Be it known that I, MARK L. FRANKLIN, a citizen of Dominion of Canada, residing at Owen Sound, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Irons, of which the following 1s a specification. Y Y
This invention relates to attachments for electric irons and has vision of an automatic thermostatic control switch or circuit breaker designed for association with any already exist iron and actin automatically to break the circuit and cut o the current supply to the iron in case the temperature thereof reaches an excessive point which might result in scorch' the clothes being pressed or ironed, the evice automatically reclos the circuit when the temprature is redu by cooling.

This shellis adapted to receive a terminal plug 19 containing contacts adapted to engage the posts 17 and 18. The feed wire H of the current supply line is brought into the plug G in the usual manner, while the wire I is brought down and connected with the contact w ich engages the post 17, the contact engaging the post 18 having connected therewith a wire 20 which is brought into the plug G and connected with one of the contacts therein. In this way it will be seen that the contacts inthe plug 19 are interposed in series with one of the feed wires, so that the thermostatic control device is' in series with the heating coil C as indicated in the diagram shown in Figure 4. Within the casing 10 is a base 21 of insulating material held in place by screws 22 or the ike, and secured upon this base is a bowed metallic strip 23 having its ends anchored as shown at'24 and 25. Connected with the binding screw 25 is a stri or wire 26 which lies against the lining ci) which is connected with the post 18. Rising from the base or block 21 is a threaded post 29 formed with an enlar ement whlch is embedded in thebase, an connected with this enlargement is a strip 28 leading to and secured-to the post and adj ustably engaged upon the u per end of the post 29 is a socket member 2 which constitutes a Acontact normally enga g the underside of the bowed strip 23 tliis socket member is split as shown in Figure 5 whereby it will frictionall grip the post and not be accidentally jarre so as to turn when suchis not desired. By adjusting this socket member 27 it is vobvious that the sensitiveness of the thermostat may be regulated. It is of course apparent that when the contact 27 'engages the owed leaf or strip the support is c osed through the heatin coil C of the iron.
In operation it will be apparent 'that the iron until the latter has cooled oft'- .to 'a certain extent, at which time the strip 23 will contact and be 'bowed less abruptly so 'that it will again engage the contact 27.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
`1. In an electric iron, a thermostatic control device comprising a metallic casing adapted to be mounted upon the iron, a block of insulating material within the casing, a bowed metallic strip anchored at its ends upon said block, an attaching shell at one end of he casing, a plug therein, a pair or-terimal posts extending through said plug, one post being connected with one end of said strip, a contact connected with the other post and extending within the bottom portion of the block, and a contact normally engaged by the strip and connected with said first named contact.
