exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in brake drums and is particularly applicable to the'type of brake drum used on draw works in connection with the operation of oil well drilling and pumping.
An objectof my invention is to provide a detachable drum band for brake drums which may be easily manufactured and assembled, and which will be so constructed as to allow "for expansion thereof under heat without damage to the same.
Another object is to provide a brake drum of the type described, having particular means for preventing the sliding of the said band relative to the drum.
These and other objects and advantages of my invention will appear more clearly from the more detailed specification which follows.
Referring to the drawing herewith, wherein a preferred embodiment of my invention is disclosed, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a hoisting drum to which my improvement has been applied; certain parts being broken! away for greater clearness;

In'the use of a hoisting drum for drilling operations, it is a common difliculty to have the brakedrum surface heat up excessively in use.
the weight on the cable causes the drum to rotate rapidly and it is necessary to apply the brake band to prevent too rapld dropping of the tools. In a deep well wherein the continuous unreeling of .the cable lasts through an unusually long period, there is danger of the overexpansion of the brake drum and the lining thereof, and it is not uncommon to have the brake drum This occurs principallywhen tools are lowered from thd'surface' of the earthvintq deep wells. In the drawin I have illustrated a brake drum 1 mounts upon a transverse shaft 2 for-rotation with said shaft,the shaft, in operation being mourned in bearings at each end thereof.
The drum comprises a central hollow cylindrical reel 3 having at each end a hub l fitting within the central opening therein. There is on said hub a radial flange or plate 5 forming The reel '3 fits with in an annular slot til in the side of said flange, thus making a close fit therewith. Spaced inwardly from the outer edge 7 oil the flange 5 is a laterally extending drum support 8. The plate 5, as shown particuarly in Fig, 1, is reinforced by strengthening ribs 9 extending like spoltcs of a Wheel from the central hub outwardly to the said drum support. At spaced intervals along the drum support on the inner surface thereof are formed bosses 10 through which transverse openings-ll are ,in position by said bolts 12 previously referred to. y

2. In a hoisting drum, a brake drum, comprising a drum support, a removable drum band made. up of a plurality of sections spaced slightly apart, a lug on each said sections fitting within a groove in the drum supportand lateral retaining flanges, and means to secure said sections on said support.
3. In a hoisting drum, a brake drum, comprising a drum support, a removable drum band made up of a plurality of sections, and inwardly projecting lugs on said sections fitting loosely in grooves in said support whereby said drum band may expand under heat, and lateral flanges on said support to retain said drum band in position. 4. A brake drum comprising a hub. a radial flange thereon, a laterally projecting cylindrical drum support thereon, a removable drum band on said support made up of sections and means to secure said dru-m'banol on said support.
