Description

Patented Mag/19,1874.
A.T1TLOW.
Land-Rollers.
)I'IIIIIIH IHHIHHMN r -llllll NITED STATES PATENT CFFICE.
AARON TITLOV, 0F PITTSBURG, INDIANA.
IMPRovEMENT |N LAND-RoLLERs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,174, dated May 19, 1874; application filed January 29, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON TITLOW, of Pittsburg, in the county of Carroll and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Field-Rollers; and I do hereby declare that the following lis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specication.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a land or field roller, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. A
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a plan View, and Fig. 2 is a central section through line a: fr, Fig. l.
A A represent the main shafts or axles, which are made square and provided with a round journal, a, at each end. The roller is made in two halves- 013 in other words, two rollers are placed on the axle A-each composed of a series of round disks, B B, made of plank, with a square hole in the center, to slip on the axle. 0n each side of the series of wooden disks B is placed a cast-iron disk or pla-te, C, which has also a square hole in the center to slip over the axle. These plates C O are keyed upon the axle, and screw-rods b b `pass through them and the wooden disks B, to
bolt them firmly together. E represents the tongue, to each side of which is bolted a rod, D. Each rod D bends out in front of the roller, then passes backward to the journal a of the axle, the journal fitting in the rod. The rod then passes backward for a suitable distance,
bearing oft' from the roller,v after which it curves gradually upward and toward the roller. The inner journal of each shaft or axle A is placed in a boxing, d, attached to the tongue E. From the boxes d the rear end of the tongue curves upward in the samemanner as the side rods D. l), and a rod, G, is passed through said curved ends of the tongue an-d rods, and fastened by nuts x m at each end, as
shown. H represent-s the spring for support` ing the drivers seat. It is fastened to the under side of the tongue E, and follows the curve thereof, and then bends over the top and runs forward, as shown.
This landroller is simple in construction, and cheap to manufacture. It pulverizes the earth well, and is easy of draft, and it is not liable to break in running over stumps and stones. Very often, a roller running over a small stump, the tongue will liy up, and the frame will then catch on the stump. By the curve in the tongue and side rods, this diflicu'lty is entirely obviated.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The rollers B B, disks C C, side barsv D D, rod G, and tongue E, when all are constructed and arranged as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence Ot' two witnesses.
AARON TITLOY.
