Be it known that I, IRA It. SELTZER, a citizen of the United States, residing at l/Vaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Convertible Electric Cord Switches with Push-Through Control; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be aA full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in

This invention relates to an improved, convertible, electric cord switch with pushthrough control, the object being to provide a simple, convenient and reliable switch constructed with particular reference to convertibility for insertion into a parallel wire without-.removing the switch from the body of its case, but by cutting the wire, or, for
insertion into a cord by cutting only one of the parallel wires and by passing the other wire through the switch for which purpose the casing thereof must be removed.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in a switch having certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be herein described and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown, I employ a switch-unit comprising a one-piece base 10, of insulating material, formed with a deep recess 11, for the reception of a switch-mechanism of the rockertype and comprising a frame 12, push- buttons 13 and 14, united by a screw 15, rocker or actuator 16, a circuit-opening-and-closing member 17, and a spring 18 therefor. This switch-mechanism, which is well-kncwn and does not need detailed description, is secured within the base 10 by means of screws 19, countersunlr in recesses 20 in one end of the base 10.
A. plate 21, carrying a binding-screw 22, forms the terminal of one side of the switch and is located in a recess 23 in one face of the base, and held in place by a long screw 24, the head of which passes through and holds in place the spring contact linger 25 of the switch-mechanism, the said finger co acting with the contact ear 26 of the circuit opening-and-closing switchmember 17 already referred to; A complementary ear 26a, of the member '17, coacts with al complementary Vcontact-linger 25a, secured in place by being pinched between the base 10 and the inwardly-turned end 27 of a terminalv plate 28, the outer end of which is -bent outwardly and carries a binding-screw 29, which forms the terminal for the otherV side of the switch.
To provide for carrying the line current by theswitch, the base 10 is provided with a longitudinal peripheral groove 30, which adapts the switch-structure to be converted for use in either one or two ways as may be found most expedient. If it is desired to insert the switch in a cord without disassembling the switch by removing it from its cover or casing, which consists of a. body or shell 31, provided with an insulating lining 32,- and domical caps 33, having insulating linings 34 and insulating bushings 35, I may insert in the groove 30 an angular, main-line connecting-bar or part 36, carrying binding- screws 37 and 38, at its opposite ends, in the groove 30 and retained in place by its shape and by the entrance of its said bindingscrews into clearance-pockets 39 formed in the base therefor (Fig. 3.). The said main-line connecting-bar or part 36 comprises, in effect, a central member substantially corresponding in length to the groove 30, and provided at its ends with integral extensions standing at a right angle to its longitudinal axis and respectively carrying binding- screws 37 and 38. These extensions virtually embrace the opposite ends of the chambered cylindrical base l0 and prevent the longitudinal displacement of the bar 36 in the groove 30, in which it is held against lateral displacement by the said binding-screws and also by the lining 32 of the shell 31, which closes in the open side of kthe said groove. Then the part 36 is employed in the manner described, both of the parallel Wires of the cord are out and their ends attached to the terminal screws 22 and 38 at one end,
