Description

I S. L. BO LTBN. .Boundabouts.
Patentgd May 26, 1:874.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIGE,
SIMEON L. BOLTON, OF WESTMINSTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROUNDABOUTS Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 51,197, dated May 26, 1874; application filed March 25, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMEoN L. BoLToN, of Westminster, in the county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fandangoes or Roundabouts, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which-- Figure l is an isometrical perspective view of my improvement.
My invention relates to that class of fandangoes or roundabouts known as aquatic, or which are designed to be used in connection with water; and consists of a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which a new toy and healthful amusement is produced.
The extreme simplicity of my invention renders an elaborate description unnecessary.
In the drawing, A represents the pond or basin, in the center of which there is a vertical shaft or spindle, B, supported by, and fitted to rotate in, the step H by means ofthe gears D E and crank F. Projecting horizontally from the shaft B are four arms, 0 G U C, and midway between each two of the arnis there is a boat, G, provided with a painter or chain at its bow and stern, by which it is attached to the outer ends of the adjoining arms, as shown.
From the foregoing the nature and operation of my invention will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters.
The pond or tank A being filled with water, the boats will be caused to float, and when the crank F is turned will sail around the pond in a manner which will be readily obvious to all,
When used as a toy, small images repre senting men and animals may be placed in the boats, which will heighten the amusement; but my improvement is designed principally for use at summer resorts and in parks, in act= ual ponds of water, or artificial ponds of considerable size, and with boats of sufficientcapacity to carry real men and women, in which case I usually construct a circular cotter-dam in the pond to take the place of the rim of the basin A, but this may be omitted without de= parting from the spirit of my invention. The object of the cotter-dam is to render the pro pulsion of the boats easier, the rotary movements of the same communicating circular motion to the water inclosed by the dam, so that after one or two voyages around the pond but little power will be required to operate the mechanism.
It will be understood that the shaft of the crank F is to be extended to the shore, and a walk orwharf built to obtain access to they fandango -or roundabout, when the same is") erected in a pond, as described. 7
Having thus described my invention, What a I claim is- 1. The aquatic fandango or roundabout scribed, consisting of the boats G G and shaft B, provided with the arms 0 0; gears D E, and crank F, combined and arranged to 0perate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the subject-matter of the above claim, the basin or coder-dam A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
SIMEON L. BOLTON.
