Description

A. E; AVERY CHERRY PITTER Nov'. 18, '1924 Filed Aug. 11 1924 Patented lil-ov. ld, lfgl.
iai
CHERRY PETTER.
Application filed. August 11, i924.
To all eti/0m t mog/concern:
Be it known that l, ADDISON E. Avena', a citizen of the United States, residing in Oak Park, in the county ot Cook and the State of illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cherry Pitters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a convenientI hand tool for removing the pits from cherries and like fruit. lt consists in the elements and features ot construction shown and described, as indicated in the claims.
In the drawings Figure l is a perspective view of a device embodying this invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view ot the same in the hand of the operator in the position of use.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the sheet metal blank trom which the handle or mount ot the device is formed by folding and stamping to clinch it upon the operative terminal of the tool.
Figure l is a plan view of the operative terminal of the tool detached from the mount or handle.
Figure 5 is a magnified cross section ott the tool showing the clinching ot the handle or mount upon the operative terminal.
Figure 6 is a. longitudinal section ot the device.
The device ot the invention comprises two parts,an operative terminal which is a wire loop. and a handle or mount which is a sheet metal stamping formed from a blank, B, which has its marginal areas, B1, B1. 'retlexed in opposite directions toward each other and folded and clinched down upon one side of the blank so as to make the mount or handle two-ply 'for clamping between the two plies the two limbs A1, ot the wire loop operative terminal, A, which become positioned and strongly held be tween the two plies by the formation in said' plies, or one of them, in the process of olinching the plies at their lines of folding and upon the wire, of corrugations or grooves, o1, b1, which house the said limbs Serial No. 731,247.
of the wire loop, with its terminal portion cci'nprisinp: the bend projecting entirely beyond the handle or mount, B, a distance which mai' be made greater or less by sliding the loop bodily in the grooves or corrugations, 1, the clinching of the marginal areas or iianges which constitute one ply of the mount, not being so tight as to prevent such limited sliding of the loop for adjustment in respect to the extent of its protruding' operative portion. To prevent the disengagement ot the loop from the handle by reason of the construction permitting such adjustment, the ends of the two limbs of the loop are each bent outwardly to torni stop terminals, as seen at 4.1, which stop against the shoulders vb2, which are formed at the upper ends of the grooves or corrugations, 1, the marginal areas or anges, B1, being not clinched down at their folds above this point, lout being clinched closely at the upper ends as seen at b3, so that there is lett between the shoul ders, o2 and the clinching at b3, a path in which the out-bent ends, al, may move in the slidingl ot' the limbs of the loop in the grooves for adjustment as indicated. The upper end portion ot the mount or handle, B, beyond the clinching at o3, is flexed inwardly-that is, toward the side on which the flanges, B1, are folded and clinched,as seen at the portion, B2, thereby shaping the mount suitably for seating and being gripped by the thumb of the operator in the angle ot the iirst oint of the lirst finger, as seen in Figure 2, this being the intended and convenient manner ot gripping the tool in use.
l claim 1. A. device tor the purpose indicated comprising` a narrow wire loop and a tlat sheet metal mount for the same from which the wire loop projects rigidly substantially in the longitudinal direction ot said mount, the mount being dimensioned tor being grasped between the thumb and lirst joint ot the user with the loop projecting beyond the grasped portion.
2. A device for the purpose indicated, comprising a narrow wire loop and a sheet metal mount for the same adapted for grasping between the thumb and st finger ol' Ythe operator and Aflexed for Seating in the angle of the flexed ist joint of the finger.
3. In the' Construction deined in claim 2, foregoing, the sheet metal mount being folded to oim two plies between which the two limbs of the Wire loop are grasped, one of the plies having coirugations for seating the two limbs 'for limited sliding of the Wire loop longitudinall).v in the mount to vary the extent of its pioti'usion from said mount o1' handle.
En testimony whereof, l have hereunto Set my hand at Chicago, lllinois, this 9th day of August, 1924.
ADDISON It'. AVERY.
