UNITED STATES HENRY J. vn'rtrnn, or nnw YORK, N. Y.
BOOK HANGER.
' Application filed December 11, 1922. Serial No. 606,081.
I1 '0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HENRY J. vm rnn, a citizen of the United States,.residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book Hangers, of which the following is a specification, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in book hangers and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and 'improved device of this general character which may be effectively engaged with a book or the like to permit the book to be conveniently supported as desired.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character embodying a pair of opposed penetrating members, said members being adapted to be forced within the book or the like in order to effect'the requisite engagement of the hanger with the book. o
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several, parts of my im-,
proved book hangerwhereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter morefully set forth. v
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in perspective illustrating a book hanger constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; and v Figure 2 is a view in perspective illustrating a book hanger constructed in accordance with a further embodiment of my invention.
In the form of invention illustrated in Figure 1, my improved hanger is formed of a single strand of wire of requisite gauge and comprises the side member or bar 1 having its central portion coiled as at 2 whereby the opposite end ortions of the bar 1 may he conveniently flexed yet at the same time urged in one direct-ion upon the coils 2 being placed under tension.
' suita y Positioned Support- ()ne extremity of the member or bar l-is extended laterally to form an eye member 3 or other suitable support whereby my improved hanger can be employed with convenience and facility in suspending or hanging-abook or the like with which the device is employed. 7 I i The eye member 3 is formed by loopinga portion of the strand and then twisting the same as at 4, said strand being then continued in a direction opposed-to the eye member 3 to provide a side bar "5. [The bar 5 terminates in an inwardly directed penetrating pin or member 6, said bar 5 intermediate its ends and at substantially its central portion is inwardly offset as at 7 ,and pivotally vor hingedly connected with said offset portion 7 is a tie or holding bar 8.
The extremity of the bar 1 remote from the eye member 3 is provided with a short arm 9 preferably formed by pinching the strand into substantially an eye member, the strand is continued from the arm 9 by the second side arm 10 normally substantially in parallelism with the arm 5, said'arm 10 also'terminating in an inwardly directed penetrating pin or member 11. The arm 10 separating movement is facilitated by the coils 2. The extent of separat-ionis suiiicient to permit the application of a book and particularly the corner portion of a book between the penetrating pins or members 6 and 11 whereupon said penetrating members or pins 6 and 11 are caused to impinge the book and which can be readily effected by.
which is adapted to be engaged with a hook imposing relatively select pressure upon said I members or pins 6 and 11. 'lVith my improved hanger thus engaged with a book, the book may be readily suspended as desired by engaging the eye member 3 with a After the pins or members 6 and 11 have been properly forced within the book or the like the tie or holding bar 8 or particularly the hook 14 carried thereby is engaged with the inwardly offset portion 12 of the side bar 10 and whereby the arms and are effectively held against outward or separating movement and maintained in effective engagement with the book.
In the embodiment of my invention as illustrated in Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings, my improved hanger is constructed from a single sheet of materialv and comprises a substantially rectangular plate 15 provided at one end with a laterally and outwardly directed eye member 16 adapted to be engaged with a suitable support, said plate 15 at the same end is provided with an oppositely directed arm 17 with which is pivotally engaged as at 18 an extremity of a second arm 19, said arm 19 terminating in an inwardly directed penetrating pin or member 20.
The marginal portion of the plate 15 provided with the eye member 16 and at the opposite end of said plate is provided with an outstanding arm 21. The same end of the plate is provided with the oppositely directed elongated arm 22 extending in the same general direction as the arm 19 and also terminating in an inwardly directed penetrating pin or member 23. The swinging arm 19 readily permits the penetrating members and 23 to be oppositely engaged with a book or the like and in order to maintain said pins in applied position I hingedly or pivotally connect as at 24 with the arm 19 a lock or tie bar 25, said bar 25 being provided with a hook member 26 adapted to engage the arm 22 and particularly a notch or recess 27 produced in the outer longitudinal marginal portion of said arm 22.
The arm 9 or the arm 21 is adapted to have engaged therewith an eye member 3 or 16 of a second hanger or the like so that said second hanger together with an asconstructed in accordance with my invention is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I clai1n: V
A hanger for books comprising a body member provided with two relatively movable bars, said bars being provided with inwardly directed and opposed penetrating members. a the first named bars and provided with a hook member engageable with the second holding bar carried by one of of the first named bars for holding the I first named bars against separating movement, an eye member carried by one end portion of the body member to provide a supporting means, the opposite end portion of the body member being provided with an outstanding arm.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
HENRY J. VETTER.
