MECHANISM FOR FORMING I-IING'ES 0F L-ASTS FOR- SHOES.
Original application filed June 6, 1923, Serial No. 643,609. Divided and this application filed March 1'7, 1924, Serial No. 699,681.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonen CLAUSING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Scioto and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanism for Forming Hinges of Lasts for Shoes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to mechanism for forming the hinges of lasts for shoes, and is a division of my application filed June 6, 1923, Ser. No. 643, 609.
It is the object of my invention to provide mechanism for forming the hinge portions of a wooden last, which lasts are used for the purpose of manufacturing shoes.
It will be understood that such hinges must be formed with great accuracy by severing the last body at predetermined angles and curves. It is also essential that the severing of the last into two parts and the removal of the surplus material be accomplished without injury to the last body.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a mechanism which will accurately effect these severing operations.
It is a further object to provide such a mechanism which will duplicate the same operations in the same way repeatedly, so that there will be uniformity in the product resulting from the use of my mechanism.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is plan view of the mechanism for forming the hinge of the last.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail plan of the mechanism shown in Figure 1, showing the mechanism in two positions, at the start and at the end of the hinging operation.
Figure 8 is a section through the support or block upon which is pivoted the carrier illustrated in the plan view in Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is an elevation of a last having a V-shaped section removed and ready for the application of the present invention.
Figure 6 is an elevation showing the last after it has been operated on by the mechanism herein, which cuts the semicircular hinge.
Referring to the drawings in detail:
In these drawings 1 have shown a table 1, upon which there is mounted a plate 2. This plate carries an adjustable stop 3. The
stop has a slot 4 for the reception of the adjusting bolt 5 carried by the plate 2. A nut 6 lines the stop 3 in any predetermined position. This stop is used for limiting the movement of the carrying plate 7, as will be further described hereinafter. This carrying plate 7 is pivoted upon the supporting plate by a pivot 8. The pivot 8 is adjacent to and connected with a projecting finger 9. A semi-circular cut-away portion or recess, known as asaw-slot, is formed in the plate 7 as at 10, adjacent to the finger 9. One part of this plate carries a pin 11, and the other part of the plate carries a pin 12, which is adjustable in the carrying plate 7 in the slot 13. Located adjacent to this saw-slot in this carrying plate is a vertically moving band-saw 14. The last is mounted upon the pins with the saw substantially parallel to and closely adjacent to the base of the cut-away portion in the top of the last. The last and holding plate 7 can then be moved about the pivot, thus forming the semi-circular hinge, by the saw cutting away the wood along the hinge line as at 16 in Figure 6.
A supplementary positioning arrangement is provided in having the plate 2, which is a relatively heavy plate, pivotally mounted upon the table 1 by means of the link 17, which is pivoted at 18 to the table 1, and is connected at 19 to the plate 2. It is positioned by the stop 20.
By this arrangement, it is possible to mount the last on the carryingblockwith. the plate 20 away from the saw, and then to bring the entire mechanism bodily adjacent to the saw, after which time the carrying plate is rotated for effecting the cut by the saw. This enables the operator to mount the last and adjust it, with respect to the carrying plate 7 and the plate 2, without being in proximity to the saw.
It will also be observed that the table 1 is provided with a saw-slot 21.
Referring to Figures 5 and 6, 22 designates the toe portion and 23 the heel portion of the last. In the toe portion is a transverse hole 24 and in the heel portion a transverse opening 25 adapted to receive the pins 11 and 12 to support the last in position to be cut by the saw 14.
I desire to comprehend within my invention such modifications as may be necessary to adapt it to varying conditions.
Having thus fully described my inven t-ion, what- I claim as new and desire to se cune by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a machine for forming a hinge, a supporting plate, a finger, pivot beneath said linger on which said plate moves, said plate having a semi-circu ar cut-away por tion entering said plate adjacent the linger, forming a recess, a supporting pin on one side of said cutaway portion, and second supporting finger on the other side of said portion.
2. In a machine for forming a hinge, a supporting plate, finger, a pivot beneath said finger on which said plate moves, said plate having a semi-circular tit-away portion entering said plate adjacent the tin r, forming a recess, a supporting pin on one side of said cut-away portion, and a second supporting finger on the other side of said portion, said' fingers being of different lengths.
,3. In a machine for forming a hinge, z supporting plate, a finger, pivot beneath said finger .on which said plate moves, said plate having a semi-circular out-away portion entering said plate adjacent the finger, forming a recess, a supporting pin on one Side of said cut-away portion, and a second supporting finger on the other side of said portion, one of said fingers being adjustable with respect to said plate.
4. In a hinging machine, a tab e, a saw, a pivotally mounted plate pivoted on said table, a supporting plate pivoted on the first-mentioned plate, a semicircular cut away portion in the second plate, means on the first plate for positioning the second plate, and means on the second. plate for supporting a last, whereby when the second plate is rotated on the first plate, said saw will cut a semi-circular out.
5. In a hinging machine, a table, a saw operating in conjunction therewith, a swinging plate mounted on said table, a supporting plate pivotally mounted on said plate,
an article mounted on said supporting plate adjacentto said saw, whereby when said supporting plate with the article is rotated on the first-mentioned plate, said saw will cut a semi-circular cuttherein.
6. In a hinging machine, a table, a vertically moving band saw operating in a saw slot in said table, a swinging plate pivoted on said table, adapted to be brought adjacent to said saw, means to stop said plate at a predetermined position, a supporting plate. pivot-ally mounted thereon adjacent said saw, vertically projecting fingers adapted to project into a member in either halt thereof, whereby as the supporting plate is moved re atively to said saw a semi-circular cut will be taken in said last.
7. In. a hinging machine, a table, a vertically moving band-saw operating in a sawslot in said table, a swinging plate pivoted on said table, adapted to be brought adjacent to said saw, means to stop said plate at a predetermined position, a supporting plate pivotally mounted thereon adjacent said saw, vertically projecting fingers adapted to project into a member in either half thereof, whereby as the supporting plate is moved relatively to said saw a semi-circular cut will be taken in said member, and means tor limiting the movement of said Supporting plate mounted on the first-mentioned plate.
8. In a hinging machine, a table, a bandsaw passing through a slot therein, a swinging plate pivotally mounted upon said table, a supporting plate mounted on said firstmentio-ned plate pivotally, a pin in either end thereof to supporting a. member, and a member having apertures in either end thereof, with a ii-shaped cut in the top thereof mounts: on said plate on said lin gers, and so located that the saw will be ad jacent the base of said ll-shaped cut-away portion, whereby as said plate and member are rotated a semi-circular out will be taken adjacent the base of said ll-shaped cut-away portion.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
