residing in London, En land, have invented certain new and use Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the `following is a specification. i

This invention has for its object 'an improved advertising apparatus of the kind wherein a band, chain or similar' flexible member moves over suitably arranged Asprocket wheels and' carries detachably supported interchangeable designs, letterin s, figures, models or other symbols or e ements for advertising purposes, -which symlbols are intermittently exhibited before a window or panel in the casing of the apparatus,v the symbols being supported on the movingband or similar flexible member to form a horizontal row and independently one of another so that an one of the symbols can be. detached' or c anged without displacement of an adjacent symbol, and wherein lighting means, such as electric bulbs, are preferably provided in order that a displayed advertisement may be made visible and attractive at night in addition to being visible by day withoutthe use of the illuminating means.

In the improved apparatus the symbolsupporting member is arranged to travel Within the casing in a horizontal or a sub-A stantially horizontal direction, so that symbols assembled lengthwise of the flexible supporting member andthereby forming a horizontal row, come singly into vlevv'v through the window or panel and follow one another past said window or panel.

Moreover, each of the symbols forming a row is indepndently mount@ on the supporting mem r and is preferably attached thereto in such a. way that it cannot of itself move bodily in any direction relatively to the said member or be displaced bodily without the symbol being bentl or iexed.

The invention will be'further described with reference to fthe accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a sectional plan of a portion of the casing of one ,form of the apparatus, constructed according to the invention, the advertising symbols being detachably mounted on the endless moving band. v

The casing 1 of the improved apparatus may be of any convenient construction and design, and is provided ywith a front opening 2 in which is fitted a sheet 3 of glass or other transparent material. Within the casing is mounted a band 4 that travels plan of the horizontallj7 overa plurality of rollers or guides 6, a pair of which is shown in Fig.

1, and advertising symbols are detachably mounted on the band in such a way that,

as 'the band travels round the rollers, the symbols will come into view through. the opening 2, and pass out of view, one after another.

A convenient way of mounting the symbols is to form a number of slits or slots 9 in an endless band 10, and to provide each advertising element or symbol 11 lwith fingers or lugs 12. The lugs 12, which are formed integrally with the body portions lof the symbols 11 and lie in substantially the same planes as suchbody portions, are located at or adjacent the leading edges of the symbols, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and theslots 9 in the band are spaced apart at a. distance one from another .which is peferably less than the width of the symls, as shown in Figs. l1 and 2. In consequence of such arrangement of the lugs and slots, the leading edge of each symbol will be overlapped by the trailing edge portion of the next preceding symbol so that none of the leading edges of the symbols are exposed. In this way risk that symbols moving in one direction along one path may l ,engage with symbols moving in a reverse applied to one face of the band 10, and the fingers 12 thereonv are pushed through and engage in the slots 9, as indicated 1n Figs.

By mounting the sym ls in either of the parent material, and the elements ll ma be either of a like material, a part of eac element being rendered nontransparent or opaque by any suitable means, or of an opaque material with the advertising letters or device cut or stencilled out.

In the arrangement shown in lFigs. 3 and' 4, the endless band 13 is of nonetransparent material and is provided with a series of openings 1.4 along its length ot any desired configuration. The advertising elements or symbols 15 are of a transparent on translucent substance and comprise a symbol portion vand a ground portion, one or other of such portions being rendered opaque according to Whether the ground of the symbol is to be transparent or translucent in front of the openings lll.
