SAFETY FASTENER FO'R JEWELRY.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. BAKER,

a subject of the King of England, residing at Southampton, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Fasteners for Jewelry, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to safety fastening devices for scarf pins, brooches and other articles of jewelry in general.

The primary object of my invention is to provide a lock or fastening device to the article of jewelry to positively grip and clamp the pin and prevent the same from being removed or disconnected from the wearing apparel by accident-a1 dislodgment.

One of the objects of my invention is to provide a safety catch for jewelry including a safety clutch for engaging the pin so as to positively prevent the article from becoming detached from the goods and in addition necessitating some manipulation on the part of the owner in removing the article of jewelry from the clothing or as the case may be.

In order to more fully understand my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, showing a preferred embodiment thereof,

Figure 1 is a side view partly in section, showing the bar and safety clutch in its relation to the article of jewelry.

Figure 2 is a plan View thereof.

Figure 3 is a detail of the barrel for holding the pin.

Figure 4: is a modified form of the invention showing its application to a bar pin.

Figure 5 is a detailed view of the hinged connection between the bar and the pin.

Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and particularly to Figures to 3 inclusive, 5 designates the body portion of a bar or other piece of jewelry, one end of which is bent inwardly as indicated at 6 and its opposite end provided with ears 7, 8, to which the threaded barrel 9 is hingedly connected. The barrel above referred to is adapted to receive the threaded portion 10 of the pin 11 which is of a length to extend into a sleeve 10 mounted on the inwardly bent end 6 of the bar above referred to. The sleeve comprises a substantially cylindrical barrel having an aperture in the front end thereof to permit of the passage of the pin 11 into the inner end thereof.

By reason of this construction it will be readily seen that the pin 11 is not only held securely within the sleeve 10*, but in order to release the pointed end from the same, it is necessary to rotate the said pin so as to withdraw the pointed end of the pin outwardly whereby it may be disengaged from the goods or wearing apparel. However, the eyes 21 at the forward or opposite end of the bar 18 is connected to a hinged link 22 by the pin 23, a spring 24 on said last mentioned pin normally tending to move the link toward the safety clutch 20 or in other words, inwardly over the bar 18. The upper end of the link 22 is bifurcated to receive the eye 24 of the main bar pin 25 which extends into the safety clutch 20 above referred to.

While I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, I realize that in practice various alterations therein may be made. i therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction or otherwise altering the arrangement of the correlated parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is 1.
