M. LEBEIS MAGNETIC PHONOGRAPH Oct. 28., 1924,.

Application filled June a, 19:2. ,serlal in. semen.
Toallwbamitmayconcm;
Be it known that I, Man-rm LEBEIS, a citizen of the German Republic, residing at Berlin-Friedenau, German have invented certainl Improvements in agnetic Phonographs, ofwhich the following is a specification.
- The .present invention relates to a phonograph of the kind in which the sound is recorded and re reduced magnetically by means of a trave ing steel wire or tape whic is carried by two reels, and is unwound from one reel while it is wound up on the other reel, and consists in winding the wire or tape on stationary reels by means of revolving winding-arms.
The arrangement has the advanta e that, since only a very small portion of t e wire is kept in motion, the momentum of the moving parts will be small and easy to overcome so that the machine can he stopped and reversed almost instantaneously without jerks and excessive strains on the elements,
which is essential, particularly when the apparatus is used for dictating purposes.
There will thus be no difliculty connected with the driving of the wire at the required speed, and any length of wire can be used without increasing the momentum of the moving parts. 7
The accompanying drawings represents, by way of example, 'a sectional side-view of the improved apparatus. v
The two stationary reels 0 and a are mounted rigidly, each by means of a hollow boss (1, on a base board 2. Rotatably held in each boss is a spindle m which carries at its upper end a bracket n. To each bracket is pivoted an arm I) which is spring-supported and which holds a pulley 8. Another pulley t, carried by a separate arm on the bracket, is arranged above the spindle m and so is a rigidly supported guide pulley u. The rec- 0rd wlre or tape 0 passes over the pulleys and can be wound on either reel by a rotary motion of the s indle 'm, in which the arm I) participates. etween the pulleys u the wire passes throu h a ma et element '0 by means of which t e soun are recorded on and reproduced from the wire.
Motion is imparted to the spindles in either direction by means of a revolving shaft 9 having two friction gears 70 with which to engage with friction gears e on the spindles. The shaft 9 is adapted for axial distribution of the coils on the receiving reel. For this purpose, the spindle m may be supported on cams or eccentrics Z operated by means of suitable gears and by a shaft 1'. The latter receives 1ts motion, through the medium of a bevel gear 0, from one of two bevel gears 12 g, mounted on the shaft 9. When the shaft 9 is ad'usted, either for stopping the machine or or reversing the motion of the wire a, the motion of the cams l is simultaneously stopped or reversed by the uncoupling of the. gears 0, p and q.
Should it be desired to wind the wire with greater speed on one reel than on the other, the gearing can be correspondingly altered.
I claim 1. In combination with the sound recording device of a magnetic phonograph, two
stationary reels adapted to carry the record wire, each of said reels having a revolubly mounted winding arm associated therewith and adjacent thereto, means for guiding the record wire over the said winding arms, and means for independently positively actuating either of said winding arms, whereby one of said winding arms is positively revolved to wind-the wire upon 'its adjacent stationary reel and the other arm is free to revolve to permit the unwinding of the wire from its adjacent stationary reel.
2. In combination with the sound recording device of a magnetic phonograph, two stationary reels adapted to carry the record wire, each. of said reels having a winding arm associated therewith and adjacent thereto, each of said arms being mounted upon mounted winding .arm associated therewith and adjacent thereto, means for guiding the record wire over the said winding arms, and means for independently positively actuating either of said winding arms, whereby one of said winding arms is positively revolved to wind the wire upon its adjacent stationary reel and the otherarm is free to revolve to permit the unwinding of the wire from its adjacent stationary reel, and means for imparting a relative movement between each said winding arm and its reel in a direction along the axis of the said reel.
4. In combination with the sound recording device of a magnetic phonograph, two stationary reels adapted to carry the record wire, each' of said reelshaving a winding
