INCANDSCENT ELECTRIC LIGHTING.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CROMWELL A. B. HAL- voRSoN, .I r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Incandescent Electric Lighting, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to incandescent electric lighting, and more especially to 'sockets for supporting the incandescent lamp..-
When an incandescentlamp is used in conjunction with a parabolic reflector or a lens it is necessary in order to obtain the best results .that the source of light be positioned very accurately relative to the focus of the reiector or lens. On account of the variation in -incandescent lamps, especially as to the position of the filament relative to the axis of the base it has been heretofore recognized that each lamp required to be individually adjusted to bring its filament into proper focal relation.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved incandescent lamp socket which will permit a lamp connected therewith to be adjusted with facility by hand into any position and effectively held against displacement by vibration.
The form of my invention as shown in the accompanying drawing is particularly designed for use in projecters, flood lamps and automobile head lamps. Fig. l is a longitudinal sectional view of my improved socket with an incandescent lamp shown in position; Fig. 2 is a perspective view ofthe lamp engaging shell; Fig. 3 is a similar view of the spherical ring in which the lamp .engaging shell is secured; and Fig. 4 is a similar view of a part frictionally engaging the spherical ring.
The-lamp 1 shown in the drawing is of the A single contact type, having but one contact at the end of its base to which one end of its filament 3 is connected While the other end is connected to the cylindrical shell 4 which is provided with twodiametrically disposed holding pins 5.
The socket comprises an outercylindrical shell 6 with a spherical seat enlargement 'Z at its outer end and an insulating block 8 secured as by ins 9 in its inner end. In the hollow seat o the spherical enlargement 7 is fitted as by upsetting the `seat part thereover after assembly a universally adjustable ring 10 having a spherical outer.A surface which is frictionally pressed 'against vthe outer end of the spherical seatinthe provided with an inturned flange 14 to afford bearing surface for the end of thel spring 12.
The universally adjustable ring 10; carries Within it the inner socket shell 15 made of spring metal which is provided with the usual bayonet slots 16 for the reception of and locking engagement with the holding pins 5 of the lamp. The shell 15 is permanently attached to the ring 10 at their inner ends as by upsetting or soldering, and inorder that the lamp may be held from any tendency-to rock on its holding pins 5 the inner shell 15 is provided with spring vgripping fingers 17 made by longitudinally slotting the shell wall opposite a bayonet slotY 16 as at 18 and slightly deflecting the fingers toward the axis.
The center contact 19 is in the form of a headed bolt with nuts 20 thereon for binding the feed wire thereto. It passes freely through an axial bore in the insulating block 8 and at its headed end it is carried by. an insulating washer 23 which loosely engages at its periphery with the inner wall of the cylindrical end of the cup part 11. The outer end ofthe center contact 19 is provided with a spherical seat 21 substantially concentric with the universally adjustable ring 10. A helical spring 22 surrounds the shank of the center contact and thrusts at its ends against the insulating block 8 and the insulating washer 23 and operating thereby to force the contact 19 into yielding engagement with the contact 2 of the lamp.
In order to prevent swivelling on its axis of the universally adjustable ring 10 within its socket during insertion and removal of a lamp, it is provided with a radial pin 24 ico extending outwardly in a slot 25 cut longitudinally' in the wall of the spherical -enlargement 7 of the outer shell.
While I have shown and described herein the best embodiment o the invention known to me, I do not desire to be restricted thereto as it is apparent that changes and modiications can be made without departing from my invention.
What claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A lamp socket, comprising an outer shell provided with an internal seat, a unversally movable lamp engaging part disposed witliin said shell and adapted to frictionally and electrically contact with said seat, and a spring pressed part guided by the inner wall of said outer shell and exerting yielding pressure upon said lamp engaging part.
2. A lamp socket comprising a cylindrical outer shell provided at one end with an internal spherical seat, a spherical ring contacting with said seat and provided with lamp engaging means, a longitudinally movable part guided by the inner wall of said cylindrical shell and provided with a sperical bearing surface at its outer end for engagement with said ring, and a spring for yieldingly pressing said parts into friet-iena] engagement with each other.
3. A lamp socket comprising an outer shell having one end slotted and provided with an internal spherical seat, a spherical ring seated insaid outer shell and having an external projection disposed in the slot in said outer shell, a. lamp engaging shell secured within said ring, and a longitudinally movable spring pressed part bearing upon said ring and forcing it into frictional engagement with its seat'in said outer shell.
4'. A lamp socket comprising an outer shell provided at one end with an internal spherical seat and` at the other end with a barrier Wall, a universally movable lamp engaging part bearing upon said seat, a cupped part disposed in engagement with said lamp engaging partv opposite said spherical seat, a spring interposed between said cup part and said barrier wal1,.a center contact provided with a spherical contact seat, and an axial shank and a second spring surrounding said center contact shank and operating to yieldingly press said contact seat into engagement with the lamp base.
5. A lamp socket comprising a lamp engaging shell of spring metal having a bayonet slot, and an inwardly dellected gripping iinger formed therein between said slot and an adjacent longitudinal slot.
6. A lam socket comprising a lamp engaging cylinder having a bayonet slot in one side thereof and an inwardl directed spring finger opposite said slot an normally CROMWELL A. B. HALVORSON, Jr.
