Filed ldar'ch 9. 1923l Patented Sept. 9, 1924 MARION A. DOWNES, WEST ROXBURY, MASSACHUSETTS.
GAME.
Application led March 9, 1923. Serial No. 623,963..
To all fr0/tom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, MARION A. DowNns, a
citizen of the United States, and a residentv lowing description, in connection with they accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
My invention relates to a game and particularly though not exclusively to one to be used in connection with phonographs.
My invention will be best understood from the following description when read in light ofthe accompanying drawings showing one specific embodiment of my inven tion selected for illustrative purposes, while the scope of my invention will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Fig. 1 shows an elevation of the submitted embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 with parts omitted; and
Figs. 3, t and 5 show details. t
Referring to the drawings I'have in dicated the phonograph at 1, this type of 1nstrument as will be understood being provided with a turntable 3 which supports a sound producing record 5, the turntable being supported on a mandrel 7 which projects above the turntable and centers the reco-rd therewith.
Above the record I have shown a base member 9 having a supporting plate 11 which projects beyond the member 9 so as to form an annular tiange. As indicated in Figs. 2 and 5 the flange portion of the plate 11 is provided with openings 13 through which extend pins 15 rotatively supporting the spherical rollers 17. The plate 11 and base member 9 are provided with an `axial opening 19 which receives the upper end of the mandrel 7 so as to center the base with the record. The rollers 17 rest upon the record and thereby permit relative rotation between the record and the base 9.
Carried upon the base `I provide a target support which as herein shown consists of the four radiating vanes 21, these vanes being shaped in the semblance of a tree for which the base 9 provides the trunk. For accentuating the illusion when the vanes are painted to represent branches and foliage y each vane is provided with the openings 23.
Preferably I make the vanes 21 and base member 9 and its plate 11 of light weight material, as for example cardboard. The four vanespreferably are made from the two sheets indicated in Figs. 3 and 4, that shown in Fig. 3 having the slot 25 extending downwardly from the top` of the sheet and that shown in Fig. 4t having the slot 27 extending upwardly from the botto-m of the sheet. This, as will be understood by those skilled Vin the art, permits the sheets to be readily assembled` with relation to each other in the position shown by Figs. 1 and 2. `The upper portion of the base member 9 as indicated by Figs. `1 and 2 is provided with diametrical slots at right angles to each other which slots receive the fourvanes 21 so as to holdy the vanes and base member 9 in assembled relation. The bearing support 1.7 being located at separated points and below the center of gravity ofthe device, the latter is provided with a lirmand substantial support. e
In operation the frictional resistance of the rollers turning on their pins exerts a force tending to rotate the base 9with the record, while the vanes 21 meeting with air resistance tend to resist rotation, this resistance increasingwith the speed, and in consequence the base 9 rotates at a much slower speed than the record, and by suitably proportioning the parte to vary the air resistance or friction or both the vanes may be` made to rotate at any desired speed relatively to therecord. The vanes form a convenient support for targets herein indicated by figures of birds 29 which are provided with weighted tails 31 and a notch 33 allowing the figures to be loos-ely mounted or perched upon the vanes.
Although I have described for purposes of illustration one specific embodiment'.l of my invention it is to be understood that I am not limited thereby 'to its particular mechanical details, but that within the scope of my invention wide deviations may be made therefrom without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Claims:
