Be it known that I, JQHN PEYER, a citi; zen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Block lyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in a Tool Handle, of which the following is a s ecitication.
Among the principal ob ects which the present invention has in view are: To quickly and readily alter the operation of the tool as a ratchet tool operati successively clockwise and contrawise, am a direct operating tooloperating as controlled. by the operator; to sim iii the shifting mechw nism by which 1;- e change in the operation of the tool is effected; and to simplify and cheapen the operation and construction of the handle.

Deacript'ian. As seen in the drawings the body 11 of the handle is preferably constructed {of metal having a socket to receive the reduced end 12 of the wooden handle 13. The body 11 is elevated at one side to provide a mount 14 in which the latch 15 is reciproeatively mounted, a bore being driven lengthwise through the mount 14. to accommodate the said latch and the spring 16 thereof. forward end of the latch engages in service a mutilated wheel 17.

It will be understood that the Wheel 17 is shifted lengthwise of the shaft 18 by hand. he chuck head 21 is held in service relation to the body 11 by the ferrule 23. The chuck has an extension 28 in which a cylindrical socket 29 is bored. A pin 30 is driven through the extension 28 and through the socket 29. Claims.
1. A tool handle comprising a grip portion, a chuck head rotatively connected thereto, a member pivotally and eccentrical- 1y mounted on said grip portion to engage said chuck head for ratchet action with the grip portion, and slidably mounted on said grip portion to engage said chuck head for positive direct action with said grip portion.
2. A tool handle comprising a grip portion,
a chuck head rotatively connected thereto,
a lateral extension on said gri portion, a member slidably disposed in said extension and adapted to engage said chuck head for positive actuation of said chuck head with said grip portion, said member being eccentrically and pivotally mounted in said extension for ratchet action with said chuck head on proper positioning of the member.
3. A tool handle having an operating handle, and a chuck head rotatively connected thereto, said chuck head having a c lindrical roughened engaging portion an a flattened portion; a mutilated rocking member having a flattened portion and an engaging periphery corresponding with the surface of the enga ing portion of said chuck head; and means or slidably mounting said member for disposing the same in operative relation to said roughened portion and to the flattened portion of said chuck head.

A tool handle having an operating handle, and a chuck head rotatively connected thereto, said chuck head having a cylindrical roughened engaging portion and a flattened portion; a mutilated rocking member having a flattened portion and an engaging periphery corresponding with the .thereof, respectively,
surface of the engaging portion of said chuck head; andineans for .slidably mounting said member for disposing the same in operative relation to said roughened portion and to the flattened portion of said chuck head, said means embodying a stud bearing slidably supporting said member.
5. A tool handle having a grip portion; a chuck head adapted to receive a working tool, said chuck head having a flattened portion and a cylindrical engaging roughoned portion, said roughened portion and flat portion being adjacently disposed; a mutilated wheel eccentrically and slidably inounted on said grip portion adjacent said flattened and roughened chuck head portion. said wheel having a flattened portion and roughened periphery corresponding with the flattened portion of said chuck head and with the roughened cylindrical portion said wheel having a pivotal pawl action on its eccentric pivot when said roughened portions engage, and a fixed non-rotative position when the flattened portions engage; and means for hold ing said wheel in service relation to said flattened and roughened portions when so disposed.
6. A tool handle having a grip portion; a chuck head adapted to receive a working tool, said chuck head having a flattened portion and a cylindrical engaging roughened portion, said roughened portion and flat portion being adjacently disposed; a mutilated wheel eooentrically and slidably mounted on said rip port-ion adjacent said flattened and roug ened chuck head portion, said wheel having a flattened portion and a roughened periphery corresponding with and adapted to engage the flattened portion of said chuck head and the roughened cylindrical portion thereof respectively, said wheel having a pivotal pawl action on its eccentric pivot when said roughened portions engage, and a fixed non-rotative position when the flattened portions engage; and means for holding said wheel in service relation to said flattened and roughened portions when so disposed, said means embodying a spring-seated plunger yieldingly mounted on said handle grip, and a plurality of finder sockets disposed on said wheel with reference to the operating positions thereof.
