PROTECTOR FOR BOXERS.
Continuation of application Serial No. 449,964,9f1ed March 5, 1921.
1922. Serial No. 605,642.
To all fao/tom z' may concern."
Be it known that I, Mouais GroLoMB a citizen of the United States, residing at ew York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefull Improvements in Protectors for Boxers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to novel and improved protecting devices or guards for boxers, as for instance described in my copending application Serial No. 449,964 of which this is a continuation. v
It is the principal object of the invention to provide a simply constructed guardor protector for boxers effectively preventing them from getting so-called cauliflower ears or cut eyebrows.
Another object of the invention is to'provide a guard of this character which 1s of any extremely simple and therefore inexpensive construction and which can be readily attached and removed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a guard of this character which is light but durable, and is provided with an inner lining to prevent possible injury to the protected or guarded parts by blows or punches received during boxing lessons or performances.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts, as will hereinafter be more fully described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing, I have disclosed certain embodiments of the invention, however, as the invention is susceptible of various modifications, the forms hereinafter set forth and shown in the drawing are to be considered as illustrative, rather than restrictive of the scope of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my novel protector. j
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of an ear cup.
Figure 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 illustrates the head of a boxer equipped with a protector constructed according to my invention seen from the front, and
This application filed December 8,
Figure 6 is a similar view seen from the rear.
The protector or guard comprises a bandv 10, preferably made 'of leather7 well padded byan innen rubber or rubber sponge 1ining 11 and covered by an outer moleskin lining 12 for the protection of the eyebrows.
Two ear- shaped cups 13 and 14 are secured to the inner face of the band 10, so as to cover the ears well when the protector is adjusted to the head of the boxer.
These cups each comprise a metal or aluminum plate 15 provided with a raised margin containing a plurality of holes 16, for the reception of fastening threads, and a center depression 17 adapted to cover the ear and equipped with holes to receive eyelets for ventilation purposes and for allowing the reception of sounds by the ear.
The margin of each of the cups is covered by a cushion of rubber sponge 19 enclosed or encased in a soft-rubber or moleskin lining 2O attached to the cup margins by suitable means, such as threads (not4 shown) which may be passed through the holes 16 of the band 10 in order to securely hold the ear guards to the band. Through band 10,
inner padding 11, and lining 12, eyelets 21I and 22 respectively, are passed and secured thereto which have perforations allowing the passage of sounds to t-he ear of the boxer for ventilation purposes and for allowing the boxer to hear advices from his trainer, or the calling of time etc. while training or performing.
The complete guard or protector is held in place by or position by means of elastic bands. One of these bands, 23 is secured with one end to the front of band 10, at the place of union 24 of both ends thereof, between the outer cover and inner lining thereof, and its other end is secured to a substantially horizontal elastic band 25 in approximately the middle thereof, and formed into a loop 26. `Another elastic band 27 is attached with its ends to the band 10 at opposite points thereof, near the ear guards and is secured in approximately its middle at its point of crossing 28 to the band 23.
An elastic chin strap 29 is secured with its ends to the band 10 near the ear guards and well in front of the same and is adapted to be placed under the chin of the. boxer.
The device is placed on the. head of a secured thereto by the knotting of Strings 30 and 31, so that the ear guards secured to the enlarged flaps 33 of bendldwill* be securely held over the ears While the. band will protect the eyebrows.
Hering thus deserbed myv ievelltolla what I claim as novel and desire to Secnreby Letters Patent of the United States is- Infaproteetor or boxers; a band to cover thatl portion of the forehead immediately above the7 eyebrows and extended rearwardly and' dowt'nwardlyl to overlie 'the ears, a dishshaped plate secured to each of said ear-overlying portions, a strip forfned as ahollow casing of a shape corresponding to the edge outline of the plate, the edges of said strip be.- ingI Secured bystt'ches extending through holes formed in the edge of: the plate, and a resilient ytlli'ng in such hollow casing, the casing and llng forming an independent cnshion'surrounding the edge of the plate and Wholly projecting inwardly of the inner surface of the band. f
