To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, HnmiAN H. S'rmn'r- MANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Tar and Asphalt Heaters for Road Maintenance, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to the axle construction for portable tar and asphalt heaters, whereby springs may be interposed between the axle and the frame to provide a construction better adapted for rapid movement from place to place when trailed behind rapidly moving motor vehicles, than the constructions now in use, and it consists of that simple construction and method of assembly to be hereinafter particularly pointed out and claimed, whereby the desired springs may be applied. 7 V
Of course, springs of very many different constructions interposed between thecarry- 'ing axle and frame of all sorts of vehicles, are exceedingly old and my invention is particularly directed to a construction that can be most readily and easily applied in the simplest and most effective manner at very small expense.

A portion of the side of the heater is shown at 1', upon which are riveted or otherwise secured, angle bars 2, 2, for mounting the heater on the carrying axle 3.

The compression given the spring is about a fourth ofthe compression to which the Spring will be subjected under the full load of the heater. 7
In order to hold the coiled spring in place, a flanged plate 18 is first riveted to the under surface of the plate 16. r
The construction is now in condition for securing it to the heater. The angle bar is punched with holes to receive the nuts 19, so that the plate 16 can. be brought into contact with the angle bar and nuts 20 are employed to secure the parts rigidly in place. This brings the holes previously: drilled in the straps and angle bar into alignment and rivets 21 are preferably employed to secure the ends of the straps.
In this way a very effective spring construction for the carrying axle can be readily and easily applied with Very little labor and expense. I
Having thusdescribed my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a device of the character specified, the combination with the heater body and carrying axle with axle block, of an outside and inside strap engaging under said block, the inside strap having vertical portions to guide said block,a plate enclosing the inside strap, with a spring interposed between said axle block and said plate and said straps secured together andto the heater of an ol tside and inside strep engaging under said block/the inside strep having vertical portions to guide said blbck, 51 plate enclosing the inside strap, with a spring interposed b teeneid. a le l sh wt aid: plate and said straps secured together and to the angle bars of the heater:
