Be it known that I, CHARLA-.s A.. MCNEAL, a. citizen of the United States, resident of Newark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have made a. certain new andiusevful lInvention in IlluminatedSigns; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or Hgures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a` face view of the invention.
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure l.
Figure 3 is a` section on the line 33 of Figure l.
Figure 4f is a detail perspective View of one of the end sections.
Figure 5 is a detail perspective viewA of a fragment of one of the interchangeable panels.
The invention relates to illuminated signs of sheet metal, having for an object to provide an improved sign of this description which will be light, rigid, and durable, and economical to manufacture.
'The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as set forth in the appended claims.
ln the accompanying drawings illustrating an embodiment of the invention, the numeral l designates the body of the sign composed of two identical interchangeable panels A and B, located edge to edge in the same plane, each composed of a single sheet of metal, the adjacent longitudinal edge portions of which are provided with opposite outwardly bent lapping flanges 2, forming a conduit 3 for the wiring, said conduit bea-ring a longitudinal row of lamp receptacles 4f, wherein are inserted a- -Ongitudinal row of lamps 5, the panels bein adjacent and parallel and the lamps being common to and illuminating both panels.
This being an exterior sign, it is preferable that the conduit be of sufcient size to accommodate two longitudinal rows of opposite lamp receptacles and lamps, the latter projecting oppositely and illuminating the panels upon both sides of the sign.
Each of the panels is provided with a longitudinal reverselv bent stiffening flange 6, the wiring conduit being preferably of `scpllared form in cross and 1 the stilfening flange of triangular form in cross sectipn, the lapping flanges 2 being suitably secured together r'byr rivets or the like, and the revversely bent stiffening flanges may have theirouten edges lapping the body of the .signpand suitably soldered or otherwise sccured thereto.
The ends of the stiffening flanges are beveled at 7, and an end section 8 is provided for each end of the sign, being of sheet metal of triangular form in cross section preferably and having opposite spaced inner edge portions 9, embracing the transverse margins of said panels, the end sections having beveled ends 10, matching the beveled ends of the stiffening flanges.
The resulting sign is designed to save labo-r and material, and the main body of the sign being composed of two identical interchangeable halves is economical to manufacture.
The end sections being slipped over the ends of the panels are suitably fastened to complete the sign.
I claim 1. In an` illuminated sign, twoy identical interchangeable panels located edge to edge in the same plane and having at their abutting edges a wiring conduit for a single row of lampl receptacles and lamps equidistant from and common to both panels.
2. In an illuminated sign, two identical interchangeable panels located edge to edge in the same plane and having at their abutting edges a wiring conduit equidistant from and common to both panels, and a single row of lamp receptacles and lamps carried by said conduit and common to and illuminating both panels.
3. In an illuminated sign, two identical interchangeable panels located edge to edge in the saine plane and having at their abutY ting edges a wiring conduit equidistant from and common to both panels, a single row of lamp receptacles and lamps carried by said conduit and common to and illuminating both panels, said panels having each an outer stilfening flange having beveled ends, and an end section having beveled ends and opposite spaced free edge portions fitting over and embracing each end of the simi.
b4. In an illuminated sign, two identical interchangeable panels located edge to edge in the same plane and having opposite outlamps carried by said conduit and common to and illuminating one side of both panels, and an oppositely projecting row of lamp receptacles and lamps carried by said conduit and common to and illuminat-V ing the other side of both panels.
5. ln an illuminated sign, two identical interchangeable panels located edge to edge in the same plane and having opposite out- Wardlf.v bent lapping flanges forming aconduit equidistant from and common to both panels, a single row of lamp receptacles and lamps carried by said conduit and common to and illuminating one side of both panels, and an oppositely projecting roxvfol' lamp receptacles and lamps carried by said conduit and common to and illuminating the other side of both panels, each panel having all Youter reversely bent stiffening flange provided with beveled ends, and end sections having beveled ends and embracing the ends of both panels. y
In testimony whereof l aHiX my signature.
