in which the circuit breaker structure is enclosed, as upon movement of such wall or door to position to allow access to the interior of the ,housing.
In accordance with my invention, the circuit breaker structure may be tripped manually or otherwise than automatically by means operable from the exterior of the housing, and in addition to the above mentioned tripping means operated or controlled by the housing wall or door.
In accordance with my invention, the circuit breaker mechanism may be both manually or automatically tripped and reclosed or reset by novel structure of the character hereinafter described.
My invention resides in features of structure and combination hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, upon a base 1, of suitable insulating two switch, or circuit breaker mechanisms, A. and B, Fig. 2, the description of the parts of one of which will suflice .for both.
As indicated in Fig. 5, each circuit breaker comprises the main contact terminals 2 and 3, adapted to be connected or bridged by the bridging contact member 1, each circuit breaker being provided with an overload or other tripping. coil 5. As indicated the tripping coils are in series with the circuit breakers, one circuit breaker and its tripping coil being connected in each side of a supply circuit. For example, as indicated in Fig. 5, the two supply conductors 6 and 7 connect with the upper main terminals 2, and the lower ends of the tripping coils 5 communicate with the consumption circuit conductors 8 and 9. It will be understood, however, that the breakers may be otherwise connected in circuit, .as for example, in series with each other in one and the same side of a circuit.
The main terminals 2 and 3 are secured upon the base 1, and the laminated bridging member 1 is carried by an arm 10 pivoted to the bracket 11 at 12. Pivoted to the arm Mat 13 is a toggle link or member 14 pivoted at 15 to the toggle link 16, pivoted at 17 to the housing or bracket 11 secured upon the base 1. The toggle link 14 may, as indicated, take the form of a plate or plates 18 carrying the pin or roller 19 and also the pin or roller 20, which is engaged by the hook latch 21 pivoted to the housing 11 at 12 concentrically with the latch actuator 22 having the tail "23 adapted to be engaged and shifted by the-arm 24 carried on thearmature 25, pivoted at 2'6 and co acting material, are secured with the poles 27 27 of the electro-magnet whose winding is 5. The latch actuators 22 of the two breakers A and B are con nected together by the transversely extending bar 28, whereby, by actuation of either latch actuator 22, either automatically or manually, the latches 21 of both breakers will be actuated to release them and allow their movable contact members to fly to open circuit position.
As well understood in the art, upon occurrence of overload or other predetermined electrical condition, the armature 25 will be attracted to the poles 27, 27, causing tripping of the circuit breaker structure, in which case the under-travelled toggle structure 14, 16 will collapse, the arm 10 rotating in clockwise direction, Fig. 1, carrying the movable contact member 4 away from the main terminals 2 and 3. Accompanying this movement, the rollers or pins 19 of both breakers A and B will be in elevated position, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4.
Secured to the base 1, or otherwise suitably supported, is a housing or box H enclosing the circuit breakers A and B and having the movable wall or door D. When the wall D is a door, it may be hinged, as at its upper edge, to swing outwardly about a horizontal axis to allow access to the mechanism within the housing H.
Carried upon the wall D is the plate 29 having the inwardly extending bracket 30 having at its end the boss or hub 31 forming a bearing for the shaft or rod 32, which partakes of both rotary and longitudinal movements. Secured in fixed position upon the shaft 32 is the hub 33 having the upstand-.
ing arm 34, to which is secured the actuator member 35, preferably of insulating material, whose side edges 36, 36 are adapted to engage and depress the aforesaid pins or rollers 19, 19. Wrapped around the outer end of the hub 33 is the helical spring 37, whose opposite ends 38 and 39 embrace the bracket 30 and are disposed on opposite sides of the arm 40, secured to the hub 33. Outside of the wall D is the handle bracket 41 carrying the operators handle 42. The shaft 32 extends through the bracket 41 and is capable of longitudinal motion with respect thereto, by pressure upon the button 43, in opposition to the spring 44. While the shaft 32 may be moved longitudinally with respect to the bracket 41, that bracket is capable of rotating the shaft 32 upon rotation of the handle 42, the bracket members 41 having rectangular or other openings through which the shaft 32, similarly shaped at its outer end, passes, whereby the bracket may rotate the shaft 32, but the shaft 32 may move longitudinally with respect to the bracket.
Upon the exterior of the wall D is secured a member 45 in the form of a staple or equivalent, adjacent which comes the end 46 of the bracket 41 when the latter is in its mid or neutral position. Through the members 45 and 46 may be slipped a locking member, as a padlock, whereby the shaft 32 cannot be rotated by the handle 42 to set or reclose the circuit breakers, though they may be tripped by pushing inwardly upon the button 43.
Pivoted at 47 on the upward extension 48 of the hub 31 is the tripping member 49 hav ing a lug 50 adapted to be engaged and actuated by the inner end of the shaft 32'and having an end 51 adapted to engage and actuate the bar 28 connecting the latch actuators 22.
Accordingly, by pushing inwardly upon. the button 43, the shaft 32 is moved inwardly to actuate the member 49 upon its pivot 47 to engage and actuate the latch actuators 22 to trip the circuit breakers; the movement of member 49 is limited by the stop 48 on member 48.
The circuit breakers may be reset by rotating the handle 42 first in one direction to cause the member 35 to actuate the pin or roller 19 of one of the breakers downwardly, extending its toggle mechanism and moving it to latching and circuit closing position. The handle 42 is then rotated in opposite direction to similarly reset or close the circuit breaker, the spring 37 opposing movement of the member 35 from its neutral or mid position and restoring it to such position upon release of the handle 42.
Pivoted to a wall of the housing H or other suitable support at 52 is a second tripping member 53, whose end 54 is adapted to engage and actuate the bar 28 and thereby actuate both latch actuators 22 and through them the latches of both circuit breakers to trip them. The angular movement of the lever 53 upon its pivot 52 is limited by the pin 55 carried by the housing or other sup port and extending through the slot 56 in the lever 53. Carried by a movable wall or door, as D, is a bracket 57 carrying a roller 58 co-acting with the dog 59 pivoted at 60 to the tripping lever 53, the dog 59 having a tail 61 laterally extending and adapted to engage the laterally extending ear 62 on the lever 53.
If the wall or door D be moved, as outwardly or towards the right, Fig. 1, the roller 58, moving therewith, engages the end of the dog 59, whose counter-clockwise rotation upon pivot 60, Fig. 1, is limited by the tail 61 engaging the ear 62, thereby causing the dog and the right .nd of the lever 53 to rise. whereby the lever 53 rotates in counterclockwise directiou, Fig. 1, upon its pivot 52. and brings its end 54 into engagement with the bar 28, thereby tripping the breakers or either of them which may be in closed position.

As a modification of the tripping member 53 and its associated parts, there may be employed the structure indicated in Figs. 12 to 23 inclusive, wherein the tripping lever 68, pivoted to the housing at 64, has a pin and slot connection with the longitudinally movable bar havingthehead 66, the bar 65 being carried in the bracket members 67 and movable toward the right in opposition to the spring 68. Pivoted at 69 on a bracket 70 carried by the door or wall D is the dog 71, whose upper end 72 rides under the bracket 73 and whose lower end 74.- is adapted to engage the head 66 of b-ar 65.
In moving the door or wall D toward the right, Fig. 12, the lower end of the dog 74 engages the head 66 and pulls the rod 65 toward the right in opposition to springs 68, the bracket 7 3 preventing rotation of the dog 71 during this action. The rod 65 causes the lever 63 to engage the bar 28 andso trip the circuit breakers or any of them. Eventually, the end 72 of the dog 71 rides past the bracket 73 toward the right, whereupon the dog 71 exerts no further influence upon the rod 65, which is accordingly restored to normal position by the spring 68. door I), the lower end of the dog 74 will ride over the head 66, the dog rotating in counter-clockwise direction upon its pivot 69 in so doing, and will again engage under the bracket 73.
In general, it will therefore be understood that in case of overload on either side. of a circuit, one or both of the electro-magnets 5 will be energized, causing tripping of both breakers.
The breakers may be reset, as previously described, by operating the handle 42 first in one direction and then in the other. The breakers may be. manually tripped by pushing inwardly upon the button 43 to actuate the tripping member 49, which latter does not rotate. with the handle '42 and member 35, but is actuated only upon longitudinal movement of the shaft 32.

What I claim is:
1. The combination with a switch member, of means for restraining the same in normal position, a tripping member therefor, a support for said tripping member movable with respect tosaid switch mem her and restraining means, a member carried by said support and hiovable with re.- spect to said tripping member in one direction for actuating said tripping member to trip said switch member, and means actuated by said member by movement in another direction'for resetting said switch member.
2. The combination with a switch member, of means for restraining the same in normal position, a-support movable with respect to said member and means, a tripping member carried by said support, a member carried by said support and capable of rotary and longitudinal movements, said member by one of its movements reldtively to said tripping member actuating said tripping member to trip said-switch member, and means actuated by said member by the other of its said movements for resetting said switch member.
3. The combination with a switch member, of means for restraining the same in normal position, movable support upon which said tripping member is pivoted, a member. carried by said support and detached from said tripping member and of longitudinal and rotary movements, said member in its longitudinal movement actuating said tripping member to trip said switch member, and means actuated by said member during rotary movement for resetting said switch member.

The combination with a switch member, of means for restraining the same in normal position, a support movable with respect to said member and means, a tripping member carried by said support, an actuating member movable independently of said tripping member for actuating said switch member carried by said support, and means capable of movements in different directions for operating, respectively, said tripping member and said actuating member.
5. The combination with a switch member, of means for restraining the same in normal position, a housing enclosing said switch member, a tripping member and an actuating member detached from each other a tripping member, a-
and carried by said housing and movable independently of each other with respect to housing capable of movements in ditl'erent directions for operating said tripping member and said actuating member.

The combination with a switch member, of an operating member therefor, a latch for locking said switch member in normal position, a rotatable actuator for actuating said operating member, a tripping member detached from and movable independently of said actuator for actuating said latch, and a member carrying said actuator and movable with respect to said tripping member and capable of movements in dlfi'erent directions for operating, respectively, said tripping member and said actuating member.

The combination with a plurality of switch members, of means for restraining the same in normal position, an actuator rotatable in opposite directions for actuating said switch members in succession, a tripping member detached from and movable independently of said actuator for tripping said switch members, and a 1nember movable. with respect to said tripping member and capable of longitudinal move ment for actuating said tripping member and of rotative movement for rotating said actuator.
8. The combination with a plurality of switch members, of means for restraining the same in normal position, a housing, a tripping member and an actuator detached from and movable independently of each other carried by said housing for tripping said switch members and for actuating them in succession, and means movable with respect to said tripping member and operable from the exterior of said housing for imparting to said tripping member and said actuator movements in dii'l'erent directions.

The combination with a switch member, of means for restraining the same in normal position, a housing, a tripping member pivoted on said housing, an actuator for said switch member carried by said housing and movable independently of said tripping member, and a member carried by said housing and operable fro-mthe exterior thereof for actuating said actuator and said tripping member by movements in difierent directions.

The combination with a switch member, of means for restraining the same in normal position, an enclosing housing having a movable wall, a tripping member carried by said wall, an actuator for said switch member carried upon said wall and capable of movement independently of said tripping member, and a member carried by said wall and operable from the exterior of said housing for actuating said actuator and said tripping member by movements in different directions.

The combination with a switch member, of means for restraining the same in normal position, an enclosing housing having a movable wall, an actuator for said switch member carried by and movable with respect to said wall, a tripping member pivoted to said wall independently of said actuator, and a member carried by said wall and operable from the exterior of said housing for actuating said actuator and said tripping member by rotary and longitudinal movements, respectively.

The combination with circuit breaker mechanism. comprising a movable switch arm, means for restraining the same in normal position, and automatic tripping mechanism therefor, of an actuator and a tripping member in detached relation with respect to said switch arm and restraining means, re spectively, a support for said actuator and tripping member, said tripping member pivoted to said support independently of said actuator, and a member carried by said support and movable in diiferent directions for actuating said actuator toreset said switch arm and to actuate said tripping member.
13. The combination with circuit breaker mechanism comprising a movable switch arm, means for restraining the same in normal position, and automatic tripping mechanism therefor, of an actuator and a trippingmember in detached relation with respect to said switch arm and restraining means, respectively, a support for said actuator and tripping member, said tripping member pivoted to said support independently of said actuator, and a longitudinally and rotatably movable member carried by said support, said member by longitudinal movement actuating said tripping member, and by rotatable movement rotating said actuator independently of said trlpping member.
14. The combination with a switch member, of means for restraining the same in normal position, a support, a tripping member for actuating said restraining means carried by said support, a rotatable actuator carried by said support in detached relation to said switch member, a longitudinally movable member movable with respect to said tripping member for actuating the same and carried by said support, said actuator rotatable independently of said tripping member about an axis substantially parallel with the direction of movement of said longitudinally movable member.

The combination with a switch member, of means for restraining the same in normal position, a support, a tripping member tor actuating said restraining means pivoted upon said support, a rotatable actuator carried by said support in detached relation to said. switch member, a longitudinally mbvable member carried by said support for moving said tripping member upon its pivot, said actuator rotatable independently of said tripping member in a plane substantially normal to the plane of movement of said pivoted tripping member.

The combination with a switch member, of means for restraining the same in normal position, a housing having a movable wall, a member carried by said movable wall for tripping said switch member, and a second tripping, member movable with said movable wall for actuating said restraining means to trip said switch member.
17. The combination with a switch member, of means for restraining the same in normal position, a housing having a movable wall, a tripping member carried by said wall and operable when said wall is in predetermined position for actuating said restraining means to trip said switch member, and a second tripping member carried by said movable wall for actuating said restraining means to trip. said switch member when said wall is moved from said predetermined position.
18. The combination with a switch member, of means for restraining the same in normal position, a stationary housing having a movable wall, a movable member for actuating said restraining means to trip said switch member, atripping member carried by said movable wall for actuating said movable member, and a member carried by said housing and partaking of movements in difi'erent directions for actuating said switch member .and said restraining means, respectively.
19. The combination with a switch member, of means for restraining the same in normal position, a stationary housing having a movable wall, a'movable member for actuating said restraining means to trip said switch member, a tripping member carried by said movable wall for actuating said movable member, and a member carried by said movable wall and partaking of movements'in difi'erent directions for actuating said switch member and said restraining means, respectively.
20. The combination with a movable switch member, of means for restraining the same in normal position, a housing having a movable wall, a movable member for actuating said restraining means, a member movable with said wall, means intervening between said last named member and said movable member for causing actuation of said movable member to trip said switch member upon movement of said movable wall in one direction only, and a tripping member carried by said movable wall for independently tripping said switch member.
21. The combination with'a switch member, of restraining means therefor, a movable member for actuating said restraining means to trip said switch member, a housing having a movable wall, a member movable therewith, and a pivoted dog intervening between said last named member and said movable member for efiecting movement of said movable member by movement of said movable wall in one direction only.
22. The combination with a switch member, of restraining means therefor, a movable member for actuating said restraining means to trip said switch member, a housing having a movable wall, a member movable therewith, and a dog pivoted to said movable member intervening between said last named member and said movable member for efiecting movement of said movable member by movement of said movable wall in one direction only.
23. The-combination with a switch member, of means for restraining the same in normal position, a housing having a movable wall, a member for tripping said switch member carried by said housing, and means -movable with said movable wall and disconnected from said restraining means for actuating said tripping, member and through said tripping member actuating said restraining means.
24. The combination with a plurality of switch members, of means for restraining the same in normal position, a housing, a tripping member carried by said housing, an actuator carried by said housing for actuating said switch members in succession, and a second tripping member actuated by a wall of said housing.
25. The combination with a plurality of switch members, of latches for restraining the same in normal position, latch actuators, e
a member interconnecting said latch actuators, a tripping member for actuating said interconnecting member, an actuator for actuating said switch members in succession, a member partaking of movements in difi'erent directions for actuating said actuator and said tripping member, a housing having a movable wall, a movable member carried by said housing for actuating said latches, and a member movable with said wall for actuating said movable member.

The combination with a plurality of switch members, of latches for restraining the same in normal position, latch actuators, a member interconnecting said latch actuators, a tripping member for actuating said interconnecting member, an actuator for actuating said switch members in succession, a member partaking of movements in difierent directions for actuating said actuator and said tripping member, a housing having a movable wall, and a second tripping member actuated by said wall.
27. The combination with a movable. switch member and means for restraining the same in normal position, of housing structure, a pivoted member for tripping said switch member, a dog pivoted on said tripping member for actuating-the same in one direction only, and means movable with said housing structure for engaging said dog to actuate said tripping member.
28. The combination with. a movable switch member and means for restraining the same in normal position, of a pivoted tripping member for actuating said restraining means to trip said switch member, an actuating member rotatable about an axis non-coincident with the pivotal axis of said tripping member for resetting said switch member, and a member movable longitudinally independently of and with respect to said tripping member in a path substantially coincident with the axis of rotation of said actuating member for actuating said trip ping member.
29. The combination with a movable switch member, of means for restraining the same in normal position, a housing having a movable wall, a bracket on said wall within said housing, a tripping member pivoted on said bracket and adapted to actuate said restraining means to trip said switch member. a longitudinally movable member carried by said wall and operable from the ex terior thereof for actuating said tripping member, and an actuating member for resetting said switch member rotatable about an axis corresponding substantially with the axis of movement of said longitudinally movable member.
30. The combination with a movable contact member of a switch, of means for restraining the same in normal position, mechanism for operating said contact member to normal position, a housing having a movable wall, a member carried by said housing and operable from the exterior thereof for actuating said operating mechanism, a tripping member movable with said movable wall for actuating said restraining means to trip said switch member upon movement of said wall to open position, said operating mechanism being operable to move said movable contact member to restrained position independently of return of said wall to closed position.

The combination with a movable contact member of a switch, of means for restraining the same in normal position, mechanism for operating said contact member to normal position, a housing having a movable wall, a member carried by said movable wall in detached relation to said operating mechanism for actuating said operating mechanism to reset said movable contact member in normal position, a tripping member movable with said movable wall for actuating said restraining means to trip said switch member upon movement of said wall to open position, said operating mechanism being operable to move said movable contact member to restrained position independently of return of said wall to closed position.

The combination with a movable switch member and means for restraining the same in normal position, of a pivoted tripping member for actuating said restraining means to trip said switch member, an actuating member rotatable about an axis non-coincident with the pivotal axis of said tripping member for resetting said switch member, and a member carrying said actuating member movable longitudinally independently of and with respect to said tripping member in a path substantially coincident with the axis of rotation of said actuating member for actuating said tripping member.
33. The combination with switching mechanism comprising a movable switch member and means for restraining the same in normal position, of housing structure enclosing said switching mechanism and movable toward and away from said switching mechanism, a tripping member carried by said housing structure for controlling said restraining means to trip said switch member, and a second tripping member movable with said housing structure for controlling said restraining means independently of said first tripping member to trip said switch member.

The combination with switching mechanism comprising a movable switch member and means for restraining the same in normal position, of housing structure enclosing said switch mechanism and movable toward and away from said switching mechanism, a tripping member carried by said housing structure for controlling said restraining means to trip said switch member, and a second tripping member carried by said housing structure and controlling said restraining means in response to movement of said housing structure to trip said switch member.
35. The combination with switching mechanism comprising a movable switch member and means for restraining the same in normal position, of structure having a movable wall, an actuator carried by said movable wall in detached relation to said switch member for resetting said switch member, a tripping member carried by said wall and disposed in detached relation to said restraining means for actuating said restraining means to trip said switch member when said actuator is in operative position with respect to said switch member, and a second tripping member carried by said. movable wall for actuating said restraining means independently of said first named tripping member to trip said switch member.
36. The combination with switching ill) mechanism comprising a movable switch member and means for restraining the same in normal position, of housing structure enclosing said switching mechanism and movable with respect thereto, an actuator carried by said housing structure in detached relation to said switch member tor resetting said switch member, a tripping member carried by said housing structure and disposed in detached relation to said restraining means 'for controlling said restraining means to trip said switch member when said actuator is in operative position with respect to said switch member, and a, second tripping member carried by said housing structure for controlling said restraining means in response to movement of said housing structure to trip said switch member.

The combination with a switch unit comprising amovable contact member and meansfor locking ,said contact member in normal position, of an enclosing housing for said switch unit disposed in detached relation with respect to said switch unit, an actuator disposed in detached relation to said switch unit and carried by said housing and operable from the exterior thereof for resetting said movable contact member,
and a member carried by said housing in detached relation to said. locking means and capable of movement with respect to said switch unit for controlling said locking means to trip said movable contact member in response to said movement with respect to said switch unit.
38. The combination with a switch unit comprising a movable contact member and means for locking said contact member in normalposition, of an enclosing housing for said switch unit disposed in detached relationwith respect to said switch unit, an
actuator disposed in detached relation to said switch unit and carried by said housing and operable from the exteriorthereof for resetting said movable contact member, a member carried by said housing in detached relation to said locking means and capable of movement with respect to said switch unit for controlling said locking means to trip said movable contact member in response to said movement with respect to said switch unit, and a second member controlling said locking means and carried by and operable from the exterior of said housin 39. he combination with a switch unit comprising a movable contact member and means for looking it in normal position, of a housing enclosing said switch unit and ried by said movable wall for actuating said last named member in response to movement of said movable wall to trip said movable contact member.
