CORNER CONSTRUCTION FOR METAL DOORS AND PARTITIONS.
Application-filed November 4, 1922. Serial No. 599,046.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAVE HILDING AN- DERSON, a citizen of the United States, and a. resident of New Britain, county. of Hartford, and State. of Connecticut, have invented certai'n new and useful Improvements in Corner Constructions for Metal Doors and Partitions, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to metallic building structures, and more particularly to an improved form of corner construction for the frames of hollow doors, windows, partitions, and building walls.
One object of the invention is to provide a. device of this nature which will be simple, strong, cheap to manufacture, and highly ef ficientand durable in use.
With this and other objects in view, there has been illustrated on the accompanying drawing one form, in which theinvention may be conveniently embodied in practice.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view illustrating the general appearance of a partition and door constructed in accordance with the invention.
In the manufacture of partitions and doors made up fromhollow metal frames, it has been customary in the past to build up said frames from-a plurality of metalstrips. According to the present invention, the door or partition may be constructed of box-like framesma'de from integral sheets, thus greatly facilitating the manufacture and lessening the cost of construction.
Referring now to the drawings in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numerals 10, 11, and 12 indicate three horizontal frame members or stiles of a partition, said stiles being connected by a pair of vertical uprights or stiles 13 and 14. The vertical stiles 13 and 14. together with an intermediate horizontal member 15 form a. door frame within which a door 15 is adapted to be hung. The door 15 is adapted to swing on hinges 16, 17, and 18, connected to the vertical partition stile 13, and the door stile 19, and is provided with the usual handle and lock on the opposite stile 19 of the door.
The construction of the upper left hand corner joint of the horizontal and vertical stiles of the door 15 will now be described.
Referring now to Figs 1, 2, and 3, the vertical stile 19, as'herein illustrated, comprises a hollow rectangular box-like frame having its inner'side 20 cut down at the top to a depth about equal to the Width of the upper stile 24. of said door. Itwill thus be evident that the top of the stile 19 is U-shaped in horizontal section, comprising side edges 21, 22, and a rear edge 23. The upper horizontal stile 24 of the door'is also box-shaped, and preferably of the same dimensions as the vertical stile 19. The left hand end of the upper horizontal stile 21 is cut away on the sides and bottom for a distance equal to the Width of the vertical stile 19, leaving a top overlapping section 25 which is adapted to lie flush with the edges 21, 22 of the stile 19 as more clearly shown in Fig. 1.
In order to ri idly connect the vertical and horizontal sti es 19 and 24, an L-shaped solid intermediate member 26 is provided having a vertical leg 27 and a horizontal leg 28. The horizontal leg 28 fits within the sides 21 and 22 of thevertical stile 19 and rests against the rear edge 23. The vertical leg 27 of the intermediate member, which is considerably thicker than the horizontal leg 28, is adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the inner side 20, and extends a short distance into the stile 24:.
In assembling the parts of the corner structure, it is only necessary to arrange the horizontal and vertical stiles 19 and 2 1 in the positions as shown in Fig. 1 with the solid insert 26 in the dotted line position. The stiles 19 and 24: are thenconnected to the intermediate member 26 in any suitable manner, preferablv by spot welding. In the present instance, the joint is made by means of a spot-welding machine which is applied to the sides of the corner at a series of points 31, 32, and 33. During the spot-welding operation, the current passes through the sides of the stiles and the intermediate member 26.
.It will be understood thatthe .above described corner construction may be applied to all four corners of the door frame. More over, thejoints at the corners of the door frame may be constructed in the same manner as the door-corner joints.
It will also be understood that the above construction is not to be limited to doors and door frames but may also be applied to metal windows, partitions, and building walls, within the spirit and scope of the invention.
One advantage of the present invention is that doors, door frames, windows, partitions, etc., may be very rapidly out together, and the structures so made will be quite strong and durable in use as well as attractive in appearance.
While there has been disclosed in this specification one form in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be limited to the specific disclosure, but may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claims.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent is:
1. In a corner construction for metal doors, windows, or other building frames, a hollow u right stile member, and a hollow horizonta rail member arranged at right angles to each other, an angular connectlng member having a pair of perpendicular arms, said arms fitting within said stile and rail members respectively, one of said arms being welded to said upright stile member, and the'other being welded to both of said members.
2. In a corner construction 'for' metal doors, windows, or other building frames, a pair of hollow frame members, said frame members being interfitted and rigidly secured together by means of a solid intermediate elbow member said elbow member having a pair of arms, one of said arms being secured to one of said hollow frame members, and the other arm beingsecured to both of said hollow frame members.

In a corner construction for metal doors, windows, or other building frames, a pair of hollow frame members, said frame members being rigidly secured .together by means of an intermediate elbow member said member having a pair of arms, one of said arms being welded to one of said hollow means of a so id intermediate elbow member located on the inside of said hollow frame members, to which each of said frame members is welded said elbow member having its apex spaced from the apex of the corner of said building frame.
5. In a corner construction for metal doors, windows, or other building frames, a pair of hollow frame members, said frame members being rigidly secured together by means of a solid intermediate elbow member to which each of said frame members is welded said elbow member having its apex spaced from the apex of the corner of said building frame. 6. A corner construction for the frames of a sheet metal door, artition, and the like, comprising a vertical hollow stile having its inner side cut away at the top, a horizontal hollow rail havin its sides and bottom cut away at the en adjacent the vertical stile, a solid elbow member adapted to connect and reinforce said vertical and horizontal stiles, said elbow member being located in the corner formed by said stile rail, said stiles being welded to said elbow member said elbow member having its apex spaced from the apex of the corner ofsaid building frame.
7. In a metallic door or construction, a pair of frames havin open ends arranged at ri ht an les to each other, a right angular so id L- Iiaped member fitted into the corner made by said transversely arranged frames, the legs of said L-shaped member being welded to the sides of said stiles the upper leg of said L-shaped member being located at the corner of said door construction.
8. A connectin member for the horizontal and vertical Iiollow frames of a metal door, comprising an L-shaped solid body of rectangular section having a relatively narrow horizontal 1e and a relatively thick vertical leg, said Iegs being ada ted to be welded to the front and rear si es of said horizontal and vertical stiles the upper leg of said L-sha ed body being located at the corner of sai door construction.
9. In a corner construction for metal doors, windows, or other building frames, a pair of hollow frame members arranged at an angle to each other, an L-shaped member adapted to connect said frames and located therewithin, said L-shaped member being arran ed with its apex spaced from the apex of sai frames.

11. In a corner construction for metal doors, windows or partitions, a pair of hollow frame members arranged with their ends in proximity and at an angle to each other, one of said frame members having an opening in its side in alinement with the other frame member, and a solid interior connecting elbow member fitted within said second named frame member and extending through said opening, said interior connecting member being welded to each of said frame members the extremity of one arm of said elbow member being located at the apex of said corner construction.
