The invention as illustrated is embodied in a starting switch for squirrel-cage ir- -duction motors. A container 5 with a hinged cover 6 encloses the switch and accessory apparatus, and the cover is a support for the switch. The switch comprises a fixed contactarrying element i' in the form of a slab of insulating material which is carried within the cover between parallel bars 8, 8 which are bolted to the sides of the cover. Having first closed the switch on the starting position, the handle can be thrown back whereby the movable element ot the switch is made to connect between the contacts in the middle row and the contacts in the forward row and establish the full-speed running connections. While the magnet releases on opening the switch9 the inertia ot the armature and latch is sui'iicient to prevent the prong from moving into the path of the roller before the switch can be thrown to the running position. Vhen the switch is thrown to the ruiming position it is latchcd by reason of the roller coming into engage ment with a second prong 3l, as the blocks 17, 17 are then in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The adjustment is such that this prong when the magnet is energized projects only slightly into the path of the roller, suiiiciently to prevent the switch spring from returning the switch to open position, but not suiiiciently to obstruct the manual operation of the switch.
The switch elements are submerged, when the cover is down, in an oil-well 34, which is supported in the container on a shelf 35.
Since the switch and accessory parts, which may need inspection, are located in the cover, they are at a convenient height, readily accessible and in a good light when the cover is liited. The switch parts are in such relation to the oil-well that when withdrawn from the well by the lifting of the cover, any oil which temporarily adheres to these parts will drip back into the well and not reach any other parts of the apparatus.
It is trequently desirable to locate this apparatus against a. wallwhere floor space is to be found which is not needed for other purposes and conductors can be more conveniently led to it, and in such a position the extent to which the cover can be thrown back is limited, but with the switch organized and proportioned as shown and operating as set forth, the oil-well can be sutiiciently large yto permit oit the operation o'i the switch in at-he submerged position, and with the cover raised to the permissible extent there is enough space Ytor the oil-well to be ii'i'ted out to change the oil, so that a drain-cock, with the chance of leakage which it would have, need not be provided.
I claiml. An electric switch comprising a support, a fixed contact carrying element carried by the support, a movable contact-carrying element, and equal parallel links in a triangularly disposed relation for connecting points in fixed triangular relation on the movable contact-carrying element with points in fixed triangular relation on the support, substantially as described.
2. A double throw starting switch for elect-ric motors with a starting and a running position and an intermediate open position, a magnet in a circuit which is closed when the switch is closed, means for preventing throw ot the switch to running position which is withdrawn by the magnet when energized, means for holding the switch in running position which is held in operative position by the energized magnet, and automatic means for returning the switch to its open position.
