Definitions
- This invention relates to that class of processes where the material is immersed in a prepared solution, so as to thoroughly saturate the same; and its consists of a solution of tannin of lent-isk, (Lentz'cico lentiscua) or other tannic acids.
- the wood to be preserved is first immersed in the above solution, and remains long enough to thoroughly saturate the same.
- the degree of acidity will vary according to the nature of the material operated upon. When used at a high temperature the wood should not remain immersed more than thirty minutes.
- the Wood having been thus prepared must then be subjected to an injection of acetate of iron, which operation is performed by an injecting apparatus used for such purposes. This causes the formation of tannate of iron in all the pores or cellules of the wood, and thus prepares the material to become imputrescible for an indefinite length of time, although being subjected to the various temperatures or hygrometrlcal changes.

Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FIRMIN DUFOURG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PROCESSES FOR PRESERVING WOOD.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,841, dated May 1'2, 1874 application tiled March 19, 1874.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1,]?IRMIN DUFOURC, of New York city, State of New York, have invented an Improved Process for Preserving Wood, of which the followingis a specification: This invention relates to that class of processes where the material is immersed in a prepared solution, so as to thoroughly saturate the same; and its consists of a solution of tannin of lent-isk, (Lentz'cico lentiscua) or other tannic acids. The wood to be preserved is first immersed in the above solution, and remains long enough to thoroughly saturate the same.
The degree of acidity, as Well as the temperature, will vary according to the nature of the material operated upon. When used at a high temperature the wood should not remain immersed more than thirty minutes. The Wood having been thus prepared must then be subjected to an injection of acetate of iron, which operation is performed by an injecting apparatus used for such purposes. This causes the formation of tannate of iron in all the pores or cellules of the wood, and thus prepares the material to become imputrescible for an indefinite length of time, although being subjected to the various temperatures or hygrometrlcal changes.
By operating and preparing the wood by this process it also greatly increases its hardness and imparts to it a darker color.
I claim as my invention- The preserving of wood by saturating with a solution of tannin of lentisk, or other tannic acids, and injecting the pores or cellules with acetate of iron, substantially as described.
FIRMIN DUFOURC.
