FRANK H. FISSE, OF CINCINNATI, OHIG, ASSIG-NOR. TO THE K-W AUTO SPECIALTY COMPANY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
SIDE WINDSHIELD FOR AUTOMOBILES.
Application filed November 2, 1922. Serial No. 598,465.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK H. Frssn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati. in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Side VVindshields for Automobiles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to side Windshields for deflecting the wind, rain, dust and the like at the sides of the main Windshields of automobiles, and has for its object the provision of novel means for mounting the frangible plate of the side windshield; and, further, the provision of novel clamping means for clamping the frangible plate.
It is the object of my invention further, to provide novel clamping means for the frangible plate, comprising strengthening members extending along both faces of said. frangible plate; and, further, to provide novel means whereby uneven strains transverse to the plane of the frangible plate are obviated or minimized; and the invention will be further readily understood from the following description and claims, and from the drawings, in which latter:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved device, shown applied to the sidepost of the main wind-shield, the side-post and the side shield-plate being partly broken away.
Fig. 2 is aplan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, with the shield-plate and its bars adjusted to show an edge-view thereof.
Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal cross-section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing the inside of the intermediate attaching clamp; and, v
Fig. 7 is a perspective view showingthe inside of the post clamp.
The side windshield comprises a transparent shield-plate 11 of frangible material such as glass. An attaching bar 12 extends along one face of said shield-plate. Each end of the attaching bar is provided with a foot 13 having an extended clamping face 14 in which there is a central hollow 15, to form said clamping face as a narrow clamping face extending over a substantial area of the frangible shield-plate.
The attaching bar is shown of substantial length and is arranged to be clamped at suitable points along its length by a clamp 16. The shieldplate is preferably pivoted by permit-ting rotation of the attaching bar in the clamp 16. Provision is thereby made for longitudinal adjustment and for pivotal adjustment of the shield-plate.
A clamp 17 coacts with the clamp 16 for securing the shield-plate with relation to a suitable support, exemplified as a post 18 of a main windshield. The connection between the clamps 17 and 16 is a pivotal connection. The connection between the clamp 17 and the post of the main windshield is preferably adjustable so as to clamp upon the post at any desired height, to permit the clamp 17 to extend in suitable direction from the main windshield, and to clamp posts of different thicknesses and or0ss-sectional forms.
In the present exemplification the clamp 17 comprises a jaw 21 and a jaw 22. The jaw 21 is provided with lugs 23, 24, between which a pivot-stem 25 extends, said pivotstem being spaced from the body 26 of said jaw. The pivot-stem comprises sections 27 28, which are polygonalin cross-section and separated by a reduced portion 29 of said stem.
The ends of the stem terminate in frustoconical sectorportions 31 of a fulcrum between the jaws 21, 22, the jaw 22 being provided with lugs 33, 34, provided with frustoconical sector-recesses 35, in which the frusto-conical sector-portions 31 are received for pivoting the jaw 22 on the jaw 21.
Screws 36 are received through comparatively large holes in the jaw 21 and are threaded into threaded holes 38 in the jaw 22, for connecting the jaws 21,22, permitting wide range of separation between said jaws, and providing pivotal connection and clampingmeans between said jaws.
The'clamp 16 comprises the plates 41, 42. The plates are provided with jaws 43, 44, at one-end, and with jaws 45, 46, at their other end. A bolt 47 has a head 48, adjacent-to which the shank of the bolt has a square portion 49, received in a similarly shaped hole 50 in one of the plates. A nut 51 is threaded to the threaded shank of the bolt for clamping the plates toward each other. I
The inner faces of the jaws 43, 44, are provided with ribs '54,: extendingdeii gth'w ise" of the ja W SQfor cooperating with the portions of polygonal cross-section of the st'ein25. The polygonal faces and theribs'ai'enuinen 0118 about the'aXis of the stein "so that co action may take place betweentheni in a great number of dlfferen't pesi'tions ofthe jaws about the stem, to providea great va riety of different positions for theclanip 16 about said steni and toprovide for a secure lisitie iin g of said clainpf with little exertion of po er" in clamping" the clanip.

reinfbi'ced bar extends al ong the face of'the frangible plate opposite the attaching bin-.121. The reinforce, bar is provided with foot62 ateacli'of ends. v This foot has In eiiteiided clainping face 63, in which th 'e is. aice ntr'al hollow (5 4:, the clan'iping facet being comparatively, narrow I p I The feet 18 and 62 are opposedtto each otherv at oppositesides of the shield-plate, tension ineinber being provided between the respective; ends, of the bars for clamping the shield p l'ate betw een'the bars. hole of the glass plate through which the bolt passes. Effective cushioning means are therebyprovided between the bars and said frangible shield plate, preventing chipping and fracture of the glass.
The bars are spaced from the frangible shield-plate by spaces 75, 76, between the ends of said respective bars, and the bars and theirconnecting tension members which extend through the glass plate forina rigid frame at both sideso'f the glass'p'late and intending through the glass plategto receive thest'rains and relieve the glass plate therefrom. I
The bars their feet and tensionineinbers are located within" the area of the shieldplate and are spaced from" all margins of said shield-plate, and the device presents a neat and strong appearance and a substantial and strong structure whichis' eXtre'lnely durable, and prevents vibration of the glass plate.
