This invention relates to machines for working uppers overlastsand is herein 1llustrated in its application to a machine for pulling over uppers and for fastening them in pulled-over posit-ion, although in many of its aspects the invention is not limited to pulling-over machines Among. its important features, the invention provides novel-means for presenting a .fastener for use in an upper fastening operation. As applied toa construction having a fastener carrier mounted forniovement from an initial retracted position toward fastener inserting position and for additional fastener transferring movement, the inventionin its illustrative embodiment provides means for imparting to the carrier such fastener transferring movement While it is in its retracted position. In the construction shown each fastener inserting device is provided with a fastener carrier which moves with it toward and from. fastener inserting position and is additionally movable into position to receivea fastener at a point of delivery and into position to present the .iastener in the path of movement of the fastener driver while the fastener inserting device is in its retracted position. The invention also provides. a novel and improved construction of controlling.nieans, the machine shown :having :a simple. and effective construction and arrangement [of starting and stopping mechanism designed particularly for use in an organization in which the operating connections comprise different shafts disposed in angular relation to each other. Important advantages of the novel controlling mechanism are to be recognized in the application of the invention to a machine of the type illustrated in the prior patent above mentioned comprising an upwardly extending cam shaft connected to a substantially horizontal driving shaft. Included also in the illustrative machine, as a further novel feature, is means enabling the operator in his working position in front of the machine to release the brake without setting the clutch, thus per mitting the machine to be turned manually through more or less of its operating cycle. In order to permit the operator to view readily the different operating instrumentalie ties as the machine is turned through its cycle manually, the invention also provides means which may be manipulated to turn the machine while the operator is in his normal working position in front of the machine, such means in the illustrative con struction comprising a hand wheel mounted at the side of the machine and connected to the upwardly extending cam shaft. Combined with the means at the front of the machine for use in releasing the brake without setting the clutch, this arrangement for operating the machine manually permits a shift from power operation to man ual movement of the parts, or vice versa, while the operator is in his normal working position. Still another feature of the invention .consists in a novel organization whereby a substantial portion of the operating mechanism of a shoe machine may be moved from its normal position into a different position in order, for example, to hicilitate adjustments or repairs, In the construction shown the shoe rest, the upper pulling and fastening lIiSiJIUlhGlltEtlltlBS, and the upwardly extending cam shaft are mounted on a support which may be swung into position to present the cam shaft substantially horizontally, thus affording the operator convenient access to the interior of the machine while permitting a substantial portion of the structure to be normally inclosed in a casing for safety and for the purpose of excluding dirt from the interior of the ma chine. It is also a novel and advantageous characteristic of the construction shown that the means provided for turning the machine manually is operative in either position of the movable support.
Since the invention, as above stated, is herein shown as embodied in the type of machine shown and described in said prior patent and described more fully as to many of its characteristic features in numerous gsiosai prior United States Letters Patent including, for example, Patent No. 1,029,38'l', granted on June 11, 1912, upon application of ii. McFeely, the general organization of the machine, in so far as it is not modified for purposes of the present invention, will be described only briefly, and for a more complete understanding of the details of the construction reference may be made to said prior patents.

Similarly to the machine shown and de scribed in the prior patent first above men tioned, the machine herein shown ls provided with a sole rest 2 and a heel rest l which position the last and the shoe bottom downward with the toe end of the shoe pointing upwardly and away from the operator to present the top of the forepart in full view of the operator as he stands in his normal working position. The shoe as thus mounted is substantially over the upper end of a substantially upright cam shaft 6 which carries the cams whereby movements are imparted to the different operating instrumen'talities. For pulling the upper the machine is provided with a toe gripper 8 and with opposite side grippers one of which is seen at 10 in Fig. l, the toe gripper and the side grippers being connected respec tively to levers 12 and 14 which may be conveniently termed updraw levers. Upper pulling movement is imparted to the lever by a cam 16 on the cam shaft 6 through a cam slide 18 and a yielding spring connection 20., and similar movement is imparted to the side updraw levers by a cam 22.. through a cam slide 2d and yielding spring connections it will be understood that, under the control of mechanism to be hereinafter described, upper pulling movement is imparted to the grippers through a partial rotation of the cam shaft, whereupon the machine comes automatically to rest with the upper held under tension to permit such adjustment of the tension and of the lines of the upper on the last as the operator may observe to be necessary. Upon a subsequent starting of the machine opposite side clamp arms 28 are swung inwardly into supporting and clamping engagement with the shoe, and either imniediately, or following asecond stop in the operation of the machine, operative movements are imparted to the means whereby the margin of the upper is overlaid and fastened on'the bottom of the last. The overlaying and fastening means comprises 'a'toe tacker arm 30 and side tacker arms 32 which are mounted for swinging movement toward and from the shoe under the control of mechanism including a slide bar 34, these arms being severally provided with fastener inserting devices comprising driver bars '36 and tack drivers 37. It will be understood that by the inward movement of tl'ie'arms 30 and 32 the margin of the upper is wiped inwardly over the bottom face of the sole or insole and the grippers are tripped to release the upper, and that at the end of :such inward movement of the arms the driver bars 36 are operated to drive the tacks, whereupon the arms 30 and 32 and other parts of the machine are returned to starting position, as more fully illustrated 'and described in said prior patents.
Similarly also to themachine shown in said patents, the machine herein shown is :provided'with tack supplying means comprising a rotatable tackpot38 and a tack sepa r'ator indicated generally at 40 in Fig. 1, these parts receiving operative movement from an eccentric 42 on the cam shaft 6 through a link 44 connected to one arm of abell-crank lever 46the other arm of which 'is connected to a vertical :rod 48- which through rack and pinion mechanism serves to OSClllEItB tlIG' tack pot. It'willbe understood that in operation, as in prior machines of the general type'illustrated, downward movement is imparted to the rod 48 in the first stage of the cycle and that the rod receives its return upward movement in the final stage of the cycle following a subsequent starting of the machine. i
From the tack separator .40 the tacks are conducted to the track driving mechanisms by means including-readily detachable tack "tubes 50 which, as in the construction shown in the first'mentioned patent. extend upwardly from the separator and then clownwardly to cause the tacks to beinverted and delivered point upward. The number oi the tack tubes 50 corresponds to the number of tacks to be driven at eachoperation, the machine shown being adapted to drive a single tack at the end of the toe and two tacks at each side of the forepart. For

ed at its outerv end to a lever 62 fulcrumed at 64 on the column 41 and having a pin and slot connection at 66 with the vertically mova ble rod 48.. At its inner end the pieton rod 60 is provided with a lug 68in hook over a pin 70 in the piston 54:, as indicated in Fig. l, the rod beingheld normally in thepositionthere indicated by means of a leaf spring 72 between one of the rod and a parti on the piston. When downward movement is imparted to the rod 45 in the first stage of the cycle the lever is swung towardthe left (Fig l) and through the rod 60. pulls the piston outwardly against the resistance of the spring 56, air being admitted to the interior of the cylinder through a suitable check valve not herein shown. Toward the end of the operative movement of thexlever 62- a cam shaped lug 76 on the piston rod engagesan 'adjustablescrei'v 78 and lateral movement is thereby iinpartedto the rod against the resistance of the spring 72 in such manner as to disconnect "its lug: 68 from thepin '70, whereupon thespring 56 acts to impel the piston into the. cylinderv and thereby to force a blast of air against the severaltacks in linewith the tack tubes 50 tololow the tacks into and through the tubes.
When the rod 4L8 receives its return upward movement in the final stage of the cycle the piston-rod 60is movedreversely to its starting position and its lug 68 is re-engaged with the: pin 570.

To receive: thetacks from the tubes and to carry them into driving position the tacker arms 30 and 32 are provided with tack carriers 84 mounted on pivotsv86'to eacliof the tack carriers is locked in drivinrror tack presenting position, as indicated in Fig. 3, by means of a pawl orlatch 88 which is pivoted on. the tacker arm and engages a projection 90 on the carrier to hold the latter against an abutment (not shown) on the t acker arm. The pawl 88 is normally held in its operative position by means of a spring plunger 92 the locking means being thus effective during the in ward movement of the tacker arms toward the shoe and their outward return movement. When the arms arrive at their outermost position the outer ends of the pawls 88 are carried into engagement with adjustable stop screws 94 whereby they are swung about their pivots to disengage them from the projections 90 and to unlock the tack carriers. At this point, however the several carriers are subjected to the control of additional mechanism comprising gear segments 96 pivotally mounted on the brackets 82 and connected together by means of lever arms 98 and links 100, these gear segments being arranged to engage cooper ating gear segments 102 formed on the outer ends of the different respective tack carriers. The gear segment 96 at the right hand side of the machine is fast on a rock shaft 104: on which is; also mounted a larger segment 106 in engagement with a. cooperating gear segment 108 formed on an upright rock shaft 110 provided with an arm 112 on which is a roll 114E engaging in a cam groove 116 formed in a cam disk 118 on the cam shaft 6. The cam groove 116 is so disposed as to operate the gear segment 108 and its connected mechanism in the first stage of the cycle of operations of the machine to swing the several tack carriers 8% into tack receiving position under the delivery ends of the tack tubes in time to receive the tacks blown through the tubes by the action of the pneumatic means hereinbefore described. The tack carriers are held in this position by the operating mechanism during the pause in the cycle following the pulling of the upper, the tacks thus having time to settle in the carriers before they are moved to driving position. In the second stage of the cycle, be fore the tacker arms begin their inward swinging movement reverse movement is imparted to the tack carriers by the action of the cam 116 and its connected mechanism to carry the tacks into driving position. and as the tacker arms begin their inward movement the pawls 88 are released to the action of the spring plungers 92 and immediately become effective to lock the carriers in the manner hereinbefore explained before the gear teeth are disengaged. It will be understood that in Fig. 3 a point in the cycle is indicated wherein the tacker arms are in an intermediate position in the course of their outward return movement after the operations on a shoe have been completed.
The construction of the tack carriers is illustrated more in detail in Figs. l and 6 which show one of the two carriers that operate at opposite sides of the shoe. it will be seen that the carrier is provided with tack pockets 120 for alinement with the delivery tubes and with the tack drivers in the different respective positions of the carrier, the lower ends ofthese pockets being normally closed by oppositely movable plates 122 and 12% .which are normally pressed together by a spring 126 and are forced apart in opposite directions by the tack drivers in the operative movement of the drivers. Mounted on each of th tacker arms 80 and 32 to extend over and close the upper ends of the tack pockets 120 when the carriers are in driving position are oppositely movable plates 128 and 130 similar to the plates 122 and 124C and similarly controlled by a spring 132 to permit them to be forced apart in opposite directions by the pressure of the tacks and of the tack drivers.
For imparting operative movement to the cam shaft 6 the machine is provided with a horizontal driving shaft 134; mounted in bearings in the base 136 of the machine and extending rearwardly from the cam disc 118. this disc being provided with a beveled gear 138 for engagement with a beveled pinion 140 on the shaft 134. On its rear end the shaft 134; carries a belt driven pulley 142 mounted to turn idly on the shaft except when connected thereto by clutch mechanism. Keyed to the shaft 134 to rotate therewith and to slide lengthwise thereon is a clutch member 144 to which is fastened a ring 146 having on its rear side an external coneface adapted to engage an internal cone face formed on a co-operating clutch ring 14-8 on the pulley 142. The ring 146 has on its front side a flange 150 arranged to engage a co-operating brake flange on a stationary bracket member 152 which is fast on the base. To force the clutch member 146 into engagement with the member 148 the machine is provided with springs 15 1 which tend to force the member 1 14: toward the left (Fig. 1).
For controlling the clutch, the member 144 is provided with an annular groove 156 in which is a ring 158 having trunnions extending into the arms of a forked lever 160 which is pivoted at its upper end on the member 152 and is connected by a rod 162 to controlling mechanism at the front of the machine. Fast on the front end of the rod 162 is a controlling member 164 which is yieldingly upheld by a spring plunger 166. On the upper face of the member 16 i is a block 168 arranged to be engaged by a block 170 on the lower end of a brake lever 172. The lever 172 is pivoted on a bracket 174 and is provided at. its upper end with a ball projection to engage in plate 168 when the treadle is the parts of the clutch and apply the brake.
For starting'the machine, the controlling member 164 is arranged to be pulled down wardly by a link 178 which passes through a-slot inthe member 164 and carries a wear plate 180 to hook over the end of the block.

Upon such depression the member 164 its block 168 is released from the block 170 on the brake lever and the springs 154 are then permitted to act to release the brake and to set the clutch and,
start the machine. As the member 164 is thus moved toward the left (Fig. 1) its block 168 is carried out of engagement with the wear plate 180 on the link178, whereupon the spring plunger 166 acts to force the member 164 upwardly as far as permitted by the block 170 on the brake lever. It Will be understood that by the action of the cam 176 the brake lever 172 is moved into position to engage the end faceot the block 168 and then to impart a return movement toward the right to the member 164 for re leasing the clutch and applying the brake" at the end of each stage of the cycle of oper-- ations of the machine. If at. the time ot' such return movement of the controlling member 164 the treadle 182 has not been re leased to permit its link 178 to rise into position for operative connection with the con: trolling member, thelink is-pushed back by the member 164 against a spring plunger 188 which serves to swing the link into position for its wear plate 180 to project over the eventually released. In consequence of this arrangement the treadle must be fully raised before the clutch can again be tripped.
The. machine is also provided with mechanism for controlling the clutch and the brake topermit the operator, if he so desires. to release the brake without setting the clutch. For this purpose there is pivotally mounted on the ba Q of the machine. a lever 190 having a projecting lug,1 92 to be moved. for exan iple by the operators foot, into orout of the path of movement of a lug 194 on the front end portion of the controlling member 164. Theselugs are so arranged as to permitthe controlling member, upon depression of the treadle 'to be moved far enough by the springs 154 to release the brake but not far enough to carry the clutch member 146 .is desired to turn the machine over by hand.

2. In a machine of the class described, the combination with means for working an upper over a last, of means for fasten ing the upper comprising a fastener carrier mounted for movement from an initial retracted position toward fastener inserting; position and for additional fastener transferring movement, and mechanism for im parting to said carrier its fastener transferring movement comprising: connections arranged to be broken by the movement of the carrier toward fastener inserting position.
3. In a machine of the class described, the combination with means for workin t an upper over a last, of means for fa the upper con'iprising a fastener carrie' mounted for movement from an initial rctra'cted position toward fastener insertii'ig position and for additional fastener trans ferring movement, mechanism for imparting to said carrier its fastener transferring movement comprising connections arranged to be broken by the movement of the carrier toward fastener inserting): position and a device automatically operative to lock the carrier when said connections are broken.
4. In a. machine of the class described, the combination with means for working); an upper over a last, of means for fastening the upper comprising a fastener inserting; device movable from an initial retracted position toward fastener inserting; position prior to its fastener inserting movement. a fastcner carrier mounted for movement with the fastener inserting device between said different positions and also for movement in a different direction and relatively to said device from a fastener receiving position into position to present a fastener for the inserting o-l ieration, and mechanism for imparting to said carrier its fastener presentin n'iovement while the fastener insertinf? device is in its retract-ed position. 7
5. In a. machine of the class described, the coi'nbination with means for working an upper over a last, of means for fastening the upper comprisinga fastener inserting; device movable from-an initial retracted position toward fastener --insertii'ng' position prior to its fastener inserting movement, a fastener carrier mounted for movement with the fastener inserting device between said different positions and also for swinging movement relatively to said device between a fastener receiving position and a position for present inga fastener for the inserting operation, and mechanism automatically operative while said fastener inserting device is in retracted position to move said carrier into fastener receiving position and subsequently into fastener presenting position.
6. In a machine of the class described, the combination with means for working an upper over a last, of means for fastening the upper comprising a tacker arm mounted for movement toward and from the shoe and provided with a tack driver, a tack carrier mounted on said arm for movement between a tack receiving position and a position for presentinga tack in operative relation to said driver. and mechanism automatically operative while saidtacker arm is in its retracted position away from the shoe to move said carrier into tack receiving position and subsequently into tack presenting: position.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with means for working an upper over a last, of means for fastening the upper comprising; a. tacker arm mounted for movement toward and from the shoe an d provided with a tack driver, means for do liver-inn a tack adjacentto the path of movement of said arm, a tack carrier mounted on said arm for movement in opposite direc tions alternately into position to receive a tack as thusdelivered and into position to present the tack in alinement with the driver, and mechanism automatically opera tive independently of said movement of the tacker arm to move the tack carrier in said d i iferent directions.

In a machine of the class described the combination with means for pulling an upper over a last, of means for fastening the upper comprising tacker arms mounted for movements respectively lengthwise and laterally of the shoe into and out of position for fastening the upper atthe toe end and a t opposite sides of the shoe, tack carriers mounted on said tacker arms for movements relatively to said arms alternately into tack receiving; position and into position to pre sentthe tacks for the tack driving operation, each of said carriers being provided with gear teeth, co-operating gears arranged to engage the gear teeth of the different rcspective carriers when the tacker arms are in their retracted positions away from the shoe, and mechanism for operating said different gears simultaneously to impart tack transferring movements to said carriers.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with upper pulling means constructed to pull an upper in one stage of the cycle of the machine and to come auto matically to rest with the upper held under tension, of means operative in a different stage of the cycle upon a subsequent starting of the machine to fasten the upper, said fastening means comprising a fastener in serting device mounted for movement from initial retracted position toward fastener inserting position prior to its fastener inserting movement, a fastener carrier mounted for movement with said fastener inserting device between said different positions and also for movement relatively to said device between a fastener receiving position and a fastener presenting position, and operating mechanism for moving said carrier into fastener receiving position in the upper pulling; stage of the cycle and into fastener presenting position inthe upper fasteningstage of the cycle.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with upper pulling means constructed to pull an upper in one stage of the cycle of the machine and to come automatically to rest with the upper held under tension, of means operative in a different stage of the cycle upon a subsequent starting of the machine to fasten the upper, said. fastening means comprising a fastener insorting device mounted for movement from an initial retracted position toward fastener inserting position prior to its fastener insorting movement, means for delivering a fastener adjacent to the path of movement of said device in the upper pulling stage of the cycle a fastener carrier arranged to receive the combination with upper pulling means constructed to pull-an upper over a last in one stageof the cycle of the machineand to come automatically to rest with the upper held under tension, of fastening means operative in a different stage of the cycle upon a subsequ-entstarting of themachine todrive upper securing fasteners, and pneumatic means automatically operative in the upper pulling. stage of vthecycle to deliver fasteners to vsald fastening means.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with means for pulling an upper over a last positioned bottom downward, and means for driving fasteners upwardly into the shoe, of mechanism for imparting operative movements to said upper pulling and fastener driving means comprising a cam shaft extending upwardly substantially under the shoe and a driving shaft connected to said cam shaft and extending rearwardly in a substantially horizontal direction, a clutch and a brake at the rear end of said driving shaft, and mechanism operated by said cam shaft for releasing the clutch and applying the brake at a determinate time in the cycle of operations.
34. In a machine of the class described, the combination with means for pulling an upper over a last, and means for fastening the upper, of mechanism for imparting operative movements to said upper pulling and upper fastening means comprising a cam shaft and a driving shaft connected together and disposed in angular relation to each other, a clutch and a brake associated with said driving shaft, a controlling member movable in one direction to release the brake and set the clutch and in the opposite direction to release the clutch and apply the brake. a spring for imparting said first named movement to the controlling member, a device operated by said cam shaft to impart movement in the opposite direction to said member to stop the machine, and manual means for disconnecting the controlling member from said device to release it to the action of the spring and start the machine.
35. In a machine of the class described, the combination with means for pulling an upper over a last and means for fastening the upper, of mechanism for imparting operative movements to said upper pulling and upper fastening means comprising an upwardly extending cam shaft and a substantially horizontal rearwardly extending driving shaft geared to said cam shaft, a clutch and a brake at the rear end of said driving shaft, controlling mechanism comprising a controlling member extending forwardly from said clutch and brake, a spring for moving said member rearwardly to set the clutch and release the brake, a lever operated by said cam shaft for imparting forward movement to said member to re lease the clutch and apply the brake, and treadle means for disconnecting the controlling member from said lever to release the member to the act-ion of said spring.
36. In a machine of the class described. the combination with means for pulling an upper over a last and means for fastening the upper, of mechanism for imparting operative movements to said upper pulling and upper fastening means comprising a cam shaft and a driving shaft disposed in angular relation to each other, a clutch associated with said driving shaft, 2 controlling member extending from said clutch, a power operated member for engaging said controlling member and holding it nor mally in clutch releasing position, and a treadle operated link arranged to hook over said controlling member and disconnect it from said power operated member for starting the machine.
37. In a machine of the class described, the combination with means for pulling an upperover a last and means for fastening the upper, of mechanism for imparting operative movements to said upper pulling and upper fastening means comprising an upwardly extending cam shaft and a sub stantially horizontal rearwardly extending driving shaft geared to said cam shaft, a brake and a clutch at the rear end of said driving shaft, controlling mechanism comprising a member extending forwardly from said brake and cl utch, a lever normally operative to hold said controlling member in a forward position with the clutch released and the brake applied, a tripping device to disconnect the controlling member from. said lever, spring means for forcing said member rearwardly to set the clutch and release the brake, and mechanism for operating said lever subsequently to impart reverse movement to said member to stop the machine.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with means for pulling an upper over a last and means for fastening the upper, of mechanism for imparting operative movements to said upper pulling and upper fastening means,- clutch and brake mechanism for starting and stopping the machine, manual means for normally controlling said clutch and brake mechanism, and additional controlling mechanism arranged to be manipulated by the operator in his normal working position in front of the machine to enable him "to release the brake without setting the clutch.

In a machine of the class-described, the combination with means for pulling an upper over a last and means for fastening the upper, of mechanism for imparting operative movements to said upper pulling and upper fastening means comprisingan upwardly extending camshaft and a substantially horizontal 'rearwardly extending driving shaft geared to said cam shaft, a clutch and a brake at therear end of said driving shaft, controlling mechanism comprising a member extending forwardly from said clutch and brake and arranged to be tripped manually to cause it to move in one direction to release the brake and then to set the clutch, and a device at the frontof the machine movable at the will of the operator into position to prevent said member from moving far enough to set the clutch while permitting it to move a sufficient distance to release the brake.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with upper pulling and fastening devices, and operating mechanism comprising a cam shaft, of a support for said upper pulling and fastening devices and cam shaft mounted: for movement to present the parts in an abnormal position for inspection, and means connected to said cam shaft to enable the operator to turn said shaft manually while the parts are in said abnormal position.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with upper pulling and fastening devices, and operating mechanism comprising an upwardly extending cam shaft, of a support for said upper pulling and fastening devices and cam shaft mounted, for swinging movement to present the part with the cam shaft substantially horizontal, a clutch controlled driving shaft, and a gear connection between said cam shaft and driving shaft arranged to be broken by the movement of said support to its abnormal position.

a tacker arm movable toward and from the' shoe, a tack carrier movable on said arm between tack receiving position and tack presentmg position, means for imparting tack transferring movement to said carrier when the arm is in retracted position away from the shoe comprising intermeshing gear teeth arranged to be disconnected by movement of the arm toward the shoe, a latch carried by the arm for holding the carrier in tack presenting position when said teeth are disconnected, and automatic means for operating said latch to release the carrierv after said teeth have been connected by return movement of the arm.
64. In a machine of the class described,
the combination with pulling-over means, of a tacker arm movable toward and from the shoe, a tack carrier movable on said arm between tack receiving position and tack presenting position, a pawl on the arm for locking the carrier in tack presenting p osition, and a stop into engagement with which said pawl is carriedby movement of the arm away from the shoe for releasing thecarrier.
